2014-08-03 Thread Massimo Maiurana
Just checked, connman.net is up and reachable, at least on https.

There is only one difference in connmanctl properties with green and
orange dot:
green = State = online
orange = State = ready
Which is odd, as I'm actually online in both cases. Anyway it is
definitely a connman issue, the gadget just reflects what connman says.

But in my case internet does work even when I see the orange dot,
because routes are correctly configurated, dns ip's are available, all
that should be configured via dhcp is indeed configured. That's why I
wonder what it's missing, because apparently it's all there.

Just coz DHCP worked, doesn't mean the rest of the Internet works.
Maybe the DHCP supplied configuration is wrong? Maybe there's a
firewall in the way of those checks? Or maybe it's just that these
checks of connman.net are failing due to some other external issue?

What could be at the same time wrong and allowing me to surf the
internet in every way? That's my own router I connect to, and it gives
 to my wlan0:
 - an ip address, and of course a netmask
 - a default route
 - one dns address (its own)
Looks like it's all that is needed to connect to the whole world. I'll
compare the output from connmanctl when the dot is green and when it's
orange, just to see if there are differences.

Raspberry is also my final goal!
Xbmc has been optimized to use all the hw of the pi, it do opengl and also
use hardware video decoding... not really easy to beat.

Evas with Opengl ES on the rpi should be doable, just some mess with their
driver, but should be compatible. Last time I tried I got blocked on trying
to let evas compile with gl/es enabled

For hw decoding I read that gstreamer1.0 has a rpi backend, so probably is
possible to use. Atm rasbian comes with gstreamer0.10, so we should build
it from sources.

Let me know if you make some work/progress on this

correct. and as i understand it connman figures this out when it dhcp's - if at
that time it doesn't work for whatever reason - you get orange. if it works, you
get green. remember his is AT the time dhcp comes up - there may be a race
condition where things don't route for the first few milliseconds or something -

hey what a great work here !

some thoughts/ideas

Is the webserver wire compliant with xbmc ? so you could benefits from
all xbmc apps (like yatse) to remote control it from your coutch.

One of the common issue with all mediaserver softwares it that there
are no backend/frontend separation. But the backend is basically the
same problem for everyone, the frontend differs in its implementation
(EFL/xbmc/...). This could merge efforts on the backend side with all
networking/sharing/stuff and each project implements its frontend.

The success for a project like this is to be embedded in a distro
(like openelec for xbmc). Being wire compatible, you could be an
alternative integrated into openelec.

Keep the good work :)

no, it is not compatible, for the moment it just serve a (skinnable) html

I dont know how the xbmc one work, if the protocol is simple then it can be

speaking about the e gadget... always confusing that separation.

btw, I think your error is caused by python-efl not being in sync with efl,
please
try to update both and see if the error persist.

Re: [e-users] How to make enlightenment more battery friendly?

2014-08-03 Thread The Rasterman

ok some numbers - this is intel driver, gl, with partial rendering enabled and
1 window with a spinny busy animation:

  http://www.enlightenment.org/ss/e-53d89ef1d9efe3.65777916.png

5% cpu with 1 window having a busy spinner. gl engine for compositor. perf says
this is how cpu usage is distributed within the enlightenment process:

  http://www.enlightenment.org/ss/e-53d89f67eb5bb6.40053571.png

now if we turn partial update off (i forced it on above, as opposed to default
auto which detects buffer age extension automatically and uses the correct info
from gl).

  http://www.enlightenment.org/ss/e-53d8a020545aa4.08083375.png

19% cpu now. 4x as much. with profile of:

  http://www.enlightenment.org/ss/e-53d8a07f6fc960.37155853.png

note these numbers are about 15-20% higher (17 vs 20% cpu) because i'm runing a
perf top at 5 hz - this seems to raise cpu usage by about 15-20% for
processes. so drop back down by that for normal situations.

either way - as you can see. partial rendering uses 1/4 or so the cpu of
re-rendering everything. the optimization is already there and done - if the
driver supports it, it's automatically used without further ado. if not - you
get full redraws every frame. this means evas walks a lot more canvas content,
generates a lot more geometry etc. etc.

we already have the optimizations there, but the extension support is not. even
the people behind the extension we use don't implement it. their major gpu
competitor does though. on glx anyway. you can try egl+gles and see if it's
there. i'm not sure. but that will drop your cpu usage a lot. i am actually
ASSUMING and expecting this will happen - or eventually will. you're getting a
slow path atm due to drivers.

the cpu use in canvas walking as before (the top 1 items) is a matter of a
canvas render rewrite of 10 year old code. i have started with some skeleton
code but getting time to do it is tough. a simpler theme will help little
(especially with gl). if i get some time, i'll try find a way to add some
numbers or debug to track # of triangles per frame and put an older e17
install in to collect them - better yet even to draw outlines of the triangles
too and get a screenshot so you can see how we drive geometry differently.

Since I upgraded to the newer e18, Multi doesn't work anywhere except in efl

I kind of did, but it never hurts to check :)

This is what my right alt gives with xev

XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

This is very spooky, I get Mode_switch on press and Meta_R on release.
Whoa, how does that make sense?

Just curious, do you get this when you launch terminology?
ERR24256:ecore_x lib/ecore_x/xlib/ecore_x.c:301 _ecore_x_modifiers_get()
ALTGR conflicts with other modifiers. IGNORE ALTGR

I see this even when when I have 108 set to ALT_R and not Multi.
Raster, is that normal?
John, do you see this too?

More annoyingly, I also noticed that with 108 = Mode_switch, I can type
é in a terminat, chrome, firefox, just not terminology.

But it gets more weird. Right Ctrl (code 105) is set to multi:
KeyRelease event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x741,
root 0xb2, subw 0x0, time 358486116, (121,75), root:(810,1512),
state 0x4, keycode 105 (keysym 0xff20, Multi_key), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

I have
keycode 26 = e E eacute egrave ecircumflex ediaeresis ecircumflex ediaeresis

And ctrl+ + e does not give ë anymore, except in terminology and inside e18

What is going on?

Just curious, how do you turn on partial rendering?

comp settings - in advanced under rendering - that's turning it on manually
ignoring what the driver actualy does. - you may end up with flickering and
bugs as the driver sometimes re-orders buffer and evas then has no idea. it's
automatic by default in evas if you have the right extensions. as i also
mentioned egl/gles may support it where glx does not on intel - so go rebuild
evas for gles and see. (mesa offers glx and egl/gles).

 Is that in composite/rendering?

Is the webserver wire compliant with xbmc ? so you could benefits from
all xbmc apps (like yatse) to remote control it from your coutch.

no, it is not compatible, for the moment it just serve a (skinnable) html
 page
that simulate a remote (play, pause, etc). So it is usable by any device
 with a webrowser.

I dont know how the xbmc one work, if the protocol is simple then it can be
 easily implemented in epymc.

One of the common issue with all mediaserver softwares it that there
are no backend/frontend separation. But the backend is basically the
same problem for everyone, the frontend differs in its implementation
(EFL/xbmc/...). This could merge efforts on the backend side with all
networking/sharing/stuff and each project implements its frontend.

epymc is not in any way a mediaserver, is more a mediaclient :)

The success for a project like this is to be embedded in a distro
(like openelec for xbmc). Being wire compatible, you could be an
  alternative integrated into openelec.

Indeed, I was looking for an integration in openelec, but its a quite big
task, someone else should do this

  Keep the good work :)

Hi, great job!
I had svn version of epymc but I can't even remember how it was because
there were a lot of enhancements.
Thanks to you.

By the way, I have a couple of comments.
1. The icon and text sizes are too big compared with the default elementary
theme with the default scalability. I had to manually scale it down to 0.5
to match it with default elementary theme from the general configuration
panel. Is there a reason behind this?
2. Unfocused buttons look like disabled as its in a grey color. It will be
great if you can adjust the colors.
3. Does it work with Joystick well? Then Cinoo needs to check this.

Thanks.

mod4Super_L (0x85), Super_R (0x86), Super_L (0xce), Hyper_L (0xcf)
mod5ISO_Level3_Shift (0x5c), BadKey (0xcb)

Actually I'll attach my xmodmap dump so that you can tell me if I have
something set wrong or if there is something wrong with my x server.
More simply, if you can tell me what I should do to assign modeswitch to
and multi to right alt and ctrl, I'll be happy to oblige :)

I see this even when when I have 108 set to ALT_R and not Multi.

err what do you mean by multi? there is an actual multi key. this is how you
 do compose sequences. ie:

 multi, e, ` == è
 multi, e, ' == é

I have multi bound to right ctrl, it's worked like this for about 20
years. It still works with terminology and e, but nothing else now.

I don't need multi for é since I can use mode_switch to hit right alt
and e, but for ë I do use
right ctrl

e

It still works in terminology, but nowhere else now.
OMG, I ran a new xfce4-terminal, and now mode_switch and multi work in
it, as well as all my existing xfce4-terminal windows. WTH?
As the same time, mode_switch now broke in terminology, but multi still
works in it.

you get the above as per all my comments in the phab bug. i am repeating
 myself
now endlessly. go read it. i explained it in detail. they way you have your
keyboard working alt and altgr as modifiers conflict. they produce the SAME
modifier mask. exactly the same. modifier state is a bitmask - with a bit on
for the modifier. e dumps altgr if it conflicts with alt as it is not a
separate modifier at all then, and that is what causes the problem with
bindings as e can now not tell if its alt or altgr pressed, so it assumes both
as they both match - otherwise it has to randomly guess which and that's
 worse.

I understand that part, but I think I misunderstood you on where the bug
is. I thought you meant the bug was in X, but now I think you're saying
I have my modifiers set wrong in xmodmap, and that I can change of
course.
Note that I don't knowingly change my modifiers (xmodmap -pm that is, I
did change the key mappings, aka xmodmap -pke) with xmodmap, I think
that's what I get from X, but I'm happy to adjust them.

 xmodmap -e keycode 108 = Mode_switch Alt_R Meta_R Alt_R Meta_R

I now simply have
keycode 105 = Multi_key
keycode 108 = Mode_switch
Is that broken?

doesn't even do anything for me in 2 apps as non-efl toolkit apps. so i don't
even know what it's meant to do/make work... but it does nothing for other
toolkits, and nothing for terminology or efl too. all it results in is a
 broken
modifier mask mappping that i know have added code to work around.

There is clearly something subtle going on since it's worked for me for
years with everything all the way back to Xfree286, but I'm not attached
to keeping in that way, I'm happy to change.
Is it broken to assing Multi to 105 and Mode_switch to 108?

Both of these methods are working for me in terminology and claws mail.

The modmap things I found online seem to show that having more than 4
values for a key is not well supported, but your (Marc's) message had
that tantalizing set of eight values for the e key. I don't see how to

I don't set 8 values, but xmodmap -pke returns 8 values.

this is what I get when I start terminology (my computers are sometimes
 named after jazz musicians)

 jholland@herbie:~$ terminology

Ok, so you're also getting this conflict without my Xmodmap, but at
least things seem to be working for you. Thanks for sharing.

Yes. It now works only in E and terminology for me.

it's directly supported in efl core - i believe for gtk, etc. you need input
methods for this (scim/ibus/iimf etc.). i use those too, so it works there for
me. in efl there is in fact a compiled-in table of all of the compose sequences
for multi key. terminology uses that api to figure out your compose seq, and
edje entries (which elm entry uses) do too. thus it worksin efl.

of time looking at this. the modifier masks for alt and altgr clash. they
are indistinguishable from a client point of view. it's a misconfiguration
  of the modifier masks.

So wait, did you say earlier the problem was with the X server (code?)
 or my configuration of xmodmap?

xmodmap creates a conflict of modifier maps with your setup. phab ticket has an
explanation - as does the git commit log.

I have this (default from xorg), should I change it?
 legolas:~$ xmodmap -pm

as above. i don't know how to fix your modifier map other than somehow
assigning mode_switch to something other than mod1 - maybe mod3. how is a
matter of tinkering.

you have altgr create a modifer mask of 0x8 (bit # 4 set). alt ALSO produces
this bitmask as well. (i don't remember the exact bit bit they both had the
SAME mask). since we detect modifiers by the bitmask - it's now ambiguous.

try it. hit alt+x then altgr+x - in xev. look at state value. that is the
modifier/lock states. notice it has the same value with either key. note that
with bindings you dont see the modifier key press. you only see the x or f1
or whatever along with the current state, so we can't go tracking the modifier
keys themselves.

Note that I don't knowingly change my modifiers (xmodmap -pm that is, I
