Running Linux w/ > xine/mplayer and MythTV/Freevo, of course. I'd hold out for 2160 horizontal resolution since the scaling is perfect 2:1 for 1080i HDTV if you're looking at the 24" display as a TV. Lower resolutions are reasonably nicely interpolated if there any attempt to do so correctly simply because anything over 2:1 can be made to work without getting too blurry. Brightness may be a factor, but I expect that a 24" display is going to be backlit similar to Apple's 20 and 23" models--much brighter than any laptop you've ever seen. Ever. A factor for me is that the gamma ramp is different than it should be (TVs tend to be brighter and have color temperatures which approach blue.) Another is that interpolation tends to cause some things to be darker because they are small and lose some of their sharp edges if the interpolation isn't done right (it's not in this instance..) Getting it right is doable if they hardware knows how, but I'm using software which makes some assumptions. It's not been enough of a problem to warrant special efforts to correct--I just raise the brightness to full when watching TV. ___ EuG-LUG mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mailman.efn.org/cgi-bin/listinfo/eug-lug

Re: [eug-lug]New year's resolution...
My primary concerns... Brightness, sharpness, size, PC compatibility. Dell's new 20" LCD is a serious upgrade over their old one. Thus the supposed price increase. The new panel they are using is a 16 or 25ms panel which is fast for something of that size. Lots of updates that make that a very worthwhile panel from the review I've read on it. But.. 20" is not big enough for more than one person to watch movies on AND it's not a 16:9 screen. Television is my last concern. I've been hunting for the right plasma without a tuner of any sort. Newer plasma technologies produce sharper pictures with truer colors and less 'pixeled' edges. Hitachi and Pioneer seem to have the most of what I want in a screen. But the models I want are considered "industrial use" and aren't available locally. The better plasmas also take a UXGA signal ((1600x1200) compressed into a 1024x1024 box) and various others such as WXGA (1280x768) producing a near perfect picture on a widescreen monitor. Alas, if you look at the price of a high end 24" LCD it is at least half the price of a good 42" plasma. Lastly, I already have the high performance PC part of the picture ;-) Mr O. --- Bob Miller <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > In November, Dell was selling their 20" 1600x1200 LCD panels > for $750. > They're back up to $1000 now. > > OTOH, the 1920x1200 24" displays (WUXGA, I think) look awfully > nice. > They're cheaper than a big screen TV, and they have a much > higher > resolution than HDTV. I would disrecommend Amanda. I set it up for our home network about three years ago. At that time, it had these problems: assumed tape as backup medium. assumed several disk partitions fit on one tape. was poorly maintained. That was three years ago, and I'd love to hear that it's much better now. In the meantime, I'd suggest an rsync based backup. Unfortunately, I don't know of any free, packaged solutions for that, just a wealth of info on the 'net for rolling your own. http://www.google.com/search?q=rsync+backup -- Bob Miller K kbobsoft software consulting http://kbobsoft.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ EuG-LUG mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mailman.efn.org/cgi-bin/listinfo/eug-lug

[eug-lug]I'm back!
Sorry I missed yesterday's clinic, but... nOur power went out yesterday morning. It came back about two hours later. Our phones and IDSL line went out. It came back this afternoon. A tree fell across our driveway, blocking us in. We spent several hours hacking on it and clearing it away, and got the driveway open this afternoon. Had to borrow a chainsaw from a neighbor. I got Anne's car (the 4WD Subaru) stuck sideways in the driveway when I tried to turn around and go back to the house after finding the tree across the path. Got it unstuck by mounting another pair of chains on the back wheels (it already had chains on the fronts when it got stuck). Anyway, all systems are operational again.
