[eug-lug]winxp lappy woes...

2003-12-21 Thread Linux Rocks !
So... I havnt had a lot of time to mess with this lappy yet, but these are the
things Ive tried:
original drivers for the smc 8020 pcmcia network card. no luck...
different drivers (8022) no luck.
Booting knoppix (boots, runs great, detects/loads my network). sadly it wont
let me write to the ntfs (winxp) partition!

I think Im going to have to resort to floppy disks and juno free internet to
get the network (if winxp even supports this device at all!).

Or
setup my wireless net (I did get a chance to compile the wireless driver, but
havnt set up the network or anything yet... or setup the wireless on the
lappy...

sadly, the lappy came with XP (but has a sticker for win2k) I guess the guy
that sold it setup his winxp (and a bunch of other stuff, taking up 4G of
12G). I shold see if I can get the original cd that comes with this laptop,
but untill then, I have to deal with XP (which so far is very unimpressive to
me) Sadly, I still need both windows and linux to do eveyrthing I need right
now...

[eug-lug] Thanks for SB card help everyone (and a new little annoyance)

2003-12-21 Thread nyal
What can I say but THANKS! Everyone had great ideas/suggestions for
me to
get the sound up and running. For the time being I've pulled the SB Live
card out and got my AC '97 sound working.I'm planning on diving into
the
SoundBlaster card but probably after the holidays.

I've got another little annoyance going on now that I could use some help
with.
I've got a constant hi/lo tone coming from my speakers once Mandrake starts
up. Sounds like a European Police Horn. I think it's got something to do
with the chassis intrusion alarm that's built into this ASUS K7M Slot A
Motherboard but I don't know for sure. I've disabled the intrusion
alarm in
the CMOS and there's no cable connected to the pins on the board. Does
this
sound familiar to anyone?

Again, thanks for all the ideas/suggestions..you've got me pointed
in the
right direction, now I just need to dive in!

Sincerely,

Nyal R. Cammack

Are you in a car? Check in your rear view mirror for a vehicle with
flashing red or blue lights following you. That could be the source
of the noise. The best way to make it go away is accelerate and
outrun the vehicle.

Bob, I had no idea you knew my uncle, but apparently, he taught you how to
drive!

[eug-lug]Adding/Detecting USB Devices with RH *+

2003-12-21 Thread Jim Darrough

Dear Linux Gurus:

I have RH 8.0 running (probably will upgrade to 9.x soon) and
don't understand how to make the system recognize USB devices. I want to
use a USB Hard Drive and a USB CD/RW drive. Can someone point me in the
right direction?

Regards, Jim Darrough

What happens when you hotplug and check 'dmesg'?

I sure hope those are USB 2 devices...

Both should be part of the usb-storage driver once you have the
appropriate chipset driver for your USB controller (EHCI for USB 2, UHCI
most likely, or possibly OHCI, for USB 1.1. You have two options for a
UHCI driver usb-uhci and uhci (the JE driver). I can't recommend one over
the other, but I suspect most likely a canned kernel in RH uses one or the
other. I do not know if 8.0 even supports EHCI.

[eug-lug]PDA's

2003-12-21 Thread Dirk Ouellette
My wife wants to get me a pda for christmas, but she wants me to choose
as I use Linux. Looking at
http://www.linuxdevices.com/articles/AT8728350077.html
there are many coming out soon but not for xmas. What works well now and
is less than $150.

Palm compatible PDAs work well with Linux. I use jpilot to sync,
though there's also a KDE pilot module and probably others. Those
that use Windows CE are less Linux friendly.

I don't think Linux on PDAs is really mainstream yet -- unless your
wife is a Linux zealot, she'll probably be happier with a Palm.

Palm compatibles are made by Palm, Handspring, Sony, and others. I
can't give advice on current models -- my Handspring Visor Edge has
been out of production for a year and a half now.

My opinion. Worth what you paid for it. (-:

Re: [eug-lug]PDA's

2003-12-21 Thread Mr O
The few PDA's the run linux are a little harder to find. If you
want to be supergeek you run linux on your PDA. If you just want
it for some sort of productivity like phone numbers, schedules,
etc.. then go for a Palm. I like using my Zaurus for taking
notes and playing games in color. I find it's great for travel,
just never leave home without the charger.

That's one of the nice things about my 1.5 year old Visor Edge. Its
battery lasts at least a month (longer if I don't use it much). That
makes it almost as good as a paper notepad. (-:

Newer models with color screens, cameras, WiFi interfaces, etc. will
have much shorter battery life.
