Re: [EVDL] EVLN: Open Source Street-Legal affordable long-range EV4the masses

2015-05-20 Thread MWM via EV
David,
You have raised some great points. I am the 'owner' of the LUKA project so
let me try to address everything.
The weight of the LUKA today is 741kg. (1634lbs). This includes the 2
battery packs. The bat pack is split in two for better weight distribution.
The overall battery size is 19.2kwh. We have this smaller battery in this
'component testing' vehicle.
Will we get there? > We will get somewhere. This is still a project, not a
commercial venture. If nothing else, we will leave an 'open source' legacy.
Others can leverage from plans, bills of materials etc. We may prove that
it is possible to make a car 'street legal' on a budget. We may prove that
hub motors can work or maybe add more weight to the argument that they
really do not work well enough today. We might serial produce the car, we
might mass produce the car. We might sell bits that are hard for people to
make as a 'kit'. A small personal aim is that at least I will be driving a
LUKA to work every day.
This is neither a marketing project nor a fantasy project. We are showing
the project 'warts & all' at hackaday. Hence some of the negative comments
on the web from people who have not read all the project logs. What is on
view at hackaday is a 'component testing' chassis. It has a specific
purpose. To see if the body fits, to see where we will put all the
components, to test all the components. The 'real' chassis will be similar
but have the 'cage' built in, be treated, powder coated & 'altered'. The
'car' you see in the pics & videos is good enough to go for 'type approval'.
It might pass. If it does not pass, we will get a list of things we need to
change. These will be incorporated into the 'real' car.
About Range> 300km is what we expect to achieve from the smaller bat pack.
We are not scientists. We are also not going to do range tests the way car
companies do them. We will just drive the car down a highway & see how far
it goes. We will measure the actual journey on a cell phone app & post the
results at hackaday. If our projections are wrong, they are wrong.
The reason we think we can get such a good range is because (we think) hub
motors will have far less losses than a traditional electric engine. We
have regen braking. The car is (as far as we know) very Aerodynamic.
The great points you raise are about ownership, budget etc. It never
crossed my mind to write these things at hackaday but on reading your post I
can see the 'red flag' issue as real.
I conceived the idea & I am the financial backer of the project. There are
no investors, no creditors (all components are paid for in advance) & no
full time employees. I own a company www.mauriceward.com This medium side
company was established in 1968 operates in 15 European countries. It has
about 1000 employees. The people who have helped me with the project are 4
guys from the IT dept who work this project after hours... If you look at
the videos, you will notice that most of the truck in the background are
Maurice Ward trucks. The MW Motors logo has the same bi-plane as Maurice
ward & co.. There was no intention to hide who we are but this is not a
Maurice Ward group project per say, it is me & a few of the guys seeing what
we can achieve after hours.
The 'budget' I have allocated to this is EUR100K. That has to cover all the
tooling, the 'component testing' vehicle & getting 2 x 'real' cars to e car
tech Munich in October this year. That will be the official launch of the
vehicle. We are well within that budget, even when we count the EUR7K or so
we will need to pay for our little 20sqm stand at e car tech. I will be
posting a spreadsheet at hackaday showing where & how we spend the money.
When we put the project on hackaday a short time ago, we really did not
expect it would end up all over the internet. We very much thought a few
people from the hacker community might see it..
So, the EUR100K gets us to the end of phase 1. If we stop at the end of
phase 1, I will have 3 x very cool electric cars & the world will have a
blueprint for how to build cheapish electric cars using hub motors.
If it looks like there is a demand for the car, we will look at serial /
mass production. Any phase 2 would mean setting up a legal entity & putting
more money in.. But, we are in the unique position that we would not need
investors, banks, debt etc.
The timeline of less than a year is really thanks to the internet. We are
not really car experts. We have good experience with FRP. Within a few
days of the idea being hatched & us figuring our how to make the body, the
serious question 'how are we gonna build a street legal chassis' was raised.
Someone said 'just google 'chassis makers". We found MEV
http://www.mevltd.co.uk/ in the UK & Stuart (the owner) build the 'rolling
chassis' based on our 3D drawing of the body. Stuart is now helping us with
the type approval in the UK (he thinks the project is cool so is now like

streets of Mountain View soon. / KGO
]

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (KGO) --
A new kind of Google self-driving car will be hitting the streets very soon.
Google is switching from an SUV to a custom-built electric car that will
probably turn heads and they will only be navigating the streets of Mountain
View.

It will be an attraction, or possibly a distraction, depending on what you
think of the small, two-seater, electric, self-driving car.

Google designed them this way so its engineers can study how people react to
them and interact with them.

A human will retain manual control as needed and its speed will be limited
to 25 miles an hour.

Joe Hong has driven by the Lexus self-driving vehicles that Google has
tested for six years and speed is not a word he would associate with them.
"They're typically in the fast lane, but going a little bit too slow, so
they're already on the slow side in my experience," he said.

Nurse Jamie Peterson has no fears about being struck by one. "I would trust
it to stop. I would definitely trust it to stop," Peterson said.

This next-phase of testing brings self-driving capability closer to reality
for seniors who fear losing their independence and mobility.

"For a lot of folks they're forced perhaps to give up the keys and that
really limits and decreases their independence," Amy Andonian said.

Ginger Johnson is 84 years old and still driving. "Sometimes we lose the
ability or we have diminished ability to judge distances and speed, so i
think it would be a terrific thing," Johnson said.

Google has built 25 of these prototype cars. They will be put on the streets
of Mountain View a few at a time.

Monica Woodbury said she wouldn't walk in front of a crosswalk if she saw
one of these cars coming, unless the self-driving car was completely
stopped.

That's the kind of behavior that Google will study as it moves forward with
self-driving cars.

Even as Google plans to test its fleet of 100 pod-like self-driving cars on
US roads, its business model remains a bit of a mystery.

Actually building and selling cars might be among the least likely
scenarios. Google and other technology companies now researching cars might
be more interested in licensing software systems to automakers and
collecting the trove of data involved in tracking drivers' movements,
analysts say.

Tech giants Google and Apple are circling the automotive industry because
they foresee a giant transformation of transportation that will change how
people operate cars and what they do inside them, said Oliver Hazimeh, a
partner and automotive expert at PWC, the international accounting and
consulting firm.

"The tech companies want to know how to participate," he said. "Think about
the office in the autonomous car. People can respond to emails, look at
screens and do work."

That creates opportunities to sell services and provide commerce. It will
also generate massive amounts of data on where the cars go and what people
are doing during that travel time, Hazimeh said. Silicon Valley wants a
piece of that.

There are already nascent approaches to this, he said. Insurance companies,
for example, have programs that give reduce rates to drivers that allow
their mileage and driving habits to be tracked electronically.

The automobile industry should expect competition from tech companies and
other new entrants.

Uber, the ride-sharing company, is researching self-driving cars, possibly
as a first step to establishing a robotic taxi service. Apple is reportedly
researching electric car development, although it has not publicly released
details on the project.

Hazimeh said he wouldn

We've seen a fair number of motorcycles converted from gasoline to battery
power, and while we admire each effort, this latest example from Thailand
really grabbed our attention. Not only does it look pretty damn awesome, the
story that accompanies it is also pretty incredible.

Tony Kainev is a Bulgarian ex-pat living the electric dream in Bangkok, and
he snapped the pictures you see above. It seems almost an understatement to
call Kainev an electric vehicle enthusiast. He caught the battery bug after
driving a Tesla Roadster in California some time back, and after moving to
his adopted country, he converted a Toyota Yaris, as well as a scooter and
the e-bike he uses to trim hours from his lengthy, daily commute to work.
Recently, he added a 2015 Zero SR (Zero Motorcycles just became available in
Thailand) to his burgeoning EV collection.

While awaiting the arrival of his new bike, Kainev made a number of visits
to the dealership where he happened upon this converted Ducati. Apparently,
the folks behind the Bangkok Zero Motorcycles outlet also sell a number of
other automotive and motorcycle brands, including the iconic Italian one,
and so have the wherewithal for a project like this. The motivation, it
seems, came from one particular executive who is a pretty big EV fan
himself.

Basically, it's a Hypermotard gifted with the guts of a Zero FX. From what
we understand, the idea was to catch customers' attention with the
established brand, then get their butts on the seat to introduce them to the
electric experience. Patrons would then have an expanded choice. They could
buy a Ducati as they may have planned and, perhaps, get a Zero as well.

While we don't know how well this strategy has worked for its regular
clientele, word has it that it may have been successful in getting one very
significant butt on the battery bandwagon. According to the story told to
Kainev, Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali was in town – the company now produces
its Scrambler in Thailand – and took the electric Duc for a ride on a track,
followed by an outing on a revelatory Zero SR. Beaming from the experience,
Domenicali supposedly remarked words to the effect that this was the first
electric Ducati (we'll forgive him for not being aware of the original
Mission Motors prototype), and that he had been convinced to work with Zero
on an electric model.

If true, this could be a pretty big deal, both for Zero Motorcycles and
electric bikes in general. Ducati is an aspirational brand that could lend
further legitimacy to the cleaner, quieter drivetrain. Of course, being
owned by Volkswagen Group (via Lamborghini, via Audi), the Bologna brand
could probably find resources and EV engineering talent closer to corporate
headquarters, though perhaps, none as familiar with the unique challenge of
integrating bikes with batteries as within Zero.

There has been no official mention of any of this from Ducati, and we expect
they would be unlikely to even mention the word electric until they had, at
least, a plan in place. For its part, Zero Motorcycles has told
AutoblogGreen that it couldn't comment on "strategic partnerships or
collaborations unless we have something concrete to discuss." They did
mention, though, that they look forward to other OEMs entering and expanding
the market, and that sales of its 2015 machines "are tracking well ahead of
last year."

[EVDL] EVLN: My first i3 commute, the tradie who had gazumped the EV spot

2015-05-20 Thread brucedp5 via EV

http://www.carsguide.com.au/car-reviews/2015-bmw-i3-review-in-the-garage-part-1-32529
2015 BMW i3 review | in the garage part 1
Richard Blackburn 15 May 2015

My first commute in the BMW i3 didn’t get off to a great start. After a
weekend of running about, the little electric hatchback was in need of a
recharge and CarsGuide’s carpark had recently installed a dedicated
recharging bay for electric vehicles.

It was impossible to miss the fact that this was an EV parking bay. It’s
painted green, just as disabled spots are painted blue, and is marked EVs
only.

Yet as I turned into the carpark, what was in that spot but a big, ugly,
fossil fuel-propelled Mitsubishi Triton. What to do when confronted by poor
parking etiquette?

I briefly entertained the idea of leaving an indignant note under the wiper
but decided against it on the basis that the i3 stands out like a sore
thumb, making me eminently traceable to the tradie who had gazumped my spot.

“
Its looks are — to be kind — polarising
„

It was a good introduction to a car that has its fair share of ups and
downs. On the plus side, the i3 is hot-hatch quick off the mark, spacious
for a hatchback and popular with the kids.

But there are design flaws and its looks are — to be kind — polarising.

The i3 is without doubt a head-turner, although not all the heads that turn
are impressed by what they see. The seats look like a tired tweed jacket
with leather elbow patches and the dash material looks as if it belongs out
of sight — perhaps on the underside of a parcel shelf.

The timber highlights, though, look classy and are reminiscent of the
panelling on an expensive yacht. The cabin ergonomics are good, the
infotainment controls are easy to use, the outward vision is above average
and the seats are comfortable. But the rear-hinged back doors are already
wearing thin.

Yes, they provide good access to the rear seats but there’s a snag: to open
the rear doors you must first open the fronts. And if you’re in the front,
you have to undo your seat belt to let rear passengers out because it’s
connected to the rear doors.

I learnt this the hard way, tugged violently backwards as my son flung open
the rear door.

Then there’s the range. The official claims seem a little optimistic but
I’ll leave that until I’ve put more kilometres on the clock.

showroom on June 13 to give residents an idea of what a generator
installation would look like.

CT Home Generator Systems was launched in 2011 by Newington Electric Co.
owner Ed Ingalls after the power outages that year drove up demand for
generators that could provide power during blackouts.

The 12,000-square-foot showroom at 72 Pane Road in Newington also
encompasses Newington Electric and CT Electric Car, which is Engall's
business for installing electric vehicle chargers.

The grand opening will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 13 and feature
give-aways for discounted generators.

[EVDL] $10k bounty on Tesla-S hacks entices tinkerers, aggravates Tesla

Every since the first cars rolled out of factories, owners have been
modifying them to suit their own personal needs and tastes. With the
extensive computer controls used in modern cars, people are now finding a
different way to do that.

Certain Tesla Model S owners are giving their cars upgrades, but instead of
changing tires, brake calipers, or paint jobs, they’re changing software.

Tesla itself continually tweaks cars with over-the-air software updates, and
now some owners are making changes themselves.

While Tesla hasn’t explicitly opened the Model S to outside programmers, a
few owners are writing their own code for the car to gather data or perform
new functions, according to the MIT Technology Review.

Joe Pasqua, an employee of a database company in San Carlos, California,
fiddled with Tesla’s official iPhone app to create Visible Tesla, a new app
that further tethers electric cars to smartphones.

The app can lock and unlock doors, operate the climate control, or open the
sunroof. It can also send location-specific text messages depending on where
the car is, and monitor charging.

Owners can also use the app to compare vehicle data, to get a better idea of
how driving style, climate, and other factors affect cars’ performance.
Maximizing range per charge is very important with electric cars for reasons
of both efficiency and practicality.

Tesla doesn’t seem bothered by the third-party app, even though Pasqua
accidentally bombarded the company’s servers with data once. Tesla could
shut down the app if it wanted to, but it hasn’t, Pasqua said.

Another owner tweaking Tesla software is Edward Arthur, a semiconductor
designer from Massachusetts. He wrote a script to check whether the car was
charging at 9:30 a.m. every day. He gets a text message to remind him if the
car isn’t plugged in.

Tesla reportedly hasn’t ruled out offering a software development kit to
help formalize this kind of tinkering, but it isn’t a priority for the
company right now. But that doesn’t mean owners won’t continue finding their
own ways to alter what they get from the factory.

Some Tesla Owners Pimp Their Rides with Code
By Will Knight on May 7, 2015

A few Tesla drivers are rewriting the programming in the Model S to make the
car do interesting new things.

Why It Matters
As cars become more computerized, the behavior of various systems could be
automated.

The Tesla Model S comes with a 17-inch touch screen for entertainment, maps,
and system controls.

Tesla Motors’ Model S isn’t just a symbol of enthusiasm for electric
driving; it’s also a sign of how customizable cars are becoming.

With Internet connectivity, regular software updates, a 17-inch touch-screen
display for the control console, and even its own Web browser, it’s an
impressively high-tech vehicle. And although Tesla hasn’t yet opened it up
to outside programmers, some enthusiasts are already writing code that
gathers data from the car or makes it do something new.

Joe Pasqua, who works for a database company in San Carlos, California,
helped reverse-engineer, or decode, the protocols used to send messages
between the official Tesla iPhone app and the company’s servers. After
logging in with a username and password, Model S owners can use the app to
access a range of data and configure various systems in their car.

Pasqua has created a free app called Visible Tesla that uses the official
app’s protocols to track the status of systems in a Model S over time and
can be used to schedule commands. “You can do all the basic control
functions,” he told me. “You can unlock the doors, and you can turn on the
heater or air conditioner, and you can change the temperature, open the
sunroof—things like that. You can get location information; you can control
the charging function.”

I met Pasqua, appropriately enough, at the Computer History Museum in
Mountain View, California. He showed me Visible Tesla running on his car’s
Web browser in the museum’s parking lot (the software runs on a PC but can
configured for access via the Web).

Visible Tesla lets drivers collect data about their car.

Pasqua and scores of other Visible Tesla users share data on the way
different driving habits affect their cars’ batteries. This way they can,
for example, see if a recent hot spell has caused other Model S batteries to
drain more quickly. Visible Tesla can also effectively add new functionality
to a vehicle by triggering commands based on f

Re: [EVDL] Design News: Why Aren't Electrical Cars Sales (Leases) Better

2015-05-20 Thread David Delman via EV
Not sure if this was mentioned but I was considering leasing a Tesla. The
lease came out to $1600/month for an $81,000 Tesla more than three times
the $499 that I am now paying for the lease in my $51,000 Infiniti Q50.

When I asked why there was such a price difference, this is the answer I
received.

"Well, that is the question I get to answer every day.  First, Infiniti is
a high volume vehicle, with a long history, this makes money available at a
ridiculous low rates, backed by Infiniti.  Also very aggressive residual,
and residual history.  Higher interest rates, plus lower residual, and a
vehicle $3 more equals higher payment.  It’s hard to compare any of the
manufacturers deals to the Tesla model.

The Tesla is a fantastic car, but because they are in limited quantity,
high demand, and virtually a new manufacturer, you can’t compare to the TV
advertisements run for bulk vehicle movement."

Thank you,
Dave Delman

Re: [EVDL] FW: Design News: Why Aren't Electrical Cars Sales Better? It's the battery.

Well I am sorry he got annoyed and left but I still disagree. All we are seeing
is the adoption curve. Any new technology takes time to be mass accepted.
Before the lithium battery electric vehicles were a novelty. Now they are here
to stay.

Thank you for taking the time to give such a lengthy explanation MWM. I
understand your approach much better now, and think you will learn a lot and
have some fun. You may make your goal in range at lower speeds with such a
light vehicle. I have a 2260 lb Suzuki Swift and a spreadsheet that
describes its performance quite accurately. I simply reduced the weight to
1634 lb in the spreadsheet to get a ball park number and got 61 Wh/km at 58
kph, 90 Wh/km at 100 kph. Will be interesting to see how it does. Good
luck!

[EVDL] Electric Planes

2015-05-20 Thread Robert Bruninga via EV
I figured Electrric Airplanes were a long way off.

But last week’s EV Aircraft conference revealed that big companies are
going into production!

They found a niche. Training Airccraft! They fly for one hour training
sessions, can swap batteries in 2 minutes, and can fly all day long that
way.

Wow, why Didn’t I think of that.

Its similar to conventional Wisdom. People think that an EV is useless
until it can go 300 miles and cost less than a Versa. When in fact, only
say 5% of our driving need is 300 miles…

Also, the pilots around here say the typical plane uses MAX power during
climb and then drops back to only 20% power to maintain economical cruise.
This means, a HYBRID aircraft can be built with only 25% as much of a gas
engine while using electric to climb.

What will they think of next?!

Bob

A free online version of Excel is available. One way to get to it is
to go to bing.com and click the OFFICE ONLINE link. If you don't have
a MS account you can create one for free.

Thanks, but for me at least, that's not the problem. I have yet to find an
excel spreadsheet that won't work in the FLOSS program Gnumeric. There
might be some very complex ones that don't, but I'd expect something like
this to be fine.

The problem, as I see it, is access to the data file. That's solved if Lee
posts it on his website.

Lee could also send to to me, and I'd post it in the EVDL library.

I also sent him a link to a free utility that converts spreadsheets to
dynamic web pages. That again could go on his website, the EVDL library, or
both, if the last two are OK with him.
