/"So again, anyone who buys, or sells, or promtes EV's with the idea of public charging for anything other than an emergency simply doesn't get it. (Generally... there are always exceptions)."/ This hasn't been my experience for the last 5 years of using public EVSEs, nor anyone in the local ev club that I am aware of. By the time there are 10^8 EVs on the road there will likely be far more fast DC chargers available, and most of those EVs will be capable of > 150 mile range, so I don't think this will be a widespread problem. -- View this message in context: http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/Public-Charging-Don-t-plan-on-it-tp4676609p4676610.html Sent from the Electric Vehicle Discussion List mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org For EV drag racing discussion, please use NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA)
[EVDL] Public Charging... Don't plan on it!
> ...the other seven Model S sedans were unattended, a sign that their owners may be picking up items at the nearby shopping center while their cars charged. The two drivers needing to charge "were just waiting, waiting, waiting." Bottom line, anyone who buys an EV with the idea of public charging probably bought the wrong car. EV's charge while parked and cars spend about 21 hours a day parked. There can never be enough available public chrgers to support say 100 million EV's on the road.. Sure, there are what, 100,000 gas stations in the USA. Each one with 4 to 8 dual sided hoses. That's about 1 MILLION hoses. And each hose can fuel say 10 cars an hour, times 10 nominal working hours a day, so that is a refueling capacity of about 100 MILLION gas cars. But, a gas-up lasts a week, so you have a 7-to-1 chance of finding an empty pump.. But an EV charge only lasts a day and EV's usually have to charge everyday. And typical Public L2's will charge in about 2 h ours, or about 5 cars a day. So to serve 100 million EV's it will take 20 million public chargers for the same grade of service. But by definition, that means they are always 100% in use. Meaning exactly what is occurring, ... the slots are all full. So they have to overbuild maybe a factor of 2 to make sure you have a 50% chance of finding an empty one. SO that means dependency on public charging would need maybe 40 million public Charging stations (400 times more than gas stations). AND 20 million dedicated parking spots. You see the problem. Whereas those that understand that EV's are best charged at home, ALREADY have available over 200 million charging spots (at home in their driveway). (67% of Americans live in single family detached homes (with an outlet)). So again, anyone who buys, or sells, or promtes EV's with the idea of public charging for anything other than an emergency simply doesn't get it. (Generally... there are always exceptions). They could probably make it so that an unattended car left at a charger could be disconnected by anybody once it's done charging, and the car would then automatically park itself nearby, freeing up the charger spot for somebody else to pull in. b& -- next part -- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... But what is it really like? Bloomberg’s Alexandra Ho set off on a 1,300 mile trip from Shanghai to Beijing, utilizing 6 Supercharging stations and 1 “destination” station, to find out in this video diary entry entitled “Range Anxiety? We Test Drive a Tesla in China”. Truth be told, after watching the report we still don’t get a keen sense of what it is like to travel in an EV across China, but rather just what it is like in general to travel a long distance by car in the country, without much commentary on the Model S itself at all. Hopefully there is an extended report out there somewhere we can dig our teeth into soon. It's a crucial market for Tesla and other companies, as they fight for customers in the world's biggest auto market. However, sales of electric cars have been disappointing in China, with drivers worried about being able to charge their cars. 'CEO sez occasional local supercharging is cool, but it’s meant to be a long-distance thing' http://www.bdlive.co.za/world/americas/2015/07/01/tesla-owners-gripe-over-recharge-waiting;jsessionid=D850818907A835758E4550F734359DD5.present1.bdfm Tesla owners gripe over recharge waiting by Mike Ramsey and Ellen Proper July 01 2015 AMSTERDAM — Matthijs van Seventer won’t take his Model S electric sedan to the Tesla charging station in the southeast part of the city if he is in a hurry. The chargers are typically loaded with taxicabs serving Schiphol airport. "It’s barely viable," he said standing near a row of superchargers, which for Tesla owners are the equivalent of gas pumps to quickly recharge their battery-powered vehicles. "When I arrived there was just one spot left." Mr van Seventer’s frustration reflects a rare rift in what has typically been a cozy relationship between Tesla Motors and its thousands of owners around the world. Free charging at company-run stations is one of a handful of unique incentives aimed at Tesla owners. Federal and local tax credits are available in many markets, and in some cities, including Oslo, Norway, electric vehicles can drive in high-speed lanes normally reserved for buses. Even as Tesla has poured millions of dollars in creating a global network of free charges, owners of the $76,200 and up luxury sedans feel there still aren’t enough. Mimi Kim Jamil recently slipped into the last spot at the San Juan Capistrano (California) Supercharger station where there are eight stalls and plugged in her 85 kilowatt-hour Model S. A moment later, two other Model S drivers pulled in behind. Superchargers can recharge 80% of an 85 kilowatt-hour battery in about 30 minutes. While that’s much longer than the about five minutes needed to refuel a gasoline-powered car, it is more than 10 times faster than a typical Tesla home charger. "I felt bad for them," Ms Jamil said, noting that the other seven Model S sedans were unattended, a sign that their owners may be picking up items at the nearby shopping center while their cars charged. The two drivers needing to charge "were just waiting, waiting, waiting." Tesla is installing superchargers at a rate of about one new station a day around the world to keep up with sales that have reached 60,000 vehicles since it launched three years ago. The company’s pipeline includes a sport-utility vehicle launching this fall, and ambitions to sharply increase annual sales through 2020. Sales growth could put additional strain on the Tesla Supercharger network that currently includes 453 stations and 2,519 chargers, which are capable of cutting charge times from several hours to about 40 minutes. "Tesla sales will drop if they don’t build more supercharger stations," said Roger Chou in San Diego, who has ordered a Model X, but has been driving his brother’s Model S. "If they want to start charging people, that is fine, but be clear about it, so people can make their decision before spending $100,000-plus on a car." The trend has caught the attention of chief executive Elon Musk. During the company’s annual shareholder meeting in June, he indicated the Superchargers are too often being used by people who are driving around town instead of those needing energy for longer road trips, creating lines of people waiting for juice. "There are a few people who are quite aggressively using it for local supercharging," he said. "We’ll sort of send them just a reminder note that it’s cool to do this occasionally, but it’s meant to be a long-distance thing." That didn’t sit well with some owners, because use of the chargers is included in the price of a Tesla, and advertised as being "free for life." While many of its rivals spend big money on advertising, Tesla has invested millions of dollars in charging stations meant to be an extra incentive for buyers to consider its pricey electric car. After Mr Musk addressed the issue at the shareholders meeting, about 500 comments reacting to his stance were made on my.teslamotors.com before site administrators closed it. At that point, the forum on Tesla’s official website was restricted to car owners, who were asked to not speak to the press for fear of airing the issue publicly. Tesla is looking for solutions and has taken additional action beyond sending the letters Mr Musk referenced. Recognising the cabs in Amsterdam might cause a problem, the company built a private supercharger for one of the cab companies operating Teslas; but cabs still use the public stations. "We continue to build out our supercharger network to provide the current and future needs of our customers," Tesla said in a statement in response to the query on how the company will address supercharger use in the future. With a larger selection of plug-in hybrids like the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Audi A3 e-tron, consumers have options American consumers can only hope will arrive one day on U.S. shores, and it makes sense. Europeans are showing a much stronger taste for PHEVs than consumers on this side of the Atlantic. Pure EVs are also selling better in the euro zone this year. Whether it is the lack of available products outside California or the slow-growing infrastructure, sales in the U.S. have plateaued in 2015, even as EV prices have become competitive with gasoline counterparts. Europeans have not have had such issues. Part of the continent’s advantages involves its choices. Like plug-in hybrids, there are several EVs we won’t see anytime soon. Here are three electric vehicles many would want but can’t have in America. 1. Renault ZOE The Renault ZOE is one of the best-selling electric vehicles in the world, but American consumers won’t see it (or any other Renault, for that matter) at a local auto mall. Featuring a range of 121 miles on the European cycle (71 to 105 miles in real-world driving), the ZOE right away would have one of the longest ranges of any EV zipping down U.S. roads. The next update will feature even better range, too. With an equivalent starting price around $21,000, we’d venture to guess it would be a hit on this side of the Atlantic. 2. Nissan e-NV200 Need utility in an electric vehicle? Too bad. U.S. consumers have about zero options on this front, whether you want a plug-in hybrid or a zero-emissions EV. The Nissan e-NV200 is the latter, a pure electric passenger van with a cargo van option. Capable of 105 miles driving range on the European cycle, it offers a boatload of usefulness for carpooling, transporting goods, and other everyday needs, commercial or personal. In fact, it’s so useful and rider-friendly that the gasoline model will become “the Taxi of Tomorrow” in New York City. What a shame it wasn’t the electric edition. 3. Bolloré Bluesummer Chances are the words “Bolloré” and “Bluesummer” mean little (if anything) to you, but you can think of this Italian-made ride from a French billionaire’s company as an electric Suzuki Samurai (another name that may mean nothing to you). It seats four, delivers the open-air jeep effect, and can travel up to 124 miles in city driving on the European cycle. A standard two-door city coupe rents in Paris for about 20 cents a minute through a car-sharing program and runs consumers about $20,000 new, so we’d expect this little guy to be a budget hit in California. Alas, we won’t get the chance anytime soon. The two-venue, fun-filled, family weekends promises a feast of fabulous cars ready to smoke some tyres in the name of charity. Inspired and hosted by BBC broadcaster Chris Evans, both CarFest North (Oulton Park, Cheshire, 31 July-2 August) and CarFest South (Laverstoke Park Farm, Hampshire, 28-30 August) will boast some of the most desirable, rare, and in some cases, most valuable cars ever made. The Cars will be taking to the track to thrill and raise even more money for BBC Children in Need. With a minimum of 25 per cent of all ticket income going directly to the charity CarFest, now in its fourth year, has already raised more than £3.5 million ... Among the cars promised at both venues are the glorious Ferrari 250 SWB (Dirty Dozen), Aston Martin GT12 (Supercars Seven), Paul Newman’s Nissan 300ZX racer (Race Car Ten), and, er, the Flux Capacitor, a customised Enfield Electric car built by TV’s Jonny Smith with a 500hp electric motor in place of the original 8hp one (Fun Four) ...
