Just as I was about to pipe in and say i've got the same problem, i ran
Red Carpet and there's a new gnome-spell that seems to fix this... At
least it did for me and i was seeing exactly the same behaviour as
Scott. I'm running RH7.3 and ximian gnome desktop.
After installing this new gnome-spell, it still didn't work for me until
i enabled a default spell check language. After I did that, everything
seems to be working beautifully! Great job u ximians!

This time it did not crash but I have no language to select for spell
