I used to do that, but I then found that I rarely looked at them, and
when I did, there were far too many emails to read. A daily summary
straight into the inbox is a nice way to keep abreast of what's going
on.

(I don't use digest for this list, and I don't have a strong opinion
about disabling them, I just thought it worth pointing out that what
works for one person doesn't necessarily work for everyone).

Incidentally, Gmail have announced that they will start using DMARC in
the future, but they have taken a much more grown-up approach, and
appear to be waiting for new standards to be developed (ARC) that will
allow lists to continue as they were.

List messages have traditionally kept the sender's email address, so
that you can see who sent the message and reply directly to them if you
want.

Well, they are marked clearly as being from a list, but Yahoo's DMARC
policy prevents anyone sending emails "on behalf of", which is
effectively what a list is. The only exception is when the original
message is not altered, but it has to be to add subject prefix, footer
etc.

Yahoo and AOL are about the only major email providers that use DMARC.
It was quite controversial when they turned it on, especially with no
notice. For example:

It's a nightmare, as the DMARC record on Yahoo email addresses can
cause any other member's email address to bounce (and be removed).

The DMARC record tells receivers to reject the email if not received
directly from Yahoo. So some...@yahoo.com sends an email to the list,
the list forwards to ot...@outlook.com, ot...@outlook.com rejects as
it's not directly from yahoo.com. ot...@outlook.com then clocks up a
bounce failure within the list software.

The only solution is for the list software to be altered to rewrite the
from address of DMARC domains, or for people with DMARC domains (e.g.
@yahoo.co.uk) to use a different email address to send to the list
(e.g. Gmail)

As someone has already said, DMARC was never envisaged for this sort of
use (instead it's for @paypal.com etc), but it looks like it's here to
stay (or at least until if/when ARC is implemented for email
forwarding).

[Evolution] Removing the send email keyboard shortcut

2014-12-31 Thread Andrew Beverley
Hi guys,

Is there a way to disable the Ctrl-Enter keyboard shortcut in Evolution,
and/or change it to something else?

I've tried redefining it using these instructions, but that doesn't seem
to work, presumably because I'm not using Gnome2:

https://mail.gnome.org/archives/evolution-list/2009-March/msg00254.html

I'm using Ubuntu 14.04, but with Evolution version 3.12.2

Thanks,

Andy

[Evolution] Specifying the font typeface

2014-06-04 Thread Andrew Beverley
I assume that it's not possible, but just want to check anyway: can the
typeface be specified when composing an HTML email in Evolution?

I know it's better not to do so, but that's difficult to sell to an
end-user when it can be done in other MUAs.

Thanks,

Andy

If it helps, I'm about to write up instructions on how to compile it
yourself on Ubuntu.

Okay, thanks, all makes sense, I'll run with that.

Sure, if someone needs to install Evo on their distro, then they use the
distro's instructions.

This is all about making it as easy as possible for someone to
contribute to the source project. Look at the efforts LibreOffice have
gone to in order to make contributing as easy as possible, and look at
the results.

As I said, I've been keen to contribute to the project in the past, but
until today have run into problems, and I even thought that I had to
compile Gnome from scratch to get the correct dependencies, before I
could even think about compiling Evolution.

If there was a nice and easy "here's how to get started with the source
code", with some examples applicable to people's actual environment,
then I expect more people would contribute to it.

Thanks,

Andy

I can try and keep it as general as possible, although that might end up
just being "./configure && make && make install".

Given that people are generally (?) going to be building it on an
rpm-based or deb-based distribution, you could probably cover most
scenarios with just 2 sets of instructions.

Over the years I have always wanted to contribute to Evolution, but
until now I haven't because:

1. I've been conscious that the package I am using in whatever distro is
always a few versions behind, so any bug reports etc may not be
relevant.

2. Any attempts at a "quick" build from source have always failed for
me. It is only today that I have spent some time on it that I have
succeeded. I'd like to share that information with the community: given
that most people in my situation would start at the wiki, that seems a
good place to put it.

> And not "installation" instructions - installation on Fedora means "yum
> install evolution" (I'm sure there's an equivalent on Ubuntu).

Okay, how about:

1. Using https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution/Installation

2. Adding the link to the page under "get the source code" section of
the main page

3. Making it clear (as per last email) that the first port of call
should be the distro's package repository.

Sorry, I actually meant "building from source" ;-)

Maybe that would be a better title, although whenever I go to a
project's documentation I expect there to be /something/ about
installation.

[Evolution] Installation page for the Evolution wiki

2014-05-13 Thread Andrew Beverley
Dear all,

I'd like to add an "installation" page to the Evolution wiki. Before I
do so, I wanted to check that I hadn't missed an existing one?

At this stage I only intend to add instructions on how to install
Evolution from source in Ubuntu, but of course more could follow.

If I hear nothing back, then I'll create a new page on the wiki at the
URL https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution/Installation

Thanks,

Andy
