Hi,
you are right, it's confusing. If you read my post carefully, then
you'll realize I said to use GOA only for Contacts. Basically because
that old version doesn't have implemented internal OAuth2 for Google,
thus there is no other option for Bart.

The internal Google OAuth2 was added for 3.20.0.

It'll take some time, a) 3.22.x is for Fedora 25, b) specifically the
3.22.5 release is planned for Monday, February 13th, 2017.

I guess you meant 3.20.6. That's true, I plan to release it by the end
of this month, +/-. There will precede a little mail to this mailing
list from me. Stay tuned.

There was built a test package for Fedora 24, but that's already gone
from koji (fedora build server), because test builds do not last for
long. It wasn't meant to be in testing repository (like available with
`dnf update`), because I wanted longer testing of those changes.

No, there's no 3.22.5 yet.  Fedora 25 has 3.22.1, the latest in Fedora
24 is 3.20.5.

3.22.2 was released on 7th Nov but isn't yet in Fedora.

Right, and I always have problems with Google Calendars in Evo 3.20.5
with Fedora 24.
I read once that 3.22.5 should be somewhere in the Fedora Test
Repositories, but I never found them

The OP is using an ancient version of Evolution (3.12.x) which does not
have native OAuth2, hence contacts doesn't work. The advice for that
version of Evolution (and up to 3.16.x I believe) was to provision
accounts using GOA.

This is exactly why we always keep going on at people to tell us the
version of Evolution they are using - things change between versions,
sometimes there are significant changes, sometimes not, but unless you
take note of the version being used it's very easy to lead people
astray.

Actually, TBH, neither was there any advice in later versions to not
use GOA because of whatever calendar problems.  It is recommended that
you use native Evolution methods wherever possible as Evolution has
more control over them - but it is actually the Evolution
implementation of Google calendar accounts that was having problems,
not the GOA one.

Use GOA for Contacts, not Calendar.
Use Evolution [native] for Calendar.

That would be my interpretation [but I don't use Google, so...]

In the previous message: """You can even enable only Contacts part in

it looks like you didn't try to search the archives with the above URL,
neither GNOME's bugzilla, because otherwise you'd know the answer. You
may even get pretty good answers with "Gmail contacts", eventually
"Google contacts" in this list archive. It's a pita to repeat it again
and again...

...and again: Use GNOME Online Accounts (GOA), that provides OAuth2.
You can even enable only Contacts part in GOA, and use the rest from
within the evolution. As you do not use GNOME, just run/install
gnome-control-center from where you can access Online Accounts.

Milan:

Here you say use GOA, but in other posts the recommendation is to NOT
use GOA for Gmail due to the calendar issues that occur every day
around 5pm Eastern time.

So which is it? Use GOA or not us GOA?

[Evolution] syncing Gmail contacts

2016-11-23 Thread Bart Vliegen
I am using Evolution 3.12.9 on Debian Jessie. I have set up Gmail using
Evolution, not Gnome Online Accounts (I am using the XFCE desktop).

Mail and calendar work fine, but I can't sync my Google contacts. I get
a message saying Evolution can't open this address book, because of an
invalid URI or unavailable server, resource not found,
https://developers.google.com/accounts/docs/AuthForInstalledApps (this
is my translation of the Dutch message).

When I go to this google url, it says:
Important: ClientLogin has been officially deprecated since April 20,
2012 and is now no longer available. Requests to ClientLogin will fail
with a HTTP 404 response. We encourage you to migrate to OAuth 2.0 as
soon as possible.

I assume that this issue was fixed in later versions of Evolution. When
I was using Evo 3.22.x on Debian Stretch (testing version) I could sync
my Gmail contacts in Evolution.

Since Evolution is not in Debian backports, does this mean that I can't
sync my Gmail contacts while I am using the current stable Debian
release Jessie without installing a newer version of Evolution from
outside the official Debian repositories?

Regards,
Bart
