Legitimate question, I think. The thing is, once you start to loosen up
on netiquette and common curtosy, things get ugly very quickly. If
you've spent a little time on IRC recently, for example, you'll agree
that the number of dyslexics there are striking. In some networks, on
some channels, more than 80% have dyslexia these days, it seems. They
don't, of course. They just say they do, because if they say that,
people nod understandingly and stop complaining about their terrible
language. And the lazy kids see that, and think: "hey, who on IRC can
prove I _don't_ have dyslexia?". I hope my point is becoming obvious:
there is nothing more contagious than a bad habit.

If we stop caring about netiquette because people use bad MUAs, then
that's an excuse. "My client can't do it" turns into "It's a lot of work
in my client", then "I don't know how in my client" and then, "Who
cares". And if the users doesn't care, why should the developers? This
is not a good situation. The norm is easily contaminated on the
internet.

I'm sorry you have a bad client, and I'm saddened to hear that your
employer forces you to use bad tools in your work. I don't think the
rest of the world should help covering up their mistakes, though. Web
designers have been doing that for years, with that browser from that
company, and what is the result? New webdesigners are educated to write
poor quality markup in order to conform to the contaminated norm.

Sincerely,

Jo-Erlend Schinstad

John,

If your Email is at another ISP, you can retrieve with pop from
anywhere, but some ISP's don't allow Relaying, and therefore sometimes
block smtp to another ISP. You will have to use the SMTP server from
your active ISP. Or another option is using a google account to send
email. This way you can always send through the google smtp servers.
or have your emails for your domain hosted by a hosting company as
godaddy, domaindiscover

Don't know if I'm clear with my explanation.

Regards,
M.Kojak.S

I'm trying to set my evolution config so that my 'face' is available on
outgoing e-mail - automagically. I've read various "readme's" - but
things seem to work differently to what is said.

I'm running evolution version... "GNOME evolution 2.26.3".

in ~/.evolution, I created my base64 png image -

djpeg my-picture.jpg | ppmnorm | pnmscale -width 48 -height 48 |
ppmquant 7 | pnmtopng | base64 > ~/.evolution/faces

The result is 920 bytes - small enough.

One can "Insert --> Face" - but nothing happens. If you don't set up
'~/.evolution/faces' - then you're prompted for an image. That works -
e-mail by e-mail.

If the 'faces' file is created - "Insert --> Face" does no prompting -
or anything else.

How do I attach a face automatically?

Someone said look in Edit-->Preferences-->Mail Preferences--> Headers -
but that looks to just be for pictures in my own address book.

Maybe port 587 is blocked by the firewall on your client machine.

Phil & Kojak.t,
Using plain, TSL & SSL encryption, messages are received but no mail
is sent, the window just sits there. Authentication is checked or not
the results are the same. If I change the outgoing server from
mail.XXX.com to smtp.mail.XXX.com it attempts to send the mail but
has the following error message "Host lookup failed:
smtp.mail.XXX.com: Name or service not known" and is the only error
message I can get otherwise it sits there regardless of how long I
wait (several minutes).

Thanks,

John

With Verizon it is also SSL, password is "plain", and make sure Evo is set up

Please run Evo from a terminal as follows:

env CAMEL_DEBUG=all evolution >& evo.log

Then try to send an email; it should fail. Quit Evo, so that the log
will not get larger, and now look at the log. The error should be there.

Adam,
I have tried all of those variations including mail.XXX.com:587,
smtp.XXX.com:587 and restarting the machine between changes,
unfortunately they have not worked. Originally mail.XXX.com worked
for years before Verizon made the changes Monday. My email server is

that mail.XXX.com is the proper syntax and if the email client needs

On the windows side Eudora 7 and outlook express made the conversion
fine but if tried thunderbird and it exhibits the same problem.

That makes sense; there probably is no "smtp.mail.XXX.com"; have you
tried just "smtp.XXX.com"? Or looking up what the setting should be.
The port syntax XXX.YYY.ZZZ:### does work. Our shop runs SMTP on
TCP/21212 and specifying smtp.USUSUS.com:21212 works in evolution.

Yeah, it seems that there is no such option for GPG in

There is such option for SMIME only. I wouldn't expect it anywhere else.
