There are LOTS of reasons why macros can be slow.And.. "slow" is relative.
I have a workbook with over 130,000 rows and 72 columns.
I can report summaries for these rows in SECONDS.
my macro USED to take several minutes, but I simplified the code and found that 
it was looping through the lines even after I found what I was looking for!
Plus, I reduced the number of iterations by changing the order of the search.
Other things like using Copy/Paste instead of assigning the value of one cell 
from another is VERY time consuming because it copies all of the cell 
formatting to the clipboard before pasting it to the new cell.
So.. what you mean by "excel is slow" and "when we run macros"... could have 
LOTS of meanings. 
It's going to depend on your specific situation.

figure out what is going on.

With Macros, the excel size tends to increase, which may lower the speed of
its processing.

In general, it being slow or fast with or without macros is a relative
experience.

If there are lots & lots of formulas and excel size is very high (in XXX
MB), the excel will be slow on opening the file even when there is no
macro. You will see on lower-right showing % data evaluated.

With simple macro, excel might not be visually slow. But if there are lot
of macros and some being nested macros. Under this situation, the
evaluation will take time. The excel seems to be working slow.
