$$Excel-Macros$$ Gathering info from MySQL Bugzilla DB into Excel using VBA (is this even possible?)

2012-08-31 Thread Marcus Polk
If these questions have been answered elsewhere, the post is too long or
you basically do not feel like reading it, please feel free to tell me so.
I am typing it out, in hopes it helps someone. :-)

In all seriousness though, let me say that learning MySQL, SQL Server,
Perl, Apache, Bugzilla, what ODBC is and Excel programming all at the same
time, while in the long run will serve me well, is daunting right now. I am
learning on my own, but thank God this support list is here, otherwise it
would take me forever.

I am attempting to gather data into Excel (for charting or simple
spreadsheets) from our MySQL Bugzilla database. The Bugzilla database is
located on a newtwork server (installation and DB) and is basically farmed
out, although my company (read "ME") has to manage it.

In order to be able to speak to the server, I had to create and ODBC
connection, using MySQL connector (don't get me started on trying to
understand the difference between User DSN, System DSN, ODB files, etc.).
When attempting to create this connection, I had to connect to the actual
server as is is not a localhost. I finally figured out that I had to
designate the name of the server and then got an error that I could not
conect.

Originally, I thought I could do something like the following;

GRANT USAGE ON *.* TO 'root'@'%' IDENTIFIED BY 'password!';

However, this did not work. I now believe it is because all of the
privledges were set as "N". I then created a ROOT user with the same MySQL
statement, using the IP address of my system (instead of %) and manually
granted all the permissions, using MySQL Workbench queries. That worked.
Now, I have 3 ROOT users. The one for "localhost", the one I created with
"%" and the one I created with "my IP address".

I then attempted to use the Query Wizard in Excel 2010 to bring over what
info I wanted to see in my spreadsheet. I now have the following questions
about what I have done.

1. Does anyone know of a link to completely explain what a Pivot Table is?
2. If I switch all of the privledges for the ROOT user I created with "%",
will I then be able to access the database through Excel, from any system,
provided that system had the ODBC connection?
a. Basically, I need someone to be able to click a link and have the data
they want, spit out into Excel. I won't be running these queries every time.
3. How do I delete all of the extra ROOT users I created, without deleting
the main ROOT?
a. Is there a way to simply modify the existing ROOT account to work off of
any other IP address?
b. Regarding the above, I am assuming it would be more secure, for me to
create a user other than ROOT and grant that user the permissions needed to
run the Excel queries.
4. If I want to run queries and dump the data into Excel, is it easier to
run through the Query Wizard,, use VB code, use Excel code or a combination
of all 3?
5. When I did connect to the database and attempted to get the data I
wanted into Excel, I noticed that some of the data (assigned_to,
product_id, component_id, etc.) are numbers. Is that because they need to
be referenced by that number in another table? If so, how do I associate
that data without the Excel query complaning that they aren't? How do I get
the names of the items into my spreadsheet, instead of numbers?

I apologize this is long and I don't know if it will even get read,
answered or even deleted. If anyone can only answer a part of it though, I
would appreciate any info I could get. Thanks.

very long text strings. Does anyone have code that will expand the column
width when I select any of the cells and return to original (or specific)

Subject: Re: $$Excel-Macros$$ Combining variables with Excel Formulas

Your result is exactly what you told Excel to do.
when you put something in quotes ("), you're telling Excel to "take this string
LITERALLY"
and do not "evaluate" the string.
So you basically said to set the cell value to the value of 'indname' and
append a string.

You might as well say:
activecell.value = indname & " Excel is Fun!"

So, the problem is with the syntax.

What I would suggest that you do is manually enter the countif into a cell.

Something like:
=COUNTIF(Data!B2:B100,A4)
(using the appropriate ranges)

Then, "prefix" the cell formula with something like: "Test_Title:"
="Test_Title:" & COUNTIF(Data!B2:B100,A4)

Next,  Fire up the Macro Recorder.
Simply click inside the formula and hit "enter".
(You don't really need to change anything)
Stop Recording and look at the macro.

You'll see a formula that looks something like:

ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = _
    "=""Test_Title:"" & COUNTIF(Data!R[-3]C[-36]:R[96]C[-36],RC[-37])"

(your values will vary)

Now, replace "Test_Title" with your  variable "indname"

Now, the problem here is that you want VBA to substitute the VALUE of "indname"
But you need the quotes (") in Excel.
So you'll actually have to add a couple of quotes.

Note:  "=" means to add a literal string EQUAL SIGN
But how do you add a double-quote? (")
The trick here is that "special" characters like this are represented by using
them twice:
"" will represent a single (").
But """ doesn't work, because VBA interprets it as an OPEN delimiter, then
a quote string, and no closing delimiter.
So, actually to enter a double-quote, it takes (4) of them ()
this is (open delimiter)"(close delimiter)
if you want to include an equal sign (=) then it's: (open delimiter)="(close
delimiter)
or "="""

so your resulting macro code looks like:

    ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = _
    "=""" & indname & """ & COUNTIF(Data!R[-3]C[-36]:R[96]C[-36],RC[-37])"

in your example, it would probably be:

ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=""" & indname & """ &
COUNTIF(Stocks!C[-2]:C,Main!RC[-2])"

although I cannot test it.
--
OK, I COULD have simply given you the syntax correction, but how can you learn
anything from THAT?

I wish I could but it has proprietary data. Here is a little clarification
The variable indname is set by going to a specific cell that has some text
(exable below)

Range("A1").Select
indname = Selection.Value

This sets the variable indname which is some text

>From there I goto another cell where I need to combine the name of the
variable (indname) and a number generated from a countif formula

Dim sBody As String

Dim lDataRow As Long

Dim cl As Range

$$Excel-Macros$$ Combining variables with Excel Formulas

2012-08-31 Thread mburkett
I have some code that is not working as I expected. I set a variable from a
value in a cell within the worksheet and add a countif formula. The result
I get in the cell is the variable along with the formula as written (as
opposed to the result of the formula). Ideas?

'set variable
indname = Selection.Value
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = indname & "+=COUNTIF(Stocks!C[-2]:C,Main!RC[-2])"
'Here is the result in the cell: LC Consumer Staples Sector
+=COUNTIF(Stocks!C[-2]:C,Main!RC[-2])

Re: $$Excel-Macros$$ Number into hr:mm;ss

2012-08-31 Thread Paul Schreiner
We don't really have enough information.

hh:mm:ss is actually a TIME OF DAY display format.

As you probably already know, Excel stores date and time as a number.
the date is the number of days from 1/1/1900
(so 31-Aug-2012 is 41152)
"time" is actually the fractional part of a day.
at 6:00AM, 1/4 of the day is complete, so the "time" is .5
at 10:12:40 am, .4254662037 of the day has passed.

So, if the total number of hours between two date/time(s) is less than 1 day
(say from 30-Aug-2012 12:12:40 PM to 31-Aug-2012 10:12:00 AM)
then you can simply subtract the two numbers   = 0.916203703709471
Changing the display format to hh:mm:ss will show you 21:59:20

however, it's important to note that what you're REALLY doing is displaying
the date 01-Jan-1900 9:59:20 PM
it just LOOKS like what you expect.

But if the difference is MORE than 24 hours, it will only show you the decimal
portion of the result
(the fractional part of the day).
because, after all, there's no such thing as 26 o'clock!

So.. what you're going to have to do is mathematically calculate the number of
hours
by taking int(timeval) * 24  to get the number of hours.
=INT($A$3*24)
To get the number of minutes,
you need to get the total minutes by multiplying the time interval by 24 to get
hours, then 60 to get minutes.
then, if you use mod() to basically divide it by the number of minutes in the
hours of full hours (from above)
and return the minutes that were less than 60:
=INT(MOD($A$3*24*60,INT($A$3*24)))

Using the same technique, you calculate the total seconds, then use MOD() to
remove the seconds from full minutes:
=INT(MOD($A$3*24*60*60,INT($A$3*24*60)))

So.. you can put this all into a cell like:
=INT($A$3*24) & " hrs, "
& INT(MOD($A$3*24*60,INT($A$3*24))) & " mins, "
& INT(MOD($A$3*24*60*60,INT($A$3*24*60))) & " secs"

or, if you really want it in hh:mm:ss
=INT($A$3*24) & ":"
& INT(MOD($A$3*24*60,INT($A$3*24))) & ":"
& INT(MOD($A$3*24*60*60,INT($A$3*24*60)))

actually, that's h:m:s

If you really want leading 0's, you'll have to use a =TEXT() function, like:
=TEXT(INT($A$3*24),"00") & ":"
& TEXT(INT(MOD($A$3*24*60,INT($A$3*24))),"00") & ":"
& TEXT(INT(MOD($A$3*24*60*60,INT($A$3*24*60))),"00")

Re: $$Excel-Macros$$ Error in 2010

2012-08-31 Thread Paul Schreiner
New to Excel 2010?
There are new file formats for Excel files:
.xlsx
.xlsm
.xlsb

.xlsx does not allow macros.
The theory is that it is less likely to share an Excel macro-virus.
So.. if you RECEIVE a file in .xlsx format, you can be assured that it is
Missing Malicious Macros.

.xlsm and .xlsb both allow macros, but .xlsm is a format that allows  XML
add-ins.
(the main advantage that I can see here is the ability to design custom tool
bars that look like Excel toolbars)

.xlsb is a "binary" format.
from what I've seen, .xlsb files are 50%-75% SMALLER than .xlsm files,
and also smaller than .xlsx files.
They also seem to run faster
(when dealing with macros with long run-times, a 10% difference is significant.
if your macros typically run in 5-10 seconds, you'll not notice a difference)

Don Sir, Nice Solution with excellent logic..

Kuldeep, you can also use vba version as UDF

Function Get_RevenueDate(Rng As Excel.Range)
Dim Cell As Range
For Each Cell In Rng.Cells
If Cell.Value > 0 Then
Get_RevenueDate = Cells(1, Cell.Column).Value
Exit Function
End If
Next
End Function

Row Labels: Supplier and Values: Sum of Amount.*
*3. Then I want to extract the details of each supplier in different tab so
as to create an invoice for the individual supplier showing them the
transactions during the amount. The extracted data should automatically
extract data from pivot for as many supplier available. In the attached
file as instance there are 4 suppliers namely A,B,C,D.*
*4. The extracted data should automatically rename the worksheet tab
containing the name of supplier.*

Re: $$Excel-Macros$$ Need help

2012-08-31 Thread NOORAIN ANSARI
Dear Sriram,

As we know in Excel 2003 Total rows are 65536 and total columns are 256 but
in Excel 2007+ total rows are
1048576 and total columns are 16384.

You need to take table array range A65536 and Column range 256, then
vlookup function will working fine.

Feel free to ask if you get any issue..

Dear Chandra,

In VBA Version you can also use..

Function GetWorkDays(ByVal StartDate As Long, ByVal EndDate As Long)
Dim d As Long, dCount As Long
For d = StartDate To EndDate
If Weekday(d, vbMonday) < 6 Then
dCount = dCount + 1
End If
Next d

GetWorkDays = dCount

End Function

2012-08-31 Thread NOORAIN ANSARI
Dear Chandra,

Networkingdays is good solution for your query, but it doesn't work in
excel 2003.

For excel 2003 you can use..

*=SUMPRODUCT(--(WEEKDAY(ROW(INDIRECT(TODAY()&":"&B2)),2)<6))*

if you want to exclude only sun then use..

*=SUMPRODUCT(--(WEEKDAY(ROW(INDIRECT(TODAY()&":"&B2)),2)<7))

*see attached sheet for more clarity.
