The 4.6 liter V8 was the design power plant for this vehicle.
Since the article only speaks of a single Messenger that changed hands recently
and is now destined to stay electric, I would not be surprised if what Wayne is
working on is *this* vehicle from Joe Bortz.

Here's a little more on the Mercury Messenger (the FoMoCo one, not the NASA

The article says the owner is "planning to source a 4.6-liter modular V-8 and
six-speed automatic transmission to make it a running and driveable car," then
that "he´s since decided to keep the concept car electrified." I wonder what
changed his mind, and whether a 120 volt DC drive will satisfy someone who
originally considered a big V8.

In fact I hear that the PSA Peugeot-Citroën EVs from the 1990s were pretty
decent vehicles.

Friends of mine owned ICEV Renaults and Simcas in the 1970s and 1980s. They
certainly had their share of mechanical problems, but I don't recall them
ever grousing about electrical issues. Maybe they were especially lucky,
but I don't associate France with crummy electronics, automotive or
otherwise.

On the other hand, right across the channel you have the infamous "Prince of

Well, I'd go by the test data, though there will be some variability in

REV1 Sunday Race Front Camera - NJMP 2015
RIT EVT Jul 19, 2015
A front view of REV1 running the track on Saturday during the eMotoRacing
varsity challenge - July 2015.
]

For some time now, every year in Millville, New Jersey, colleges and other
competitors from different locations build and race electric motorcycles in
the hopes of taking home the win and zapping the competition at the
e-MotoRacing all-electric race series.

This year, however, was different. From July 10-12, RIT was the only college
that showed up. It represented the underdog in a race of one of six
experienced bike teams to compete in the all-electric vehicle race. Although
competitor’s bike components were normally top secret, I was able to gain
some insight as to what the RIT bike ran on from an exclusive interview with
the EVT (Electronic Vehicle Team).

Here’s what I learned: The REV1 (RIT Electric Vehicle 1) was designed around
a 2005 Kawasaki Ninja ZX6RR chassis. The bike’s gasoline components were
gutted until the inner chassis was bare and built from the ground up.

For power, the bike utilizes a Zero Z-Force 75-7 motor paired with a Sevcon
size 6 controller, which takes the DC current from the batteries and
converts it to AC for the motor to utilize. This also allows the bike’s top
speed to vary from 100-120mph. The motor generates a maximum power of 54hp
at 4300rpm and 68 foot-pounds of torque, making this bike capable of
launching from 0-60 mph in just 5.2 seconds.(Barry Allen would be pleased
with this speed.)

Not only did the team fabricate their own battery management system, battery
containment modules, and structural framing for the powertrain, but they did
it while utilizing in-house data collection and analysis software to enable
for maximum efficiency.

Before the race began, I had the chance to meet the team’s designated rider,
Karl Smolenski, an Engineer at the Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based
Sciences and Education and a true bike enthusiast. Both he and the crew were
ecstatic as the underdog team wheeled the bike to the track. The bike was
equipped with two Go Pro cameras; one in the middle of the front fender
(embedded below) and the other on the right rear fender for different
angles.

Saturday’s race started strong as the bike dominated through its first two
laps, but as time progressed, the batteries started to die down quickly.
This caused a significant decrease in power output and the bike to fall
behind. The same inevitable results occurred the following day. (See the
Race results for Saturday and Sunday’s eSuperSport race here).

The Team’s spirits were far from crushed when they received fifth place,
though. Instead, the they celebrated by discussing improvements to be made
next year, cheering as they watched the GoPro footage and sharing the good
sportsmanship as they took photographs with their competitors:

In spite of the commotion, I had the opportunity to follow up with Jeffrey
Botticello, EVT’s Administrative Leader, to discuss what had gone wrong with
the bike and how they planned to fix it. His response is as follows:

“We determined that the reason why the bike dropped speed so much in the
later laps was because the battery voltage was dropping below what the motor
controller was expecting from them. This caused a dip in power. We plan on
remedying this problem by adding two extra battery cells to increase the
total voltage of the pack.”

Next year, after several planned modifications have been made, the team
endeavors to compete in the race and take home the win.

[EVDL] EVLN: Racing to make the best EV in the Las_Vegas-NV valley

2015-07-30 Thread brucedp5 via EV

http://www.tribtown.com/view/story/5036fa83716b420886fabeb3f15c6fee/NV--Electric-Cars-Competitors
Race is on to make the best electric car in the valley
By DANIEL ROTHBERG, Las Vegas Sun July 24, 2015

LAS VEGAS — Long before Tesla announced plans to build a $5 billion electric
battery factory near Reno, a local group for years had been tracking the
quiet rev of the electric car industry in and around the valley.

On the website of the Las Vegas Electric Vehicle Association is a poster for
Lectra Motors, a Las Vegas-based company that in 1981 tried to convert a
fleet of Datsuns into all-electric vehicles. The poster features six Datsuns
beneath a golden desert sunrise. "The dawn of a new era," its tagline reads.

"It lasted for all of about three months before the principal investor
pulled his money out and went home," said Lloyd Wayne Reece, president of
the Las Vegas Electric Vehicle Association.

Three decades later, electric vehicle sales, though growing, still represent
a small fraction of total car sales in the United States. The new era Lectra
Motors promised has not dawned.

But in fits and starts, tinkerers, dreamers and entrepreneurs in the valley
have retrofitted, manufactured and assembled electric batteries for the
road, the skies, the military and medicine.

These are a few of the valley's power players in the electric car business.

LOCAL MOTORS
Phoenix-based Local Motors, which has a hub downtown, is pursuing an
alternate manufacturing approach. The company offers a 3-D-printed car, the
Strati, which features an electric engine that can take it 62 miles on one
charge.

It takes 44 hours to print the car, Local Motors officials say, and the
company plans to reduce production time to 24 hours. The goal is to have the
car cleared for the road by 2016.

The downtown Las Vegas microfactory employs two full-time staffers and
additional employees during peak seasons. The location, which includes a
retail space, soon will house a large-scale 3-D printer.

"Las Vegas is an important hub for the future of electric vehicles, and
we're glad to be a part of it," spokesman Adam Kress said.

Within the next 10 years, the company hopes to open 100 microfactories
around the globe.

XTREME GREEN ELECTRIC VEHICLES
Xtreme Green Electric Vehicles Inc. runs a 50,000-square-foot factory in
North Las Vegas specializing in rugged vehicles. The company has clients in
the United States and internationally, in South Africa, Saudi Arabia and a
number of South American countries.

"We are rapidly working on expanding our overseas presence because they seem
to really understand the value of our electric vehicles," founder and CEO
Neil Roth said.

Roth started his company in the valley because he lives here. But Nevada is
a good place to do business -- the leasing conditions and tax incentives are
beneficial, he says.

Roth, who praised Gov. Brian Sandoval's administration for its focus on
creating jobs and diversifying the economy, will travel with the governor to
Poland this summer on a trade mission.

For now, XTreme focuses exclusively on manufacturing outdoor utility
vehicles, ATVs and service vehicles for police departments, park services
and universities. Not only are the vehicles electric and green, but keeping
them running is cheaper than gasoline, he said. For every $1,000 spent on
gas, Roth said, only about $10 is spent on electric.

By producing ATVs and utility vehicles, Xtreme has carved out a steady niche
for itself. But the company hasn't reached the point of branching out into
consumer products.

"We need to expand and create the cash flow we need to go into that
business," Roth said.

MIMS MOTORS
Talk to Eric Mims, CEO of Mims Motors, for five minutes, and he will present
in detail his vision to market an electric car to the masses.

Mims claims to have developed a two-seater prototype that can travel, on a
single charge, more than three times the distance of the Tesla Model S,
which achieves a range of 270 miles.

Mims said recently his company was $2.1 million and 48 weeks away from being
able to put cars on the road and up for sale. The company still is raising
funds but is taking pre-orders on its website.

K2 ENERGY
In Henderson, K2 Energy manufactures rechargeable lithium iron phosphate
batteries, which K2 officials say are safer than the lithium-ion batteries
favored by Tesla. Lithium-ion batteries can explode.

"When you have troops involved, or in a medical situation, you want the
safest batteries on the market," marketing director Lysle Oliveros said.

Nine years ago, K2 started with about four employees and a couple of card
tables. It since has grown to include about 65 employees.

K2 doesn't specifically focus on cars, but Oliveros says the company's
batteries are in a lot of vehicles -- including retrofitted older hybrids
and many cars produced by high-end manufacturers.

But it's hard to justify breaking into the consumer market when many
mainstream manufacturers get batteries at a disco

City runaround: The Mr Bean star stands next to his electric BMW i3, which
costs £30,000 and reaches 93mph
]

- Mr Bean actor has been seen in an electric BMW i3, which costs £30,000

- With top speed of 93mph it's a stark contrast to F1, that can reach 240mph

- He sold the supercar earlier this year - 18 years after he paid £634,000
for it

- Economical runaround could save on insurance and the congestion charge

After pocketing £8million from the sale of his beloved McLaren F1, you might
have expected Rowan Atkinson to splash out on another supercar.

But the Mr Bean actor appears to have opted for something a bit more
economical – and eco-friendly.

The comedian has been seen in an electric BMW i3, which costs £30,000 and
has a top speed of 93mph.

It is in stark contrast to his prized F1, one of only 64 in the world, which
was capable of reaching a thrilling 240mph.

The actor sold the supercar earlier this year, 18 years after he paid
£634,000 for it.

However, while the sought after sports car completed less than 10 miles to
the gallon, his new runaround has a range of up to 100 miles on a full
charge.

It will also save the Blackadder star a significant sum on his insurance
bill. The annual cost to insure his F1, which he once crashed into a tree in
2011, was said to be around £60,000.

In 2013 he successfully claimed £910,000 from his insurers to fix the
supercar – the highest repair bill ever recorded in Britain.

[image] Flash: Rowan Atkinson poses with a McLaren F1. He bought one of
just 64 made in the world and it has a top speed of 240mph

His BMW however, is so cost effective that it is even exempt from the
£11.50-a-day London Congestion Zone charge because it is considered so
environmentally friendly.

It is charged using public power points or even standard plug sockets, and
takes four hours to achieve a full charge from empty.

Atkinson, said to be worth £71million, owns an impressive collection that
includes a Honda NSX, a Jaguar Mk7, an Aston Martin DB2, a vintage Ford
Falcon, a 1939 BMW 328 and a Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe.

Earlier this month it was revealed that the 60-year-old comic actor is
selling his former family home in Oxfordshire following the break-up of his
24-year marriage to wife Sunetra, 53, in February last year.

He is now dating comedian Louise Ford, 32, and bought a £4.65million house
in North London last September.

Haddon near Peterborough in August 2011

The house sale has fuelled speculation that Rowan could be heading for a
costly divorce from Sunetra, with whom he has two children, Ben, 21, and
Lily, 19.

Atkinson first met his wife in the late 1980s, when she was working as a BBC
make-up artist, and they wed in 1990.

The couple were building an £11 million dream home elsewhere in Oxfordshire
when they split last year.

Atkinson met stand-up comic Ford - star of Sky sitcom Chickens - in 2003
when they starred together in the West End play Quartermaine’s Terms.
