[Evolution] Replies not including all text

2021-01-24 Thread Daffy Duck via evolution-list
Hello,

Using Fedora 34 with evolution-3.38.3-1.fc33.x86_64

I have been having issues recently where when I hit reply to an email,
or I hit reply to a sent email to do a follow up/addition, it does not
include all of my quoted text.  It only includes part of it.

Is there a way to fix this?

Thank you,

Was some of the text selected? (it would only include the selection)
Did the email contain the signature marker (a line containing just the
string "-- ") ? evolution will trim the signature text.

None of it is selected.  I had thought about that.

I do have a signature marker, but I've always had that, and it goes
beyond that, but not much beyond that.

For instance, I just went to a mail I sent, hit reply to, and it only
included my signature at the top and the quoted first line of the last
email.

I've not had this problem previously.

Fedora 34 is not released yet.   It has not even reached Beta status.
I am using Fedora 33 withe Evolution 3.38.3 (3.38.3-1.fc33) without
the same issue.   It sounds like you are encountering an issue with an
early development version of Fedora 34.  You might need to check in the
dev groups there as you may have encountered a bug with the changes
being implemented.

F34 is unreleased software (and presumably when it is released the
Evolution version will have bumped to 3.40 along with Gnome). The
currently supported versions are F32 and F33. I don't see the issue you
mention on F33.

Hi,
would it be possible to share a test case, please? If you can generate
one, rather than share a mail with private information. Eventually, you
can send it only to me, just reference this thread somehow, thus I do
not overlook it in my spam folder. Ideally send it as an attachment.

By the way, one thing is newly added signature and one is a signature
in the original message. If you've "Keep signature above the original
message" option set, then the signature you see n the reply message is
the one Evolution added for you.

Maybe, before sending the test message, you can try to run this from a
terminal:

   $ gsettings set org.gnome.evolution.mail composer-reply-keep-signature true

and then re-try the reply. If it'll work, then it was about the
signature delimiter and you do not need to send a test message.
Bye,
Milan

All, I made a mistake.  I'm using 33.

The name of the RPM says that, as well.

"Using Fedora 34 with evolution-3.38.3-1.fc33.x86_64"

Please disregard the reference to 34.

Ok, I seem to be having this problem again and this setting change
doesn't fix it.

I go to an email sent to me on one account, hit reply, and it cuts off
like half of it.

In this case, it's cutting off the entire quoted portion that has a |
in front of it.

Hi,
first of all, no need to resend the same message twice.

The second, you are better with Reply To List (Ctrl+L) here, at least
in my case.

The third, was there anything selected when you've been doing the
reply? It's a feature to include only the selected portion of the text
in the reply, when any such exists. Otherwise, I've no idea, unless
I've a test message to try to reproduce it here, but, apart of the
signature cutting and selection use, I'm not aware of any other reason
to have the text cut.
Bye,
Milan

It seems to mainly be happening with one particular account, and I
can't share messages from there here because of the sensitive content.

What seems to happen is it cuts off my quoted portion from before.

So, when a person replies to me, they include my quoted text.  When I
hit reply, it includes their quoted text, and the first part of my
quoted text in that it only has my name, pretty much, and it cuts off
the rest of it.

I'm not sure what to do.

Hi,

Better way to explain.  When I have a new email, it shows the new text,
and below that, indented with, in my case, a blue line in front, the
previous text that I had sent.

All that, and all before that, is no longer included when I hit reply.

I've had the same problem occasionally as Daffy too, with too much
cutting. Will have to check if there's a common trait to those mail.

In the meantime, the Reply to list-button seems to fix some list mails, so

Hi,
use Reply to List here (Ctrl+L) and try to avoid top posting, please.

It seems to work properly with the message you replied to yourself.
Check the differences, or save the message as mbox (it's in the context
menu) and then edit it in a text editor and remove anything sensitive
there, by replacing the texts with 'x' or anything like that. As it
seems you have HTML mails, the text is there twice, once within the
plain text part and once as HTML. Feel free to send me the test message
privately (ideally attached), only mention this thread, thus I won't
overlook it in my spam folder.

I suppose there is your signature, also because I currently do not see
any other reason why the text should be gone, but it's removed only if
the signature stripping is enabled in the preferences, which you said
it's not. Anyway, I'm afraid I cannot help without the data/reproducer.
Bye,
Milan

So this seems to be specific to a certain account, but it's an
important account, within evolution.

I have tried toggling different options in composer preferences, and
nothing seems to fix it.  For instance, one email in particular I have
right now, if I hit reply, it includes the quoted text that the sender
sent to me, then:

And nothing below that.  In other words, it includes only the sender's
response and the fact that I wrote something that they responded to,
but not what.

As mentioned previously, this sounds like "signature stripping" being
invoked by whatever marker is in the message body. You mentioned "a
blue line in front", which I assume is the HTML side. A question is,
what's in the text part, which is where signature stripping is
generally defined. The standard is '-- \n' at the start is a new
line, so you may want to try looking at the text side of the message
before you reply to see what's there.

It would seem only some Outlook mails tend to be cut weird, possibly
only those sent from the installed Outlook client on Windows-PCs.
Mails sent from Office365 online or Macs seem to be cut properply.

Not sure at all about my conclusion though.

Hi,
that's true. I do not know what misbehaves here, but I'm able to
reproduce it too, when I have unchecked Edit->Preferences->Composer
Preferences->Wrap quoted text in replies. As a workaround, check that
option and things will work as they should. Or they do for me at least.

I've not been able to reproduce it earlier, because I've it set here.

A bug report would be nice to have.

Yes, that fixes it for me as well. I'm quite surprised I didn't

Per chance is the original message or any others in the chain coming from  the
mail
client on a recent Apple iPhone?

I have one person who routinely sends or replies to my emails from his iPhone
using
the native email client.   When I attempt to reply play to such a message.. his
message
part is skipped and the quote starts with my message.

His message/response  seems to be missing the  --   which denotes the end of the
body

I'd missed it too. I think the problem is that when new features appear
in Evolution we often don't notice them unless there's a specific
announcement.

Hi,
that's true. One of the main places for such "announcements" is the
NEWS file. There is written what had been done for the release. It's
not advertised loudly in any other way.

Guess how many hidden option in GSettings/DConf are, which can fine-
tune the behavior of the application in many ways. ;)

With new options, there's usually chosen a sane default, mostly to not
change the behavior to the current users, unless it's desired to change
it. The defaults do not work once the user changes the value.

Makes me wonder what else I've missed, especially as many of these

If you look in the bug report I submitted about this (it wasn't an
issue I was bothered about, but it appears no one else wanted to)

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/issues/1425

You can see that it was actually a duplicate of another bug report:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/issues/1365

and that was fixed a month ago in 3.39.3+ (and so will be in the stable
3.40.x release).

Read through the bug report(s). There is a patch in there and that
worked for me on FC33. If you need it fixed on other older versions
then you will need to lobby your distro maintainers to backport the
patch.

The issue is not to do with what format *you* select, but with the
format of the mail you are replying to.

I see, thank you.  Is there any option that would be a workaround other
than a patch/waiting for the upgrade?

Hi,
as Pete said, it's written in the bug reports. Like here:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/issues/1425#note_1065167

It's not in much detail, maybe some detailed steps will help. Open a
terminal and run these commands there:
 $ cd /tmp
 $ wget
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/commit/6a7df753b5e10f543dd930fb6a26ec9e126699c8.patch
 -O evo.patch
 $ cd /usr/share/evolution/webkit/
 $ sudo patch -p3 https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/evolution-list
