[Evolution] Xinerama

2001-11-19 Thread Geoff Beaumont

I've had a dig to see if this has come up before - I can't find a bug,
just an inconclusive thread on this list last month.

I'm running Evo 0.99.2 on Debian Woody, XFree86 4.1.0.1, Matrox G450
with standard XFree86 driver, Xinerama mode over two monitors,
Enlightenment 0.16.

With X running on a single monitor, Evolution is extremely well behaved
(congratulations ;c) - when I switch to Xinerama, it hangs after a few
minutes use. There doesn't seem to be a consistent delay or trigger, but
it is 100% repeatable. Once it's hung, it won't restart until I've
restarted X (I assume there's something that I could kill to fix it, but
I haven't found it). If I run it from the console, no error messages are
displayed.

I've got hardware acceleration disabled in Single screen mode at the
moment, so dual monitor/Xinerama is the only_ changing variable here.

Before I log a bug, I'd like to provide something a bit less vague. How
can I trace the source of this problem?

Interesting

I run RedHat 7.1 (updated via RedCarpet) with a Matrox G450 (Aug 22
Matrox drivers); X 4.0.3-5; Gnome 1.4.0; E 0.16.4-7; and Evolution
0.99.2-ximian.3 .. all in xinerama.

Mine seems stable. Whether the problem is an X issue, or a Woody issue,
I don't know - however it's not an xinerama issue per-sae..

Do you want any further info from my system, to try to eliminate common
elements?

Nice! ;c)

Duron 750MHz, 256Mb RAM. IDE disk.

2.4.12 Kernel, also home brewed. Just installed a stock DW 2.4.13 kernel
- no change, so I guess we can rule that out. I'll roll a new one when I
get time.

> X 4.0.3 (no DRI);
4.1.0-9 from Debian Woody. Currently no DRI 'cause I forgot to compile
it into the last kernel...but the G450 won't use it in dual head mode
anyway. I'm not going to try downgrading this - I never managed to get
DRI working on 4.0.2

1.4.1.1 (DW) - that looks like a possible candidate. Just rolled it back
to gnome-libs-data 1.2.13-ximian.11. Subjectively, may have made it
worse - in any case it's made gdm decidedly wobbly (although it
satisfies its dependencies..) so back to the DW version.

All same.

Evo 0.99.2-ximian.2

This appears to be the latest version packaged for Debian.

> Mail is accessed via IMAP.
Ditto - from both local network and a remote (and at times slow) server.
Just run an upgrade which installed quite a few Gnome libraries from
Debian Woody, haven't time to test it properly today, but it's already
crashed once in Xinerama, is running very nicely on a single screen, so
apparently no change.

I noticed on the Ximian FTP server the Debian Woody Ximian Gnome
directory doesn't contain Evo, only the Potato one, so I guess they're
only building it for that at the moment (which is fair enough - Woody's
a bit of a moving target. Leave that to the Debian package maintainer.)

Sure enough, my apt-sources file lists a stable archive - there doesn't
appear to be a copy of the Woody debs set up as a Debian archive.

I guess I'm just going to have to live with it for the time being -
dillema: Evo or Xinerama...

Now that says a lot about how good Evo is - there aren't many things I'd
give up the second monitor for...

Cheers.

2001-11-21 Thread Dave Euser

You could always just run 2 seperate screensnot quite as nice, but
Xinerama doesn't just crash evo for me - my whole box dies (no time to
figure it out).this way I've got evo/galeon on the larger monitor,
and the secondary is a couple xterms, gkrellm, gnomeicu, etc.

Just upgraded to 7.2 (which has a 2.4.7 Kernel). Not built a new 2.4.15
version yet (need to have the ext3 stuff, hence no 2.4.13..)

Evolution seems pretty good so far (1hr+)

Have you tried the mgapdesk util (from matrox - needs the latest mga
drivers too), and tried the 'Merged' mode?

It's non-xinerama, but uses the mga-hal drivers to give you a single
display, spread across two monitors...

(ie instead of two 1280x1024, you get one 2560x1024 - its xinerama, but
it's not :)

Meant to send the last mail to the list (sorry Ian, forgot Evo list doesn't
change
reply-to to itself).

I'm guessing a relatively low level Gnome library - but only because while Evo
seemed to be the only thing affected, after it had hung nothing short of
restarting X would get it to work (that I could find anyway).
