[EuroPython] Reharsals of first-time speakers

2012-06-25 Thread Giovanni Bajo
Hello,

on Sunday July 1st, 15:00 - 19:00, a few first-time speakers will be given the
chance to rehearse their talk to improve their public speaking skills. We are
looking for a few people that might be interested in attending these
rehearsals, both acting as public and, at the end of each talk, giving
suggestions to the speaker (were the slides clear? was there any
slowness/boring part? etc.).

You basically just need to come to the venue, watch a few talks, and comment on
them to help out first-timers.

if you are interested in helping out, please reply to this mail. We are aiming
at gathering 10-20 people in total.

Thanks!

Does anybody know how fast is the 3G provided by the 20€ local SIM cards that
we've been offered to purchase? And what is the data usage limit on them? In
general, are they an OK substitute for wifi? At least for non-bandwidth
intensive stuff (i.e. no torrent and no Skype video calls).

My exprience last year was that they are fine when you're away from
the conference venue. However at the venue (almost) everyone is on
the same network and the local tower is flooded. I still found it
very useful though.

Hi Erik,

the 3G SIM is nominally UMTS 7.2Mbps. Actual speed is usually around 1 Mbit/s.
It should work OK for mail, mobile web browsing, etc. It feels obviously slow
on a computer. The conference center has thick walls, so within the rooms you
don't always get 3G signal; in that case, your phone will fallback to 2G EDGE
which is obviously much slower.

I live in Italy and use 3G all the times; it's an OK substitute for wifi to me,
eg: I never pay for wifi in hotels when I travel around Italy. Obviously your
mileage may vary.

As I understand, 3G signal is weak in the hotel and the hotel wifi is
overcrowded. Therefore, could we consider setting up one (or more) of our own
3G devices (outside the wall, e.g. on a window) that shares itself over wifi to
the conference guests? Unless of course it's too much fuss, or too expensive,
or both.

Please do not do it.

We are working very hard to provide a top-notch wi-fi experience and the
last thing we need is random radio devices that interfere with our
access points.

We worked on all fronts to improve connectivity; more bandwidth, more
radio apparatus and the experience of very smart guys.

More details here:

I really hope we can make it work this year. At that point, 3G network should
be less crowded and behave better when/if needed.
