[e-users] hang-ups

2003-12-27 Thread Marcelo Coelho
Hi

I'm having some problems when i'm using xfree 4.3 and enlightenment.
Sometimes the system hangs and there's nothing to do except pressing the
reset button. Not even the ctrl-alt-fx keys work. All i see is the
desktop with some erratic pixels (all lined up). What can i do to know
if the problem is reallys enlightenment or something else? I've checked
some logs but nothing.
Thanks, in advance

Are you using an nvidia card with nvidia's binary drivers?

I had this same sort of problem for a long time because it turned out
that the nvidia card was sharing an IRQ with my sound card.
Unfortunately the only way I was able to change this was by moving the
cards around in the pci slots (cause obviously I couldn't move the
nvidia card) until the nvidia card had an IRQ all by itself. Ever since
I haven't had any problems at all.

Of course there have been a couple revisions of nvida's drivers in that
time too, so it may not be as big of an issue anymore. Also, I'm on a
dual athlon system, and while I was trying to googleinate this problem,
I found lots of anecdotal evidence that the dual athlon boards are prone
to issues stemming from irq sharing.

If none of this matches your situation, you might want to look at things
like heat, and run a memory check on your RAM. Flaky ram can cause all
kinds of strangeness.

Hope this helps, and good luck.

Sean

Yes I do! What was the version of the driver of your nvidia card? Mine
is 4496, i believe that it is the last one.

like heat, and run a memory check on your RAM

How can i get the heat info from the nvidia card?

In the meantime, this is what i've got:

kernel 2.6.0-test9 (using framebuffer, at 1024x768)
enlightenment 0.16.6
xfree 4.3.99.15 (i was capable of finding a suitable frequency sync
for my samtron 76 E monitor with 4.3.0)
oem geforce 2 mx 400 64 mb ram with TV-out (not being used)
live 5.1 (using alsa)

(and i believe that is enough...)

It was a release or two behind the 4496 release ... I'm using the 5328
release currently.

You should look at cat /proc/interrupts really.

I would also recommend moving to the released 2.6.0 kernel. Lots of
bugfixes inbetween test9 and the current release. I have also read of
troubles using framebuffer with nvidia cards, so you might want to
consider turning off framebuffer. It probably doesn't help that you're
also using a development version of X.

Heh, my way of getting heat info is to slide off the side of the case
and touch the heatsinks. If it feels scorching hot, I know I have a heat
problem.

Also, since this really doesn't have anything to do with enlightenment,
you should probably take this off list. If you want to email me
directly, that's okay, but I'm not sure how much more advice I can give
you.

Good luck!

Cheers,

Sean

E itself can't lock your machine, as it is a usermode application,
without any direct interaction to the hardware :)

Oh! you got a *BETA* kernel and some hacked patches from minion.de for
the nvidia drivers then ... :)
well, dont expect reliability from nvidia drivers on development
kernels, since they were made for the older structure...
lockups happen sometimes :)
memtest86.com got a memory testing suite... try that out

I didnt quite get the right meaning of that comment :/

| oem geforce 2 mx 400 64 mb ram with TV-out (not being used)

geforce2 mx400? hmmm, does it have a fan? is it working properly?
you can try that 'nvtune' to lower the clock speed and see if it locks
up...

| (and i believe that is enough...)
I'd hope so :)
