I don't know which kind of 'suggestions' you're looking for, as you
already correctly summarized the situation yourself. :)
Whatever upgrade paths Debian offers, the Debian community knows best.

I think there's no easy solution to this problem, since EVO is tightly
coupled with Gnome. Luckily 3.12.9 is a good piece of software, and it
works fine in my office box.
