[Evolution] disconnected IMAP

2001-11-14 Thread Eamonn Hamilton

Hi Folks.

I've a couple of questions regarding IMAP operation with RC1 of
evolution as provided in Debian unstable. Is it possible to start
evolution in disconnected mode and browse the messages you downloaded in
the last session before going online later? I'm running a laptop, so I
sometimes want to browse my mail without having been connected in the
evo session.

Also, is it possible to view the calendar folder offered by Exchange via
IMAP as a calendar? At the moment it all appears as a series of
messages, as do tasks etcetc. Is it possible to assign custom views to
these folders which would allow correct interpretation of the contents?

 Here's hoping :-)

Cheers,
Eamonn

That would be nice wouldn't it. I think maybe a command-line option
evolution --disconnected or something similar to start offline would
be good.

That would be so nice, especially if Evolution could use IMAP folders
for calendar/tasks without requiring an Exchange server.

If I were you I'd file wish list bugs for both of these at

Re: [Evolution] Return receipts

2001-11-14 Thread Nigel Metheringham

The discussion on this thread has already shown one form of
return-receipt I have never seen before, and passingly gone past the 2
other versions I do know about

To take these in turn:-

  1. Return-Receipt-To: addr
Sends a receipt to the address specified. Great for using
on mail to large mailing lists with a 3rd (disliked) party
address in the header. Implemented in old sendmail's
and maybe even in old RFCs.
Implementation of return function is in MTA on final delivery
Very strongly deprecated nowadays - and finding MTAs that
support it is now pretty hard.

  2. DSNs
There are RFCs for these (several I think).
Complex, return function can be either MTA or MUA,
also used in some cases for bounces.
Generally the best but most complex to implement.
Need options to allow/disallow/ask about replying.

  3. X-Return-Receipt-Requested: true
Microsoft's answer. Has same privacy implications as
others, but at least avoids some of the 3rd party problem
 of the original Return-Receipt-To:

Dan makes some really good points about implementation issues.

Nigel.

   * should I change the criterion from Mailing list is to something

I don't work on Evolution so this is just an educated guess, but it
seems that the Mailing list is criteria works by looking for a
List-Id header which does not seems to always be inserted by mailing
list software such as mailman, majordomo et al.
This is a bug, I'd imagine, but a bug in the mailing-list software I
suppose - after all it isn't Evolution's fault if the header wasn't
inserted (though it would be cunning if it noticed that all emails that
have a specific List-Id description also always has the one common
recipient in it (the email address of the mailing list) and store that
information away for the next time so that Evolution could then ensure
that future emails to the mailing list are filtered appropriately.

I would like to see some coordination between Evolution and Mozilla so
that their calendar data is compatible. Not import/export, but direct
access from the applications, just like IMAP clients. I like having
both Evolution and Mozilla available for IMAP access; it would be great
if this held for calendar data as well.

It would also provide a smooth migration path to Linux for Outlook users:

   Outlook/Win - Moz/Win - Moz/Linux - Evo/Linux

Or you could just make Evo cross-platform :-)

When you get problem with import you can take the Netscape files like
Inbox an cat them in evolution/local/directory/mbox.
The Netscape files are also only mbox files.

[Evolution] POP mail: read messages not retrieved

2001-11-14 Thread Richard Bellavance

Hi,

I installed the latest snapshot this morning (20031947), and noticed
a rather fundamental change in the behaviour of the POP mail retrieval.

Namely, read messages are not fetched at all anymore. Until now, Evo
would correctly distinguish messages it had already fetched and messages
that had been read by other means on the server (be it another POP
client somewhere else, or a command-line mailer on the server). It
would not fetch the former again, but would fetch the latter.

This is really annoying (to put it mildly) for people who use POP from
multiple machines and for whom IMAP is not possible.

Any chance of getting this bug squashed, or was this an intentional
chance ?

Richard.

[Evolution] simple filter import/export idea

2001-11-14 Thread Ken Guest

Hi all,
Thought I'd pipe in and firstly mention that my charsets problem that I
reported way back on the 5th is gone now that I 'evolved' up to the
11.06.15.04 snapshot. Thanks guys!
I'd like to mention the one cool thing that I'd like to see in Evolution
sometime, nothing urgent, just a 'wouldn't it be cool if' feature:

It'd be nice to be able to import filters (from at least other
Evolution users, maybe even from Mozilla Outlook files too).
This would let people exchange spam-filters, and any other
filter for that matter.
(I know that procmail et al could/should be used for catching
such things, but when you're connecting into an Exchange server
then that just isn't possible)

FWIW, it's pretty straightforward to just cut and past XML from the

Obviously, this is less sophisticated than your suggestion, but for most

I do know all about the filters being saved as XML and that the can be
copied and pasted with a text editor, but you have to understand that
most users, I'd imagine, would much prefer to be insulated from having
to do such a thing, besides which not having to edit the filters.xml

Knowing that some of the original developers of gnomecal also work on
evolution, and since evolution is an _integrated_ email/calendar/etc.,

Am I missing something really obvious?

Re: [Evolution] POP mail: read messages not retrieved

2001-11-14 Thread Jeffrey Stedfast

The POP checking code never changed to not download read messages, in
fact this concept doesn't even exist in the POP protocol.

Evolution still does the same thing as it always has, it will only
download messages that it has not yet downloaded before.

My best guess is that your other client is deleting the messages off the
server.

Any chance of getting this bug squashed, or was this an intentional
 chance ?

 Richard.

Re: [Evolution] Configuration Database not found

2001-11-14 Thread Duane C. Mallory

Gil,

There must be more than one bug report on this - the number you gave
does have some stuff on it, but others have stated they added comments
to this bug report that fixed their problem, but I don't see the
comments.

Your description of what causes this failure and what causes my failure
are, from what I can see, different.

In my case, this is the scenario:

1) log in to ximian desktop.
2) start evolution (doesn't matter how) - get error message
3) run 'oaf-slay'
4) from this point on evolution runs fine - I can exit evolution,
restart evolution, no problem.
5) exit ximian desktop
6) back to step 1.

For some reason, logging out from ximian desktop and back in initiates
the entire problem.

Best Regards,

DCM

[Evolution] Format quer

  Hey,

Though my addressbook issue doesn't appear to have been addressed, I
want to ask about mail format.

I can't find any way to turn html completely off, as I could in other
gui readers. I like the feature to not download pics from Web pages,
but why no option to just shut down html?

At the very least, as I'm rather light sensitive, it would be nice to
be able to override the html colour scemes that I could turn the
backgournd fonts to colours of my choice (ie colours which don't
hurt). For that matter, the only colour change I can find is for the
colour of quoted fonts. I know that gtk/evolution themes are supported,
but I've yet to find one of those which works ~~ has a scheme my eyes
can deal with easily for RH 7.2, Ximian -- current version, evo
0.99.1, etc.

Any chance such colour control html shut off fewtures might be
considered?

The nice thing about a regexp is that it can be as simple as ^ (for
those that just want something simple), or as complex as
^(([ ]|[A-Z])*[|:}#])+ for those that want something more capable.

This should be selectable then - Bob Smith isn't going to understand /^/
inserts a at the beginning of a line.

Perhaps the dialog should have two checkable options, one for straight
text insertion, and one for regex quoting.

Obviously, v1.1 :)

[Evolution] dumb question about mail delivery types (take 2)

2001-11-14 Thread Dan Berger

I sent this several days ago and didn't get a response - so since I
haven't figured it out on my own, I figured I'd send it again, in the
hopes that someone might throw me a bone...

So - currently I use fetchmail and procmail to fetch my mail from
several POP servers and deliver directly to
~/evolution/local/Inbox/mbox - works great - and allows me to use both
evo and mutt to read my mail without too many hoops to jump through.

The only downsides are (a) to see new messages in Evo I have to
expunge my inbox (i.e. evo can't autocheck every n minutes) and (b) I
can't use filters.

I spent a bit of time this morning experimenting with the various mail
delivery options in Evo in an effort to get filters working - and I'm
now pretty confused.

There are 6 options - 4 if you exclude POP and IMAP:

Standard Unix mbox spools
Maildir-format mail directories
Local Delivery
None

I'm unclear on a few things:

1. what's the difference between Standard Unix mbox spools and
local delivery? The former says it's for reading and storing
local mail in standard mbox spool files and the latter says for
retrieving local mail from standard mbox formatted spools. Does
that mean that standard unix mbox spools doesn't move mail
between the selected spool and your inbox?

2. maildir-format mail directories says it's for storing local mail
in maildir directories - does that mean it does or doesn't move
things from the folder specified into your inbox?

3. Why does the apply filters to messages in INBOX option vanish
from Receiving Options when you select local delivery?

I tried a couple things without success:

1. changing procmail to deliver to /var/spool/mail/dberger in mbox
format and changing one of my evo accounts to local delivery. I
sent (and received) a test message to myself and tried to get evo
to snatch it via Send/Receive - the message was never found.

2. changing procmail to deliver to ~/Mail/INBOX in Maildir format and
selecting maildir format directories - with the directory pointed
at ~/Mail/Inbox. Again, send and receive a test message - but evo
never picked it up and moved it to my inbox when I did
   Send/Receive.

Anyone have any ideas, or clarification on how the various mail
delivery options are supposed to work?

Yes, that is correct behavior - you can change the smtp server you use,
it is just a good default to auto-set...don't you think?

I would think that since you are creating a new account (which may or

NONE, and allow the user to enter their own preference, whether it be
the SMTP server from the default account, or something else.

Just my opinion though. It works the way it is now. :)

But pretend you are setting up evolution to check mail from your work
address and your isp mail address, you'd want both accounts to use your
isp's smtp server
and if your isp mail address was your default (as it would be if you
were setting up your home box), then when you created your work account
you'd want it to default to use your isp's smtp server so you wouldn't
have to type in the same info all over again.

see the logic?

While I'm at work using IMAP, inside my IMAP tree, it still defaults to

check the IMAP account as default while IMAP is enabled.

So what's my problem? I guess I'd like someday to not have to
enable/disable accounts every time I go to work and come home. It would
be nice if Evolution could turn the Send / Receive button into a drop
down button where I can choose the individual account to Send / Receive

Mozilla does). If this feature along with defaulting to the right email

perfect ;0)

This is my wish list anyway. Thanks for listening.

[Evolution] Recognizing Arbitrary Message Quotations (was Re: [Evolution]Changing Quotation String?)

2001-11-14 Thread Jim Meyer

Howdy!

It appears that an poorly worded query on my part spawned an interesting
topic: how can we recognize arbitrarily quoted messages for purposes of
colorization, requoting, and rewrapping?

It feels like a potentially worthwhile approach is to spend some time
trying to recognize attribution strings; if we could learn to do that,
we can infer that the next line is quoted somehow, and start to unravel
which quoting strings relate to which attributions.

Ideally, we could completely unroll any number of arbitrarily quoted
messages, which would allow us to then requote or rewrap tidily.

However, this is no more easy than the first problem, and perhaps
considerably harder. I'm thinking about this a bit in my spare moments,
but to paraphrase ESR, many eyes make light work. ;]

Cheers!

evolution: relocation error: /usr/lib/libevolution-importer.so.0: undefined
symbol: stat

when I try and start it from the consol (nothing when I start it from the
menu).

Same happens with either root or user login.

Any ideas.

Peter.

How late is latest? That's been fixed for at least 30 hours. At the very
least you should have 2001.11.14.08.58.

It's a side point - I agree with the behaviour of 'guessing' an SMTP
server; but I do use different SMTP servers at home and work. My ISP's
mail server only relays for hosts inside their network, which my work
machine isn't, and my work SMTP server does the same.

Is this my problem or are there still problems linking in the libraries?

I still get this too (not surprising, since the problem comes from
either gnome-pilot or pilot-link, and no new Ximian release of those
have been made available :-)

you'd want it to default to use your isp's smtp server so you wouldn't
have to type in the same info all over again.

Ahh, you've struck another bit of fun I've been having. Neither my
office or my ISP will allow relaying from outside their internal
networks; however, both will allow relaying regardless of claimed source
address from within their internal networks.

This leaves me wishing I could just toggle the outgoing SMTP server for
all accounts at once. No mail client has adequately answered this
problem yet, in my experience.

Cheers!

[Evolution] moving folders doesnt always work

2001-11-14 Thread Stefan Palme

hi,

I have a problem with the folder list of the mailer component.
when I want to move one of my local folders (subfolders of Inbox)
into another one, this does not work for all folders. While moving
the mouse over the desired destination folder, normally this folder
gets a black border around it, and I can drop my folder into it.
Now (using evolution 0.99.0) the black box does not appear
over all the folders (and of course not over the folder I need ;-)).
I've already made a list of folders where it works and where not,
but I can not work out any rule, for which folders this happens.

best regards
-Stefan Palme-

Re: [Evolution] How do I enable spellchecking in Evolution?

2001-11-14 Thread Damon Brodie

I could be mistaken, but I thought I had to add the gnome-spell rpm to
make Evo spell-checking work. (which in turn uses Aspell)

Then spell-checking is not working for you. Misspelled words should be underlined. I can't get my spell-checking either. I have Mandrake 8.1 also. Funny thing is that I have Mandrake 8.1 on my work machine, and spell-checking is working there.

Thanks for all the replies!

I had gnome-spell installed, but it was an earlier version (0.1-7) that
came with my distro (Mandrake 8.1). Updating to the ximian version
(0.4) fixed the problem, now spiel-cheking works fine! Well, it appears
to work anyway, and gives me a false sense of security. (It thinks
there are no misspelled word found in this message. Hmm, I've never
seen the word glbrftpswq in a dictionary before ;o/ ).
