by the way, is it possible to have an iconbar in the botton of the
screen? I tried to use iconbar_bottom.bits.db but no luck.

I think that .bits file is broken (or incompatible with something).

I thought so too, especially when I noticed that iconbar_bottom and
iconbar_left have different sizes in megs.

If you go to the Cuddletech site and download his iconarm bits file,
you can have a nice iconbar along the bottom-right of your desktop.

I haven't tried hacking any myself yet, but it can't be that hard...

thanks, I will take a look at ben's site :)

ok, I downloaded the iconarm bits from cuddletech and, since I saw that
there was also an etcher tutorial, I downloaded it too.

I suggest to read this tutorial to everyone who wants to understand how
e17 bits works and how to make their own bits.
I edited the iconarm bit as I wanted it, and I also understood that for
a desktop item to work properly you need to have the right layout.db,
because is layout.db that tells e where to put items.
and this is the reason why iconbar_bottom.db doesn't works for me;
because the layout.db copied from desktop.bits.db has the iconbar
position exactly where it has to be using iconbar_left.db.
also, iconbar_left and iconbar_bottom has different sizes just because
their layout is different; iconbar_bottom doesn't have the same images
that iconbar_left has, its look is very different.
just open these db files with etcher and you will understand more,
and edit them as you want, and also remember to read ben's tutorial
(thanks to ben rockwood ;)

hope this can help e17's users :)

Re: [e-users] FAQ about e17

2003-02-12 Thread Christian Hansen
Hi All

thanks for your answers so far.

Unfortunatly my iconbar is not working yet. I don't know what is wrong.
Everything compilet just fine. It is as if the e17 doesn't read the
folder $HOME/.e/desktop/0/.e_layout/ that I've created. The folder
contains four files:

desktop.bits.db iconbar.bits.db iconbar.db tidepools.bg.db

I also tried to change the background image with no luck. Is it the
wrong folder i'm using?

Greetings Christian

Hi It would be nice whit a faq about e17. I just compiled it and I like
what I see. Today I've been using E for almost 3 years and it is still
my absolute favorite wm. No other wm has the flexability that E provides.

( The linux desktop is very much alive with E :-)

I agree; I've been hooked on Linux and E ever since I tried them...

Questions.

How do I shuffle between the different desktops in e17?

Alt-F1, Alt-F2, etc. The menu options for desktop switching won't work,
since it was apparently a ferrite wrapper (and ferrite scripting was
removed a while back). I'm not sure if there's a replacement
functionality.

How do I
configure e17? basics. How do I create the iconbar?

The iconbar is created by a script in a dir like the following:

/path/to/e/share/enlightenment/data/scripts.

as well as the left-click root menu. Edit to your liking. Then run the
script and point the output to your ~/.e/desktop/... The details are on
the sites below.

There's config help on these tasks, including extra backgrounds and
theme parts, in a number of places. However, e17 is still alpha (ie,
not officially released) so there is no support other than this list,
and several sites:

Andy's e site, with e17 forum:

http://e1x.codewordt.co.uk/

The Cuddletech site e17 page:

http://www.cuddletech.com/e17/index.html

Ralph's e17 page:

http://www.informatik.uni-oldenburg.de/~nofx/linux/enlightenment.html

and probably a few more. There's even a few e17 threads in the main
Gentoo forum (I'm running a couple different versions of e17 on Gentoo
now).

You pretty much have to assimilate the above config stuff, some of which
has been altered by changes in the code, and experiment yourself. Just
back up your default config stuff first, and then hack away...
