Yeah. This would take care of the ambiguities I was mentioning in the
thread "From field with replies" from last Friday. John

If voting counts, add me. It's the only thing I really miss from mutt.

This feature has been requested on the list before, but I'm not sure if
there's a request in bugzilla. Maybe one of the Ximian people can chime
in. If it's not there, it's worth adding, because I think it would be
nice as well.

Thanks for all the replies. I get the point about no wishlists for 1.0.
If it's not on bugzilla I'll look into adding it to the database.

I've realised it could be even better: why not per-folder default To (or
CC) addresses as well. For example, if you click on the "evolution"
folder and then click "New Message" your correct "From" address would be
filled out and the correct "To" mailing list address as well!

This could also be useful for non-mailing list corresponence (e.g. say
you (automatically) file Bob's emails in the folder "Bob". If you
clicked on that folder then any "New Message" would be sent to Bob).

Thanks for the info Rich that this was a feature in Mutt.

Adam

This is actually in KMail. KMail has a concept called "identities" and
you can associate a default identity with a folder. You can also
associate a default posting address with each folder, so you can, for
example, right click a folder and post to the default list for that
address. It works fairly well.

Perhaps a simple way to do this is Filters on outgoing mail.

Mostly power users would want this, and the ability to munge headers
might be handy for a number of reasons.

I am thinking of a filter like this:

If (TO:|CC:) ~= [EMAIL PROTECTED]/ then set FROM: =
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

This is not quite the same thing (when a mailing list changes host
names, it might fubar this).

This might actually be easier then a per list identity. It might also
slow outbound messages.

It does leave a few places to completely fubar your mail :)

I like it. I use Evo both at home and at work and I'd love it if
replies to messages in my "home" inbox came from my home address while I
was at work and vice-versa at home.

That could get confusing, because you have no indication at the time
you're writing the message that the From will be changed. And what if
you want to send from a non-default address for some reason? And what if
you cc: two lists with different rules?

I like the "default identities" idea though. There was talk about it
once, but I don't think it's in bugzilla.

Oh its less than perfect :) But it is a "power user" patch. I suppose
for the power user wannabees you could have a warning or selection
dialog :) You could even have an indicator on the "TO:" field that let
people turn on and off the filter.

The mailbox identities is a better idea for the most part, but it too
has its issues. I mentioned the outbound filter model as a possible
solution that might be quicker (if it was possible to copy over the
filtering rules and mugne the headers already). And if you leave it in
"power user mode" you do not need a fancy UI ;)
