Alt + right-click -- Stacking -- Always on top

The pager and engage (as module) are't windows, they're desktop modules
and are therefor alyways below.

I run Gentoo Linux on a P4 1.7GHz with 128MB of RAM (my 512 stick just
gave up) and an nVidia GeForce 5700 LE OC. Because I now have only one
fourth of the memory I used to have, KDE 3.4 became rather slow and I
was looking for a new lightweight and fast GUI and Enlightenment had
come to my attention lately so I decided to give that a shot. e16 being
the stable release was emerged first and that ran ok but I didn't like
the UI all that much so I decided to go with the current CVS state of
e17 which has, for the most part, proven quite satisfactory.

Except, it's slower than KDE was! I know this is *alpha* stage software,
but I have read plenty of people's reviews online that said e17 was
fast. I have Thunderbird on Desktop 1,0 and it takes a good minute and a
half to be able to see the entire Thunderbird window when switching
desktops. Opening a new message window to compose this email took almost
 another minute. What gives?

this is weird. what's up? are u running xcompmgr? other processes eating up cpu?
have u checked cpufreq (the cpu freq module) to see if something has downlocked
your cpu? (it wont do anything unless u do it yourself like click on it). are
other processes eating cpu or ram? what is eating all the cpu?

[EMAIL PROTECTED] babbled:

These days, what makes everybody who sees Mac OSX for the first time drop
his jaw is a tool called Expos__. With the stroke of a key, all currently
open windows are scaled down and arranged in a non-overlapping way. This
way, the user gets a perfect overview over all running application and by
clicking on one of these thumbnails all windows are restored as before,
just with clicked-on window on top. This is a pretty eye-candy alternative
to task bars and similar stuff... but wait a minute!
Did I just say eye-candy? Isn't that the magic word that makes everyone
immediately think of our beloved window manager - The Enlightenment?! Yes it
 is...
So here comes my question: although Max OSX' Expos__ also has some other
features - should it not be possible and straight-forward to build a similar
functionality like the one described above into E17 with the many cool,
superfast, highly optimized libraries at hand?
And if so, would such a tool be a welcome feature for E17? (I mean, come on,
Expose even starts with an E already... :-))

read hisam's response. he got it pretty correct. to do this right u will need
xcomposite +xdamage support. that's not happening until e18 due to them being
unstable, buggy and of limited use without xrender being decently accelerated. i
have (mental) plans for doing this in e18, but for e17 its still getting all the
basics done WITHOUT fancy new extensions :)

alt_right click on any app u want to skip - and select skip window list :) for

PS : Sorry for the probable double-posting but i wasn't subscribed to

does it work fine now? it most likely is not an imlib2 problem. edje_cc would
have failed to compile .edj's if imlib2 could load images (thats the only place
its used now - only at compile time of .edj's). it looks like evas coudl not
load images from the edje files. i am guessing evas did not build with eet
support it seems - that's my guess anyway. BUT the icons in the menu indicate
otherwise as the images come from .eap files and those are edje files anyway
with extra metadata. it's almost as if your default.edj theme file has been
truncated so it is missing most or all of the image data. did u run out of disk
space when installing/compiling?

 placed into ~/.e/e/background)

as e doesn't know they exist until u load them - no. e wont go load every module
it sees in every dir - it will load what u tell it to load. by default when it
is installed it loads most of the modules that come with it to help you along
with playing - but if it doesn't come with e it doesn't know about it thus will
never by default load it. :) in the end i woule envisage 3rd party moduels
come with an installer tool of their own a small program maybe with a nice gui
wizard that goes to e and tells it to load the module - adds the module
directory prefix if its not already in the module dir search path etc. i know
this sounds windows like but its would make it MUCH easier for 3rd party
module developers to make something that just builds and seamlessly installs by
running its installer. i guess what it needs is just some examples and everyone
then just copies and repeats.

Thanks! This is really getting me somewhere now.

 2) in half of apps I cannot write non-US chars that I can in gnome or kde,
that isnt big deal, but Id like to switch (US and CZ) keyb layouts. Is that

well e17 will use/inherit your existing locale setup unless you set your own.
then geenrally it will want things like:

de_DE.UTF-8
or
fr_FR.UTF-8
or
zh_CN.UTF-8

etc. apps e runs will inherit e's locale setup. so e is inheriting whatever you
system has atm most likely. the rest will be a system setup issue. as for
keyboard layouts - e doesnt touch that. u can likely change that with xkb
command-line stuff.

 Thanks in advacne,

 Try doing:

 enlightenment_remote --maximize-policy-set SMART

This should make it so that 'maximizing' the windows still wont cover up
your modules. It worked for me.

Awesome: thanks!

does it work fine now?

No I've tried everything and still the same problem but after that I
tried on FreeBSD6 and all goes well on it.

did u run out of disk
space when installing/compiling?

No it's a fresh install with a lot of space something like 7Gb free.

Lately I've found something to test ewl (don't remember the name) and
with that all the output is corrupt.
But I have to retry it to be sure because I tried so many things that
I'm a bit lost.

Best regards,

Alt + right-click -- set stacking -- on top

I am trying to not cover those special windows when a window is
maximized. Acording to a message posted by Kim Woelders on
enlightenment-devel some time ago,

http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=enlightenment-develm=107305772608537w=2

there are four options for the maximize operation: conservative,
available, absolute and xinerama, and the available option do not
cover windows with the dont-cover attribute, like the
gnome-panel.

I have tested it and it does work with gnome-panel. But it does not
work with the iconbox, for instance, even when its stacking is set
to on top as sugested by Shish. In fact it does not wor
irrespective of the stacking setting of the window. What the on
top stacking makes is keep the window on top of other windows,
maybe covering part of other windows, but never being covered.

This makes me believe that the dont-cover attribute is not the
same as the stacking: on top attribute.

Maybe somebody could clarify this topic for us.

You are right, it is a different attribute. In e16 this window
attribute can be set using eesh, e.g.:
$ eesh wop Iconbox never_use_area on

Unfortunately, this setting is not remembered atm.

This happens to be almost the exact problem I joined the mailing list to
ask about, but somehow (maybe inertia) never got around to actually
posting; there is, however one difference.

I'm using e16 under Debian sid, and from the first time I did so,
certain windows - gkrellm and the pager - exhibited this never_use_area
behaviour; then (about three months ago) I ran apt-get upgrade and
suddenly the behaviour was no longer present. Does anyone have any idea
as to either why the behaviour seemed to be automatic before, or what
changed to cause it to cease? I can work around the problem now, by
giving the above command for each desired window in my .xsession file,
but I'd still rather know what happened.

While I'm here: a couple of other desirable behaviours changed at the
same time - notably the fact that the Switch to desktop where dialog
appears setting under Pager Settings now appears to be applied to
*every* window, despite the fact that that toggle is set to off. It's
somewhat less aggravating than the other issue, but I'd still rather
avoid it; any ideas what changed, as above, and/or how to fix it?.

 Best regards,

well i'm not sure then. i don't have much to go on. it's not wanting to load the
default theme images - this is odd as they should load - i've tested this
personally on 2 architectures, and the code is written to be arch independent.
without more debugging (like hunting down the lowest level image loading
routines and digging down bit by bit) i can't say - all i can imagine is that
somehow the .edj file is corrupt... ?
