[eug-lug]Re: EuG-LUG Digest, Vol 11, Issue 20

2004-02-09 Thread Dirk Ouellette

Also, the Opera browser also has decent 'masquerading' as Larry describes
it. Dirk, it certainly looks like the issue here is with their site, not
your system. And just to clarify, since I've been more involved with large
webapps -- I have to disagree with Larry here. It'd be nice if you could
choose any browser, but of *course* it matters a great deal.
Any sufficiently complex webapp, especially those that make extensive use of
javascript, java applets, and complex page construction techniques, will
show platform- and browser-issues; what's more is that the amount of work
to effectively provide quality assurance (for the site as a product) for
more than one browser is truly awesome. IIRC there's plenty of open source
projects that work best on IE and mozilla-based browsers... it's nice to be
excited about open source and free software, and to proactively push FOSS'
efforts, but garsh if you examine the current state of the web, most folks
are driving their default Model T (er, IE).

 Regards,

   Ben

PS - I agree that any site mentioning Navigator is out of date! In many
cases, modifying your user agent string is sufficient = )

Short answer: no. These messages tell you about your scsi disk.
sr is generally used instead of sd for removable media, although some of
the messages below seem to indicate that /dev/sda might be a removable drive
 on your system (?)...
So if I guess that you have a real scsi bus on your system, am I right?
I suppose it could be a ZIP disk, some of these came with their own scsi
controller (ie, the non-parallel-interfaced ones) which might get mapped to
 sda.
Maybe you could send along the contents of /proc/bus/usb/devices when your
palm is connected; I think this is the same info provided by 'usbview'
although that is a GUI program.

I have the USB HotSync cable with my new Clie PEG-SJ22 pda but after
following the howto @
http://www.linuxlookup.com/html/guides/visor-jpilot.html#2.2
I still can't get the Clie to sync with my Fedora box. The last lines of
my /etc/fstab
look like;

/dev/hda12 swapswapdefaults
0 0
/dev/cdrom1 /mnt/cdrom1 udf,iso9660
noauto,user,kudzu,ro 0 0
/dev/sda1 /mnt/camera auto user,noauto 0 0
/dev/sda1 /mnt/neuros vfat user,sync,noauto 0 0
#/dev/pilot /mnt/CLIE autouser,sync,noauto0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9660
noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0

I commented out the /dev/pilot as I wasn't sure of its correctness. Do I
need the USB cradle as in the above Howto article?

[eug-lug]Re: Grip problems

2004-01-01 Thread Dirk Ouellette
IIRC, ripped files are .wav, then encoded ones are .mp3 (or .ogg, etc)

You can try running grip from the CLI, instead of the GUI, so that you
see
its stdout and stderr on your command line... that might help.

Also make sure grip is running as a user which has permissions to write
where you want (ie, is ~/mp3/ a symlink or owned by another user?).

get a grip ;^))

Thanks Ben I solved the problem by;
I reconfiged my Rip file format to [~/mp3/%A/%d/%n.wav] , my Encode
file format to [~/mp3/%A/%d/%n.mp3] and my Encoder executable to
/usr/bin/bladeenc.

To put multiple photos on a page, determine the pixel dimension's you'll
need to hold what you want on one page. For instance, if you have 4
1200x1600 pix, then make a new canvas (file-new) in the gimp, and
specify 2400x3200. Then you can use cutNpaste to get the bits where you
want them! Sounds like you've made some good progress... congrats, and
continue to be patient with yourself, learning linux *can* be slow
although many things are a snap if you know how to google and use other
 resources like tldp.org

[eug-lug]Gimp printing photos

2003-10-27 Thread Dirk Ouellette
Is there anyone on the list who can help me set up the Gimp to print
photos using Redhat 9 and my hp 5550 printer. So far I have to use a
Windows hdd as I can't figure out how to make Gimp do the job. The
gThumb viewer will do it but I can't configure the right picture sizes
in gThumb. Is there an easier app to do photo printing in linux?
Thanks, Dirk

Dirk, it is considered bad netiquette to cross post (mail two lists at
once). Noone has ever mentioned this too me until now

Why is that? No one has ever mentioned this too me until now.

Thanks John. I put it in ~/.bashrc and found other aliases already
there. It is Redhat 9 BTW. And I understand the bad netiquette now.
Thanks to all.

[eug-lug]xmms mp3 problem

2003-10-17 Thread Dirk Ouellette
Well I used bladeenc to change wav files to mp3, but I inadvertently
used it to mp3 some mp3 files. Now when I use xmms to play them I can
see xmms working with the graph showing a nice audio wave, but I hear
only white noise! What is going on?

2003-10-17 Thread Dirk Ouellette
I see that some these mp3'd songs are still full length and they work
fine, but many are now 15 to 38 seconds long, and those are the non
working tunes.

PHP is a scripting language (similar to perl) most widely used to
create dynamic web pages, not an audio or video format. Perhaps I'm
 misunderstanding the question though.

These were files I downloaded from http://calabashmusic.com/ to use as
mp3 on my Neuros player and they came as .php files. This is the prompt
response I received after contacting Calabash;

The problem is that we protect our MP3s with a PHP script. So you make
a request to file.php?ID=123 and we pull the mp3 which corresponds to id
123 if you are permitted to download it. This gets streamed to the
browser. On all major MAC and PC browsers, (NS, IE, Opera), this works
fine. I'll try to debug your problem on my redhat box, but I need to
know what browser you are using. In the mean time, you should just be
able to rename the files to .mp3 instead of .php and they should play
just fine. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, these browser / OS wars
make us developers toss and turn at night. But we are committed to
making the site accessible to as many people as possible.

I've tried mv with this error message and the --help still confuses me;

 MUSIC]# mv /data2/MUSIC/*.php /data2/MUSIC/SoKalmery*.mp3
mv: when moving multiple files, last argument must be a directory
Try `mv --help' for more information.

Do 'cp *.php *.mp3' first then 'rm *.php'. As long as you
downloaded full blown mp3's you'll be able to hear them then.

Thanks Mr O,
