[EVDL] Wanted: S10 EV -Answers to questions
Hi, To answer some of the questions that have been asked about my wanted ad for a factory built 1997-1998 Chevy S10 EV: *Question:* / "It would be helpful to evdl members to why a factory S-10 EV over a newer converted ice S-10 truck (or even a colorado ice truck)"/ *Answer:* I come from a line of GM factory workers, so a GM built EV has a special place in my heart. Plus the significant history of the vehicle, having the EV1 drive train I think is really cool. I realize that the only place to get parts for them are from the other remaining S10s out there, so that is a significant challenge that I acknowledge. *Question:* "/It would help if you gave your location and rough price you are looking to spend. Also, are you able to do your own maintenance/repairs on an EV?"/ *Answer:* Location= Indiana Price range = Based on my research of what I could find this is what I have seen them going for: 1997 bought in 2019 (with dead batteries) for $1800 https://www.thedrive.com/news/31349/forget-the-cybertruck-get-yourself-a-factory-1997-chevrolet-s-10-electric-pickup 1997 sold in 2019 (with dead batteries) for $2500: https://www.hardworkingtrucks.com/factory-original-electric-chevy-s-10-ford-ranger-up-for-sale/ 1997 bought for $2400 in June 2020: (link says $2000, but I ended getting in contact with the owner and he gave me the details): https://www.ebay.com/itm/1997-Chevrolet-Other-Pickups-/313115014078?hash=item48e71bf3be%3Ag%3Aak8AAOSwNG5e5QVH=true=2l7g6yw%252BU14EXnotBCAaXH0SbJM%253D_cvip=true=true=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557#viTabs_1 1997 sold in 2019 in working condition for $8000: https://www.diyelectriccar.com/threads/for-sale-1997-chevrolet-s10electric-8k-obo.200955/#post-1043161 So based on that I am looking for a non-working one in the 2000-3000 range or a working one in the 7500-8500 range. I do have a preference for the 1998 one because it has a passenger airbag and I believe my future passengers would appreciate the piece of mind of having one there. I am open to getting one from anywhere in the US. As far as maintenance and repairs. My previous experience has been working on electric golf carts and have built my own electric go carts from scratch. I realize this is very different than working on a EV vehicle, but I am not starting from 0. I view this as a fun learning project that has a amazing history to it. Thanks for the questions. -- Sent from: http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/ ___ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub ARCHIVE: http://www.evdl.org/archive/index.html INFO: http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org Please discuss EV drag racing at NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA)

The Dolphin is a sweet controller. Very simple to understand and program. I am selling a US Electricar Geo Prizm in great condition on eBay. I just put in new Lead Acid batteries and potentiometers. What voltage are these? I have an electric A/C compressor that I am not sure but "think" that is what it was for. I will check the cars out on Google, your link doesn't seem to work. Dach. Re: [EVDL] wanted s10 ev
I’ve got one of the 1994.5 versions of the USE S10. It didn’t have many miles on it when I got it, but as has been noted, data and parts were hard to come by and it wasn’t running. I took out the Hughes bits and replaced with a PM100 inverter and Siemens motor for the drive train. I was able to fit 100 of the CALB 100ah blue cells in the original box under the bed and used a Lithiumate Pro BMS, which has worked quite well over the last 10 years. Now the CALBs are tired and there are a couple of stinkers in the pack limiting my range from the original 80 miles or so to now no more than 25 miles if the route is mostly flat and I don’t go fast. The next update is to swap out the CALBs for 12 Tesla S modules and an Orion BMS 2. Which means I need to get the air conditioning installed for a battery chiller. The Orion will give me much better level 2 charging and also Chademo DCFC. In Oregon, the Chademo chargers are numerous very well placed, even on many of the secondary highways and faction spots, unlike the CCS combo chargers. Bottom line is that the rolling chassis is a good base platform, especially if it hasn’t been parked outside for a couple of decades. I would think that even some hotrodder who wants to put a large ICE power plant in it might pay $900 if it is in good condition. Re: [EVDL] FrankenVolt photos posted
Bob, even if your site is a bit disorganized...it is organic, and has a lot of useful and interesting info. I appreciate that you have kept it online all these years without breaking links or removing stuff just because it is 'old'. I also like that it is still in a classic web 1.0 style, meaning it is FAST and works easily on any browser. Too many sites and software applications think they need to use the latest design memes without giving a thought to the consequences. Low contrast fonts, screen space-wasting design, and endless scrolling instead of proper pagination are some of the worst of these design memes. The HTML blink tag of the late 90s also belongs in that category. The EV tie here is Tesla's firmware updates have been following some of the design memes too, (actually similar to what Microsoft has done with Windows). They had virtual UI buttons that were replaced with a flat style. They have also removed some UI features that earlier firmware had. Unfortunately there is no way to apply a custom theme to Tesla firmware (and in the case of Windows...many of the UI color customizations available in Win3.1 and Win95 are no longer possible.) [EVDL] excellent EV project cars
Speaking of a goldmine of used EV cars, consider the 400 THINKS that were imported to the USA in the 2012 time frame. They have AC motors, but once the controller goes, its hard to find a working controller. I keep hoping that an energetic EVDL hacker will figure out how to hook up an off the shelf AC motor controller to the motor and just abandon the original.. Re: [EVDL] wanted s10 ev
I unfortunately have to agree. I recently sold my 1993 Honda del Sol conversion. It was still running with all of its original ThunderSky lithium cells, but a couple of them were getting weak and needed individual charging beyond the equalizing charge and the top balancing provided by the MiniBMS system. I sold it for $1500. I was hoping for more around $3000, but didn't get much in the way of interest until I took it below $2000. Based on the responses, it looks like most of the interest was toy/project car for teenagers. I owned it for 10 years and hope the new owners can keep it running. I have my doubts, though. I provided quite a bit of documentation I wrote, but there are just things you have to know when driving a homemade conversion, and it's hard to write them all down. Mike -Original Message- From: EV On Behalf Of EVDL Administrator via EV Sent: Saturday, August 22, 2020 1:55 PM To: Electric Vehicle Discussion List Cc: EVDL Administrator Subject: Re: [EVDL] wanted s10 ev You can see a few USE S10s at evalbum.com. I have to agree with Paul. Expecting $9,000 for that truck is probably more than a little optimistic. I may be going a bit too far to the pessimistic side, but IMO given the current conversion market and its non-running condition, yours might be worth something closer to $900. Here's a '94 USE S10 offered back in 2003 for $5k - in running condition. http://mattvideo.com/electric/_disc1/002e.htm The USE S10s and Prizms can't compare to modern factory EVs, but they were actually pretty nice conversions for their time. Fifteen to 20 years ago, lots of folks who had USE vehicles really liked them. The battery costs were daunting, though. They used a big tray full of expensive AGMs. By the late 1990s, spare parts for them were already a problem. Back then we had an EVDL poster who was asking how he could re-convert his dead USE S10 using a more conventional DC motor. There used to be a Yahoo Group for USE support. I don't know what's happened to it since Yahoo tore down their groups' infrastructure, but IIRC they had quite a lot of troubleshooting information. If you could get your drive system going and upgrade the battery to lithium you'd probably have something. I don't know whether it'd be $9k worth, though. My favorite is still the Woodie Prius because I love the look of the wood. Found an interesting picture on your site that I had missed before: the Solar Impulse plane. You have so much stuff out there to look at I will have to ration viewing time or get nothing else done. That conversion wasn't done by GM. What you have there is one of the US Electricar conversions from the mid- 1990s. USE also converted Geo Prizms. I am not aware that a significant number of them made their ways to Europe. The name US Electricar can throw you off a bit as there were two unrelated companies by that name. An earlier one founded by Chandler Waterman in Athol, MA from 1979 converted Renault R5s ("Le Car" -> "Lectric Leopard"), and I think a few other cars. https://cartype.com/pages/7110/us_electricar_corporation The later US Electricar was headquartered in Santa Rosa CA and for a brief time from mid-1994 converted Chevrolet S10s and Geo Prizms using Hughes Dolphin drive systems. https://www.sfgate.com/business/article/Sputtering-U-S-Electricar-Hits-a- Cash-Wall-3040263.php You can see a few USE S10s at evalbum.com. At this point probably most folks who are interested in EV pickups will be sitting tight for the Tesla, Rivian, or possibly one of the possibly-vaporware Ford or GM E-pickups promised for later.
