[EVDL] EVLN: Ducati e-Motorcycle> holding on to its stellar reputation
https://interestingengineering.com/ducati-announces-electric-motorcycle-is-in-the-works Ducati Announces Electric Motorcycle is in the Works January, 20th 2019 John Loeffler After Harley Davidson showed off its electric motorcycle at CES 2019, Ducati CEO reveals an all-electric Ducati is in development. Ducati Announces Electric Motorcycle is in the Works Pixabay After Harley Davidson showcased their company’s first all-electric motorcycle at CES 2019, it became clear the electric vehicle revolution was making its way to the motorcycle market, something that Ducati confirms by announcing that the company was nearing production of their first all-electric motorcycle. The Future is Electric As reported by Micah Toll at Electrek, as early as 2017, Ducati Western Europe’s Managing Director Edouard Lotthé said that Ducati was planning on introducing both an electric scooter and an electric motorcycle. However, the earliest they could conceivably make it to market was 2021 and that wasn’t guaranteed. Now, however, there’s confirmation that an electric Ducati will be introduced soon. At a recent Moto Student event, the CEO of Ducati, Claudio Domenicali, announced to the crowd that “The future is electric, we’re not far from starting series production.” Ducati isn’t a stranger to electric vehicles, Toll points out. They have produced several models of electric bicycles in conjunction with other firms and Ducati has previously produced an electric motorcycle concept vehicle along with the Milan Polytechnic School of Design. Ducati Responding to Growing Demand For Electric Motorcycles In addition to Harley Davidson and Ducati, other motorcycle manufacturers are getting in on the electric motorcycle market. Toll lists several manufacturers in his piece who are producing electric motorcycles. Italy’s Energica has long been manufacturing electric sports bikes, including high-performance models whose speeds exceed 150+ mph. Other brands such as Zero have unveiled a new line of electric motorcycles for 2019. Lightning Motorcycles is set to unveil their latest model called the Strike. The Strike features impressive performance, reaching a top speed of 150 mph, a range of 150 miles, and can fast-charge in about 35 minutes. What’s more, the starting price for the Strike is $12,998, more than 60% less than Harley Davidson’s LiveWire, which is priced at nearly $30,000. Rise of the Urban Bikes While the history of motorcycles usually features open roads and fast speeds, the future of motorcycles is becoming increasingly urban. In cities, a motorcycle will rarely ever need to exceed 50 mph, much less 150 mph and they rarely need a range greater than 50-60 miles for a round trip. With this in mind, Super SOCO’s TC Max features a much more modest 62 mph top speed and a range of 68 miles and Fly Free has three models that top out at around 40-50 mph. The TC Max will sell for a little over $5,000, while Fly Free’s offerings can be purchased in the neighborhood of $4,500. The Future of Electric Vehicles Harley-Davidson Will Release an Electric Motorcycle Next Year As the effects of climate change become more and more apparent around the world, the need to transition away from burning fossil fuels and towards more environmentally-friendly vehicles will become more pressing and the market for electric vehicles of all kinds will only continue to grow. Ducati, Harley Davidson, and others show is that vehicle makers of all kinds recognize this reality and are positioning themselves to expand their product lines for the future. By giving motorcycle enthusiasts what they want while producing vehicles that the world desperately needs, Ducati and others are showing the path forward for vehicle makers of all kinds, both two-wheeled and four-wheeled, on how to survive in a rapidly changing world without having to sacrifice what made their companies great in the first place. https://electrek.co/2019/01/18/tesla-recalling-14000-model-s-china-takata-airbag-issue/ Tesla is recalling over 14,000 Model S vehicles exported to China due to Takata airbag issue Jan. 18th 2019 Fred Lambert [image https://i1.wp.com/electrek.co/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/05/tesla-crash-test-e1462468874775.jpg (crash test) ] Tesla is starting to recall over 14,000 Model S vehicles exported to China as part of the worldwide Takata airbag issue. Takata’s faulty airbag inflators resulted in the largest automotive recall in U.S. history and it got even bigger over the last few years when they added 40 million more airbags, including some installed in Tesla vehicles. The recall affects over 40 million vehicles and it is one of the most complex ever undertaken. For Tesla, it involves all Model S vehicles produced between 2012 and 2016. Technically, Tesla is only required to replace the airbags in cars located in regions designated as “high humidity”, but the automaker decided to not take any chance and recall all of them – starting with the ones delivered in 2012. The problem becomes more significant over time so Tesla is starting with older vehicles, but there are so many of them that it is gradually addressing the issue. Tesla started replacing passenger airbags in all 2012 Model S sedans back in 2017 and now it’s China’s turn. Today, the Chinese government announced that Tesla officially filed for the recall of the Model S in China (translated from Chinese): “The co-pilot airbag of the vehicle within this recall range is equipped with an ammonium nitrate gas generator without a desiccant produced by Takada. When the co-pilot airbag is deployed, the gas generator may be abnormally damaged, causing the debris to fly out and injuring people inside of the vehicle, posing a safety hazard. Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. will replace the improved co-pilot airbags for vehicles within the scope of the recall to eliminate safety hazards.” They said that it is affecting 14,123 vehicles produced during the period from February 4, 2014 to December 9, 2016. Owners should be contacted via mail with the official information. % Bolt EV is based of Sonic ice, both are made at same plant % http://www.thedetroitbureau.com/2019/01/chevy-sonic-could-be-next-as-gm-kills-off-slow-selling-passenger-cars/ Chevy Sonic Could Be Next as GM Kills Off Slow-Selling Passenger Cars Jan.18, 2019 Paul A. Eisenstein [image http://www.thedetroitbureau.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/2017-Chevrolet-Sonic-sedan.jpg The Sonic (ice) sedan in a sporty RS trim level as well, including blacked out wheels, wasn't enough to jumpstart sales. ] Several more plants also on endangered list. The Chevy Sonic is limping along and appears ripe to be discontinued by GM. In the northern Detroit suburb of Orion Township, one of General Motors’ assembly plants is hanging on by a thread. The factory is barely running on one shift and, were it not for the Chevrolet Bolt EV, might have been a fourth plant on the list of assembly lines GM said it would shut down last November. The automaker has actually increased production of the all-electric Bolt in recent months, but demand for the Chevrolet Sonic, the other model rolling off the line there has dropped to less than 2,000 a month, barely enough to bother, it seems. The Last Word! TheDetroitBureau.com first warned that the subcompact Sonic was on the endangered list in April 2017 and now, it seems, its fate may be sealed. The Wall Street Journal is reporting Sonic’s days are numbered, though a spokesperson for Chevy says that, at least for now, there is nothing formal to be announced. Chevy had high hopes for the Sonic when it launched the small car in 2012 as a replacement for the old Aveo. It was one of several small models, along with the even more Lilliputian Chevrolet Spark, targeted at buyers on a budget and struggling with gas prices that had surged as high as $4 a gallon. To justify building the two models in the States, rather than Korea or Europe, GM had asked for and received concessions from the United Auto Workers Union that added up to hundreds, even thousands of dollars a vehicle. That was major news on products with only the slimmest of profit margins. Initially, the Sonic seemed to fare reasonably well, by 2014 sales peaking at just over 93,000. Last year, however, they barely topped 20,000, And with the economy reasonably strong, while gas prices are hovering just below $2 a gallon in much of the country, Sonic has become little more than an afterthought for buyers – especially with reasonably affordable alternative in the crossover category, such as the Chevrolet Trax. The only reason Chevy didn’t kill off the Sonic earlier, according to one well-placed source who spoke to TheDetroitBureau.com, is that it could fill in the gaps on the line between Chevrolet Bolt EVs. But with sales of the electric vehicle gaining momentum it’s become less and less necessary to keep the Sonic rolling at the Orion plant, too. Were it not for the importance of the Bolt as Chevrolet’s first all-electric model, the bowtie brand might simply abandon it, too, shuttering the suburban plant, as well. GM already is set to close three assembly plants – one in Detroit, one in Lordstown, Ohio, and a third in Oshawa, Ontario – as well as two component plants. All told, more than 14,000 workers will be impacted by those closings, as well as a cutback of white-collar staff. Six passenger car models will drive off into the sunset, meanwhile, including three other Chevy products: the compact Cruze, the Volt plug-in hybrid and the full-size Impala sedan. Add to the list Cadillac’s CT6 and XTS sedans, and the midsize Buick LaCrosse. At least a few more GM plants are considered at risk, according to industry analysts, including one near Michigan’s capital city Lansing, one in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and another in Fairfax, Kansas. Officially, GM has only said that it has “unallocated” product that had been built in the Detroit-Hamtramck, Oshawa and Lordstown factories. Technically, that means they could stay open if new products move in to replace vehicles, like the Cruze, that are being dropped. That will be one of the key demands from the UAW when it begins negotiating a new, four-year contract with GM next summer. GM CEO Mary Barra earlier this week indicated new products are coming – including an all-electric Cadillac that brand teased during a preview ahead of the North American International Auto Show’s opening. But Barra quickly dashed hopes that those upcoming products could save the three plants closing this year. “We need to make sure that we keep the capacity utilization up at other plants that we’re still working to improve,” Barra said, referring to the Lansing, Bowling Green and Fairfax facilities. The 220EV is the third electric model introduced by Peterbilt, joining the 520EV refuse truck announced in 2017 and last year’s 579EV regional-haul tractor. The company plans to put six 220EV units in service as part of a customer field test later this year, with a goal of 30 to 40 Peterbilt electric vehicles on the road by the end of 2019. “We now have refuse, regional haul and local pickup & delivery covered,” said Jason Skoog, Peterbilt general manager. “We think those three applications are going to have the most immediate and near-term payback for our customers from an ROI perspective.” The 220EV is a collaborative effort among Peterbilt, Meritor and TransPower, a San Diego-based company that specializes in battery-vehicle integration for the medium- and heavy-duty markets. Like its 520EV and 579EV electric siblings, the 220EV uses TransPower battery packs but adds the Meritor Blue Horizon eAxle (introduced at last year’s ACT Expo). The drive axle has 2.67:1 starting gear and 1:1 final gear ratios. The eAxle’s motor is mounted inside the axle itself, eliminating the need for chassis mount and driveline and opening up space between the frame rails for mounting battery components. The 220EV is equipped with an 1two-stage 1-kW onboard charger. A standard 220-volt AC connection can charge the batteries in 11 to 13 hours, and a high-voltage DC fast charger can reduce charge time between one and three hours. The two TransPower battery packs provide 148 kWh and a 100-mile operating range. The 220EV weights approximately 2,000 pounds more than the Model 220 diesel cabover. With customer field trials ramping up this year and continued Peterbilt is taking an intentionally deliberate approach to vehicle electrification with ongoing validation testing at the Paccar Technical Center to ensure its electric vehicles meet Peterbilt standards and customer expectations. “We have customers in a lot of applications that have different needs, from performance to green image,” said Scott Newhouse, Peterbilt chief engineer. “The different technologies we bring to our trucks, including electrification, is all to support that, support how they want how they want to position themselves in the industry, to support their customers’ needs as well as their profitability.” [© equipmentworld.com] https://www.bulktransporter.com/trucks/peterbilt-adds-medium-duty-all-electric-truck-ev-lineup Peterbilt adds medium-duty all-electric truck to EV lineup Jan 15, 2019 Peterbilt Motors Company recently unveiled its new all-electric medium-duty Model 220EV. How's that going to work? -Chris https://news.yahoo.com/electric-ford-f-150-pickup-16491.html An All-Electric Ford F-150 Pickup Truck Is Happening January 17, 2019 Joey Capparella (Car and Driver) -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... (SPOT.ph) The Department of Transportation and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board on January 18 launched eSakay electric jeepneys, now plying the Makati-Mandulyong route. The initiative is part of the government's mordernization program of public utility vehicles, in which e-vehicles are gradually being rolled out around the Metro. A total of 15 eSakay jeep units, Meralco's e-vehicle venture, are set to service commuters going to Mandaluyong from Makati and vice versa. The e-jeeps will follow a route from Buendia MRT to Mandaluyong City Hall via Jupiter Street. The original route from Circuit Makati seems to have been replaced due to the the two-year closure of the Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge. The jeepneys are designed with a side entrance and equipped with WiFi, GPS, CCTV cameras, and USB charging ports. The best part? You wouldn't have to worry about paying more than your usual jeepney ride because the basic fare is also priced at P9. An automated fare collection system will be utilized by the jeepneys. "Aligned with the company’s goal of pioneering innovative energy solutions, Meralco supports sustainability in transportation via the company’s initiatives in helping create an effective and viable electric vehicle ecosystem," Meralco spokesperson Joe Zaldarriaga said in a report in March 2018. eSakay Inc. is a registered subsidiary of the electric power company. [EVDL] EVLN: Ford F-150 e-Truck promised
% Automaker e-truck designs> So, when the public seen a truck's front lacking the waste-ice-heat radiator grill, they will know its an Electric? (Can you say wind-pushing air-dam to make it look like a truck-ice?) % https://news.yahoo.com/electric-ford-f-150-pickup-16491.html An All-Electric Ford F-150 Pickup Truck Is Happening January 17, 2019 Joey Capparella (Car and Driver) [image https://hips.hearstapps.com/hmg-prod/images/ford-f-150-ev-1547745677.jpg Illustration by Alexander Stoklosa ] Numerous startup automakers, among them Rivian and Tesla, have promised fully electric pickup trucks in the near future, and now the leading pickup-truck producer in the United States says it's getting into the game. Ford president Jim Farley told investors on January 16 that a battery-electric version of the F-150 (illustrated above) is in the cards, and a Ford spokesperson has confirmed to C/D that this is the case. Depending on when it arrives, the electric F-150 could be the first pickup of its kind to go on sale in America; Rivian says it will start delivering its R1T pickup here in "late 2020" and Tesla head Elon Musk said the company "might" reveal its electric truck sometime in 2019. It's a sure bet that we'll have to wait for a next-generation F-150 to arrive before we see any electrified versions. A hybrid version of the truck has been promised for 2020, and the current generation of the truck has been around since the 2015 model year. Refreshed for 2018, the existing F-150 is likely to stick around for the 2020 model year, meaning the new truck seems poised to arrive in calendar year 2020 as a 2021 model. Releasing the fully electric version at launch would make a big splash, but Ford is more likely to show the revolutionary new version a few months after the conventional gas-powered truck gets redesigned. There are no mechanical details about the Ford F-150 EV at this point, as little information exists about Ford's impending plans to offer several new electrified models across its lineup. The electric F-150 is likely to share some components with the upcoming Mustang-inspired electric crossover, but the truck will need a larger battery pack and a more powerful electric motor to support its size and meet expectations for towing and hauling duties. To beat Rivian's claims for its truck, Ford will need to offer more than the R1T's supposed payload capacity of 1764 pounds and towing capacity of 11,000 pounds. [EVDL] EVLN: Platooning 40t eCascadia Class8-18whl/big-rig e-semi-truck
https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/daimler-ecascadia-semi-truck-test-drive/ Driving Daimler’s 40-ton eCascadia big rig isn’t just fun, it’s electrifying 01.18.19 John R. Quain [images / Daimler AG https://icdn5.digitaltrends.com/image/daimler-ecascadia-vegas-720x720.jpg eCascadia https://icdn2.digitaltrends.com/image/daimler-ecascadia-daylight-1200x.jpg video flash ] “Go slow.” Yeah, you don’t have to tell me twice. It’s the first time I’ve ever driven a full-blown, road-hogging, fully loaded (78,000 pounds!) tractor trailer. Of course, I’m going to take it easy. Why is Daimler letting me take a massive vehicle out for a spin, during 2019 CES? I don’t have a Class B commercial trucker’s license, and while I’ve driven everything from a Lamborghini Huracán to a Rolls-Royce Wraith, I’ve got no experience with big rigs. Because this tractor trailer is electric. And I’m driving it on a closed Las Vegas track. And it’s actually really cool. The eCascadia is based on the diesel Cascadia from Daimler’s Freightliner division, a Class 8 18-wheeler and one of the most popular long-haul trucks currently on the road in North America. By allowing me to take it for a spin, Daimler is making a bold statement that it is out in front (way out in front) of much hyped upstarts like Tesla and Thor. The eCascadia is real, drives like a charm, and is about to undergo actual testing in the U.S. on public roads as Daimler delivers 20 of the vehicles to Penske. With professional truckers behind the wheel running regular routes, Daimler hopes to learn more about how the vehicles handle, endure the rigors of the road, deal with charging and route issues, and manage other factors that can’t be accounted for until these trucks are used in the real world. Daimler is making a bold statement that it is out in front of much hyped upstarts like Tesla and Thor. While battery powered sedans aren’t so radically different to drive than traditional cars, the electric truck is a major departure from a diesel-powered, boisterous big rig. Gone is the lurching and stomach-churning up- and down-shifting of a big diesel truck. The electric model is balanced and poised. That means it’s easier to drive and, by extension, it should be safer to operate. Also eliminated are the noise pollution of the incessant roar of traditional tractor trailers, not just the particulates and smog. The electric power is nearly noiseless and made even quieter thanks to the addition of aerodynamic fairings and air dams. Even the latest Cascadia driver assistance technologies like lane keeping and adaptive cruise control, available only on the diesel version, are no match for the eCascadia in terms of ride comfort and drivability. The eCascadia accelerates smoothly and glides to a virtually silent stop. I had no trouble taking the truck around a course and yet, also never felt I wasn’t always in control (I only took it up to about 50 miles per hour). There are some things that had to be adjusted on the eCascadia to account for the electric power. To prevent drivers from tearing up the tires, for example, Daimler had to put torque limiting on the vehicle to keep the low-end power that electric motors provide from being abused. There’s still plenty of power to merge the rig onto a highway, but not so much that you’re tempted to drag race the 18-wheeler on city streets. daimler ecascadia semi truck test drive daylight Of course, the eCascadia is still a tractor trailer, which becomes immediately apparent when a neophyte like me gets behind the wheel. The flatter steering wheel placement — necessary on trucks so that the wheel doesn’t bang against the driver’s knees — and the massive blind spots are initially intimidating. I kept checking to make sure my turns were wide enough for the trailer to clear the cones on the track. And the hushed electric power can be deceptive: You’ve still got tons of weight behind you, meaning that stopping distances are agonizingly long. Gone is the lurching and stomach-churning shifting of a big diesel truck. The electric model is balanced and poised. The eCascadia has four electric motors (two on each axle) and can deliver up to 730 horsepower. With 550-kilowatt-hour batteries, the truck has a rated range of 250 miles. Daimler says it could be recharged to about 80 percent of full power in 90 minutes (giving it a 200-mile range). The truck does not, unfortunately, have some of the systems developed on the company’s autonomous rig. There are no video systems in the front A-pillars, for example, to eliminate rear-view blindspots, and it doesn’t possess the kind of semi-autonomous highway autopilot systems Daimler has been testing in Nevada. Still, it’s easy to see how those systems could be incorporated, making a professional trucker’s life much easier and safer. That is definitely one of the goals, according to the CEO of Daimler Trucks North America, Roger Nielsen. So the company has been assessing and reassessing
