Kia Motors UK Introducing our new star, the Niro | All-New e-Niro | Kia
Oct 2, 2018 - Uploaded by Kia Motors UK 0:14
Introducing our new star, the Niro. #PowerToSurprise ...
]

Kia's new Niro EV adopts a smaller battery than the Hyundai Kona Electric
it's based on - meaning it'll be launched here at a lower price.

Kia New Zealand intends to place the Niro EV in the market in two variants,
an EX 289 that will sell for $67,990 and an EX 455 edition that carries a
$73,990 price tag.

The model numbers tell the story, each giving optimal range in kilometres,
as measured independently.

The 455 model has a 64kWh lithium-ion polymer battery and mostly identical
performance attributes to its under-skin doppelganger, the Hyundai Kona
Electric, which has been on sale since last year in two variants.

The most expensive edition, the Elite costs $79,990 while the price leader,
simply known as Kona Electric, costs the same as the EX 455.

The reason why the 289 slips into the $60k band is because it regresses to a
less powerful drivetrain that does not yet configure in the Kona here.

The entry Kia's 39.2kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack is matched to a
100kW/395Nm motor.

Ranges cited for electric vehicles have often been called into question. The
Kia NZ expectations, however, appear to conform to findings established by a
newly introduced barometer that has potential to be especially accurate,
since it follows a stricter set of guidelines than alternate regimes.

The World Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP), which enacted in
Europe last year and has become a measure for many new cars coming here, has
particular meaning for Kia.

?WLTP testing a few months ago led to a downgrading of results proposed by
Kia for the electric Niro; the figures presented by the car brand prior to
the independent analysis subsequently being described as an overstatement.

As result of the models being assessed under the WLTP regime, the 64kWh
Niro's optimal range rating was downgraded from 484km to 455km, while the
model with the smaller pack's was reset from 310km to 255km. The WLTP
findings were announced in December and Kia did not contest them.

Hyundai on launching the 64kWh Kona said it expected that variant to provide
in excess of 400km range, but also noted an optimal 470km is claimed in
other markets.

At time of the Kona EV's release, Hyundai NZ indicated clear interest in the
smaller power unit, but has since shown no inclination to deliver it. Does
the Niro exercise suggest any price saving is too modest to bother, given
the big decrease in range?

Kia Motors New Zealand general manager Todd McDonald argues there is a place
for both cars.

"By providing two power options at different price points we're giving
buyers the opportunity to decide which Niro EV best suits their
requirements.

"Even the 289km range is far superior to some fully electric cars on the
market and the 455km option is simply stunning."

Interestingly, while the 64kWh Niro and Kona Electric share the same specs
for the battery pack, they have different suppliers.

The battery for the Niro is supplied by SK Innovation, while the Kona's
comes from LG Chem, both based in South Korea.

The e-Niro's battery is water-cooled, a first for Kia, helping increase
capacity and energy density.

In either placement the 64kWh electric motor delivers 150kW of power and
395Nm of torque to the front wheels.

Hyundai says Kona is capable of accelerating from a standstill to 100kmh in
7.6 seconds. The Niro, according to overseas' data, is 0.2s slower. The 289
requires 9.8s to hit the highway limit from a standing start.

Kia New Zealand has yet to announce exact availability of the battery Niro,
which is called e-Niro in most other countries, saying only that it will be
here within a few months.

Which Kona will the 455 match up to best in respect to specification? The EX
fitout that spans both Niros has yet to be explained, though Kia here has
suggested it will be fulsome. They say the models will have three years free
scheduled servicing or up to 45,000kms, whichever comes first.

The prototype looks pretty similar to the K-ZE concept. Spy shots credit to
Weibo.

India’s RNTBCI (Renault Nissan Technology & Business Center India)
spearheaded the development of Kwid, based on the alliance’s CMF-A platform.
However, development of the electric version of Renault’s low-cost
micro-crossover is happening in China.

Renault and it’s Chinese partner Donfeng has created a new joint venture
last year under the banner eGT New Energy Automotive which is responsible
for coming with the Kwid EV. The first prototypes have already started
testing in public, signalling that things are progressing as per plans. We
expect to see the production version ready for the Chinese market towards
the end of this year and reach Europe by 2021.

India being a primary market for Kwid, the pure electric version will
eventually be launched in our market. In fact, last year, the French
automaker announced that it will launch four new products in India by 2022,
of which one will be an EV.

The Renault Kwid electric was previewed in the form of K-ZE near production
concept on the eve of Paris Motor Show 2018. The camouflaged prototypes
spotted in China look pretty close to the concept, complete with narrow LED
lights. Given that the electric Kwid will also have Europe in its list of
target markets, it will be significantly more premium than the regular
versions that are currently on sale in India and Brazil.

While the basic shape and dimensions remain similar, the Kwid EV will
feature a larger front grille, sportier bumpers, new LED detailing for the
taillights, funkier alloy wheels, etc. The interior too will have an
upmarket appeal with plusher seats, better connectivity, and additional
features.

Not much is known about the technical aspects of the Kwid electric’s
powertrain but the manufacturer has revealed that the EV variant will employ
new sub-frame and axles. Given that competitive pricing will be the Renault
Kwid’s USP, the micro-crossover is expected to employ a brand new powertrain
which is developed from scratch with strict cost targets rather than simply
borrowing its hardware from the ZOE. The K-ZE concept has a claimed range of
250 km, so we expect the production model to stay in the ballpark.

In India, the Renault Kwid EV would be competing with the likes of pure
electric versions of Maruti WagonR, and Tata Tiago. All these are planned
for launch post 2020.

Kia's boxy little Soul hatchback got a classy redesign for 2020, and we now
know it also gets a nice bump in gas mileage ...

Meanwhile, the Soul also is adding to the ranks of high-mileage electric
cars from mainstream brands. The all-electric 2020 Soul Electric has posted
an EPA efficiency score of 114 mpg-equivalent and a range of 243 miles; that
beats the 239-mile range for the more SUV-ish Kia Niro EV, but it falls
short of 258 miles and the 120 mpg-e rating for the corporate cousin Hyundai
Kona EV that shares the powertrain. (Availability of all three is being
limited to California and select other markets.) Among other
mainstream-brand EVs, the Soul edges past the Chevrolet Bolt EV's 238 miles
of range. Compare them all here. Nissan's Leaf will play close to this group
with its coming Leaf Plus model that the automaker estimates will be rated
at 226 miles of range ...

[EVDL] EVLN: Pickup e-trucks that can topple the mighty Ford

]

The mighty Ford F-150 might see a legitimate challenge in the near future,
if the veteran automaker neglects to prepare adequately for the arrival of
two all-electric pickup trucks on the market — the Tesla Truck and the
Rivian R1T.

The disruption of battery-powered pickup trucks was highlighted in a note
from Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas on Thursday. Addressing the firm’s
investors, the analyst stated that an electric pickup successfully launched
by a new player like Tesla or Rivian “could be a serious problem for the
Detroit-based traditional automakers.” With the arrival of compelling
vehicles, Jonas noted that experienced carmakers like Ford could lose the
opportunity to gain a “first mover advantage” [
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/morgan-stanley-electric-pickup-tesla-130230268.html
] in the electric pickup market.

Promising Challengers

The Wall St analyst’s points hit the nail on the head, considering that the
innate characteristics of electric vehicles such as instant torque and
generous towing capacity are factors that are vital to the pickup truck
market. The Rivian R1T, for example, is listed with a towing capacity of
11,000 pounds, though CEO RJ Scaringe noted in a recent interview that the
truck could tow far beyond its official rating. Thanks to the R1T’s four
electric motors, the truck is also able to hit 60 mph in just 3 seconds.

The Tesla Truck, on the other hand, has been mentioned several times by Elon
Musk in recent months. Last year, Musk held a Twitter brainstorming session
with his social media followers to list down features that are important for
pickup truck owners. By the end of the session, Musk noted that the Tesla
Truck would have two electric motors and dynamic suspension, a range of
400-500 miles per charge [
https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-pickup-truck-6-seats-300k-towing-capacity/
], four-wheel steering, a 240-volt connection for heavy-duty tools, and even
an air compressor to run other equipment. Musk also noted that the vehicle
could tow as much as 300,000 pounds.

Tesla’s Acid Test

Anyone skeptical of the potential disruption from an electric vehicle does
not need to look very far. Over the past year, Tesla’s Model 3 midsize sedan
all but shook the United States’ passenger car market, creeping up on
ubiquitous vehicles like the Toyota Camry and dominating in revenue
rankings. By the end of 2018, the Model 3 was the US’ best-selling luxury
vehicle, despite being a sedan in a market that prefers SUVs and pickup
trucks.

With a battery-powered pickup truck that is reasonably priced and
well-equipped with features, carmakers such as Tesla and Rivian could
challenge even the US auto industry’s biggest sellers, including the Ford
F-150. One thing that would be a hindrance to this potential disruption, of
course, would be the capability of electric car makers to scale production,
especially considering the demand for pickups in the US. In this light,
Rivian must still prove itself, since the production of the R1T is yet to
begin. Tesla, on the other hand, is already learning the art of mass
production, as shown by its growing pains with the Model 3 ramp.

A Way to Maintain the Status Quo

Despite the upcoming challenge and Wall Street’s recent warning, Ford does
have a way to maintain the status quo in the pickup truck market. Last
month, Jim Farley, Ford’s president of global markets, announced that the
F-series would be going electric. Farley later added that the decision to
adopt all-electric and hybrid power is a way to “future-proof” the company’s
most successful vehicle line.

If recent sightings are any indication, it appears that Ford is at least
testing an electric prototype of the F-150 [
https://www.teslarati.com/ford-f-150-electric-tesla-pickup-truck-rivian/
]. As noted in a recent sighting, a camouflaged electric F-150 has been
spotted charging at a station. The vehicle looked a lot like a regular
truck, save for its charging port and its higher ride height, which appeared
to be the result of batteries installed underneath the vehicle. Provided
that Ford does not show some ill-timed hubris by giving the electric F-150
mediocre specs and range, the company could very well weather the

Intimidators in type 8A31DTM. These are group 31 AGM batteries made in the
USA.

You may want to check to see if Bright Way is just some outfit that buys
nameless batteries in China and slaps their own labels on them.

How would I find out for sure?

The evdl archive shows you have asked about batteries for your 48V (6
   group 24 8V batteries).

That was the original configuration, but I went to 4 12V AGM instead.
I've lived plenty of my life with flooded batteries and I would not want
to go back to them. I especially didn't like the acid mist.

In truth I don't care that much about cycle life -- mostly about
calendar life. I have had my UB AGMs for 10 years. They are down
to maybe 25% of their original capacity, but still usable if you don't
mind charging often.

Violent Crash Nearly Rips SUV In Half In Miami Beach

It ain't Tesla's fault because it won't allow it to go that far passed
the speed limit if it were to be on self driving. Either ways, self driving
doesn't read traffic signals yet, and this was the driver who caused it.
Still a piece of shit for speeding and endangering others.

Elon Musk @elonmusk
Yes, Autopilot max speed is 5mph above speed limit off highway or 90mph
on highway
10:33 PM - Feb 15, 2019
]

Fortunately, everyone involved in this horrific crash survived.

Surveillance video obtained just yesterday from an October 21, 2018 crash
shows the moment a white Tesla ran a red light in Miami Beach and crashed
into an Infiniti SUV.

All three occupants of the SUV were seriously injured, but all survived. The
EMS is seen in the video at the right place and right time to immediately
assist.

According to police, the Tesla (Model S, we believe) was recklessly
traveling at 128 MPH two seconds before the crash. However, the car slowed
to 93 MPH at the time of impact. It appears as though Tesla’s Automatic
Emergency Braking attempts to slow the car prior to impact.

The video description adds:

'Jose Manuel Soto, 38, surrendered to authorities Jan. 25 on three
counts of reckless driving causing serious bodily injury. According to a
complaint affidavit, Soto was speeding on the MacArthur Causeway at 1:05
a.m. Oct. 21 when he ran a red light and crashed into the Infiniti as it was
legally making a U-turn on Fountain Street.'

Musk On How Autopilot Works

Autopilot was not engaged due to the fact that it doesn’t allow for this
sort of highly dangerous, high-speed driving. Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted
this to Twitter when he got word of the crash:

Had Autopilot been engaged, the crash wouldn’t have occurred.

This is simply a case of a reckless, destructive driver and the person
behind the wheel of the Tesla is fully at fault. However, it speaks volumes
for the safety of the Tesla, as both occupants were uninjured. And the
safety of the Infiniti too, as it was hit in the side. That sort of impact
at that speed is not easy to protect against.
Police Comments

Miami Beach Police spokesperson Ernesto Rodriguez stated:

“An impact so hard, it nearly cuts that SUV in half. “We’re talking
spinal fractures, collapsed lungs, one with a traumatic brain injury,”

“That’s reckless endangerment for everyone.”

“At 128 miles per hour, I don’t think anyone stood a chance.”

Interview With Victim Survivor

Down below is another video. This one features an interview with one of the
survivors who was inside the Infiniti SUV.
