Er, nope, Barry.

Its either mailr.state.ms.us (preferred) or mx1.state.ms.us (secondary).

I tried telnet'ing from outside to our SMTP server(on port

case you could not receive email from outside??? Am I wrong?
I just sent an email from outside and it came right through.

I can telnet from to our internal address just fine (NAT is
in use) And sent email from the command line to my outside
email address just fine. Is it normal for the TO: field to be
 blank when doing this?

Should any SMTP server respond to each command?
  I do a 'mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED][ENTER]'
and after a couple of seconds it respnds OK, blah..

Then I do 'rcpt to: [EMAIL PROTECTED][ENTER]'
and it sits there and acts stupid... no response after that. I have
tried using a valid username in the domain and also tried sending
 to
  an outside address (myself)

Although after I left the telnet window up for about 2 minutes the
  window just closed...

When I telnet to our SMTP server I get responses very quick on each

RE: M$ Exchange Move Server Wizard

2001-12-26 Thread Roger Seielstad

Easily overcome by adding the legacy X.500 address (or distinguished name,
if you prefer) pre-migration.

MSW sucks arse when moving more than one server between orgs at different
times. Something I do a LOT of.

We are in the process of planning a migration and have looked
at Move Server Wizard and would definitely choose it over
Exmerge. Not just for Single instance storage but also to
maintain the links between calendars for meetings. People
hate it when after the move, cancelled meetings are not
removed from their calendars after acting on a cancellation
notice. But one thing that we don't know for sure, If you
use Move Server Wizard for a multi site organization, will
you break the meetings that span sites? Will you break
meetings that span servers in a single site?

Ok, let me ellaborate on this a little bit.

I work in PSS, in a group close to the group that the
individual who originially wrote ExMerge worked in. That
individual maintained the ExMerge code for several years.
That individual has now moved to MCS, and is no longer
 maintaining that code.

I'm not saying that it's buggy. I'm not saying that there's
anything wrong with it. I'm not saying that you shouldn't
use it. What I'm saying is that a lot of time and effort was
used to delevop and test the Move Server Wizard. It is fully
supported, and there are code maintainers for it. For moving
servers between sites or orgs, in my opinion, Move Server is
the best, hands down. I will recommend it each and every
 time the question is asked.

Strange, I've never seen Exmerge crash my server, but I
suppose there is a possibility. Then again, wouldn't ISScan
have the same potential impact? We (the general we) run
these utilities occasionally for virus outbreaks, etc...
These are the supported methods to ripping stuff out of the
IS during these types of outbreaks. So how may I ask do you
propose admins take care of their server then?

Most of us know that there are different versions of Exmerge
for the different levels of Exchange, now if this utility is
buggy as you say, why do we Exchange professionals out in
the real world use it? Why has it been suggested we use it?
Or are you quoting how MS wants it done? For those of us
in the real world, there is the MS way and there is the
real way. Are you telling me I've been doing it wrong for
 the last 6 years?

At any rate, there is a risk involved any time you do
anything to the exchange server databases. That's like
saying that eseutil is NOT supported because it can crash the
 server.

I'm just curious to your position on all of this. Being a
part of MS, I know you can't divulge your honest opinion, but
throw me a bone. I've been working with Exchange since it
was born, so... I'm a bit curious. I'm certainly not saying
you're wrong, but you have my attention for the minute.

I have an Exchange 2000 box sp2 that is having an OWA access problem. All IE
clients 5.0 and up (which use Kerberos Authentication) do not get full
access to mail folders. When one of these clients connects, two messages
pop up stating (an internal server error has occurred). No items in the
inbox appear and the (folders button) doesn't work. The only Icon that
really works is the Calender, address lists also work.

I'm not testing through a firewall and this is not a frontend-backend server
situation. Just a lan connection through 1 switch.

IE 4.0 and Netscape connect and work normally although it's the pre sp2 look
and feel.

My pc and server times are synced.

Permissions to web shares and folder access appear correct.

We do have ISA implemented and I tested ssl to see if the isa server was
picking off dhtml and xml transmissions, but the problem still persisted
with ssl enabled.

The IIS server logs show that Kerberos connections are working.

I really can't tell if the problem is Kerberos, permissions, or dhtml/xml
being blocked, or something else.

Has any one seen this before or does anyone have any Ideas?

Your assistance is appreciated!

Jon Hussey.

For those offenders that don't seem to understand, here is a brief
explanation.
1. Set up a Public Folder and subscribe THAT address to the list to
receive eMail. See the FAQ if you need more info on accomplishing this step.
2. Set up your own personal address and set it to NOT receive any

receive eMail. See the FAQ if you need more info on accomplishing
this step.
2. Set up your own personal address and set it to NOT receive any
eMail from the list. This still allows you to post to the list.

My 2 favorite OOF's that I received today were from Dan Aalberg whose
OOF
was completely blank, and from James Clayton whose message states
that not
only is he out, but their entire IT organization is out. Hello...Mc

OK, the most important question of all was left out...What virus was found??
Saying its just a virus is no good to anyone...
Head over too http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp and do
a scan on the machine. Come back and tell us what it is. Many virus's today
cannot be cleaned with a simple scan and require additional work. If we can
find out what the user has, we may be able to point you to the correct tool.

Subject: Possible Trojan.

I have an outside client experiencing what appears to be a Trojan on their
machine. I had them update their Antivirus (Norton) and perform a scan but
there still appears to be something wrong. I originally noticed the problem
because they were sending random *.exe files to my network...which get
deleted immediately (Exch 5.5 with Antigen 6.2). I contacted the user and
determined there was a problem. Following is a description of the problem
as stated by the user:
(Any input would be greatly appreciated).
---start
We are using Windows 98. we ran an updated Norton and found it to be a
virus. It appears to be more than one. We quarantined it and all was
repaired but 7 files marked as window/command files and window/cab files
and it shows them as exe. We sent them to Symantec to analyze. We are also
receiving mail from others, whom we do not know, who are also having
problems and are trying to write for assistance to someone. For some
reason, the mail is coming here. The email that it shows as being sent to
on these letters is [EMAIL PROTECTED] rather than our true email of
[EMAIL PROTECTED] We have our outgoing mail as Dale, Paula and Family and
that mail is coming in as [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Paula and Family. It is very
odd. This is even after we have finished with the virus scans and cleaned
the PC. One last thing also, maybe it will make sense to you. We received
a piece of mail, that was apparently from a persons yahoo auto response
box stating that he was out of town, (set probably so his box wouldn't fill
while he was gone) no attachments, no nothing, but yet we received it FROM
him. Many of the subject fields, including the yahoo one, have sentences
taken from my resume which I have saved in my scanner files and Microsoft
Word. It would seem, if I fixed most of the virus and quarantined ALL of
it, I shouldn't be having this problem. We are currently looking for where
we put our CD with the firewall on it. We DEFINITELY agree with you on this
as well. Thank you VERY much, this has been confusing. We recently
re-formatted our PC and would hate to have to do it all over again.
---end

Brian Murphy

RE: Uninstall Groupshield (was Haiku Friday)

2001-12-26 Thread Durkee, Peter

Run the Groupshield install, and choose the uninstall option. The message body scanner
can be removed using the add/remove software control panel. After that's all done you
can remove the Admin DLLs that infest Exchange Admin using the technique in section
3.70 of the FAQ.

shows they know how to work and play well with others.

For those offenders that don't seem to understand, here is a brief
explanation.
1. Set up a Public Folder and subscribe THAT address to the list
to receive eMail. See the FAQ if you need more info on accomplishing
this step.
2. Set up your own personal address and set it to NOT receive
any eMail from the list. This still allows you to post to the list.

My 2 favorite OOF's that I received today were from Dan Aalberg whose
OOF was completely blank, and from James Clayton whose message states
that not only is he out, but their entire IT organization is out.
Hello...Mc Fly...that's like saying please come hack me 'cuz no one is
watching the store.

Programmatically access the Exchange Server's mail tracking reports/log files

2001-12-26 Thread Vishal

Hi ,

We are using CDO for sending out mails (via Exchnage Server 2K) through
our web application and need a way of identifying and updating all
(successful/unsuccessful) mail delivery statuses in our local application
database.

I'm looking for some code sample (VB,VC) to access the Exchange Server's
mail tracking reports/log files and update this information in our
application Database.

Also can u please tell me what are the different ways of monitoring email
messages delivered by the exchange server to the outside world?

Would really appreciate any sort of inputs/pointers.

Kind regards

Mailbox doesn't mount after Restore

2001-12-26 Thread Mike

I backed up the Exchange Information Store using MS Backup in order to
rebuild the Server PC under a different domain name. After restoring the
databases (checked the 'last back up' and 'mount after restore' options)
the mailbox and public folder store doesn't mount. I get the message (ID
no: c1041724) that 'an internal processing error has occured. Try
restartin the ESM or MS Exc Information Store service, or both.'
I checked at the knowledgebase and used the eseutil to make a hard
recovery but I discovered that no log file was created in the path I
indicated during the restore.
I tried to recover the data using an offline folder of Outlook but I get
the message that this folder cannot be accessed because it has been
configured for use with a different mailbox.
Could you please help?
T.I.A.

RE: Preventing Hacks

2001-12-26 Thread Doug Hampshire

A) Turn off the box. That always resolves file is inaccessible problems.
B) Provide some actual detail on the list server, platform/OS/version/etc.
C) Securing a specific software item is never a broad question, it's very
specific. Find the resources that are dedicated to that software be it
mailing list or newsgroup or vendor.

I know this is a broad question but I just want a general overview. How
would you go about securing a list server from outside malicious attacks.

RE: Preventing Hacks

2001-12-26 Thread Byron Kennedy

some general best practices

* disable unneeded services/daemons

* place the system behind a stateful firewall - allowing only the
application access you require for the list-serv. Don't permit netbios,
nfs, rpc, ftp, or tftp accross inbound or outbound.

* stay up2date on all os and application level patches.

At this point, if you're sure someone got in, confirm your firewall config
and then rebuild the system - following the other steps above.

many more details, but this should get you going.

Subject: Mailbox doesn't mount after Restore

Problems in the IMS , owa and smtp

2001-12-26 Thread Harish

Let me describe the problems one by one.

The exchange server configurations:

We are running Exchange Server 5.5 with Exchange Service Pack 4. We have
configured two domains (DNS) in this server say xyz.com and
abc.com(names are fictious). We have configured our corporate email
addresses for these domains.

We have configured the server for the internet mail services and NT
user accounts for validating the users.

Problems for people out side the office network

System works perfectly fine for:

Sending/receiving mails from our office using the SMTP address of ISP
(What I feel is, this particular server may not be having any routing
restrictions as of now, but as and when they bring routing restrictions we
will face problems).

System doesn’t work for:

The people out side the network say in other office and people who are
mobile(Laptops) are not able to send any mails using their ISPs SMTP
address.(i.e. using the abc.com or xyz.com)

Inside the office network we are using the ISPs outgoing SMTP address and
the system is working perfectly fine.

***

Problems for the site hosted

The hosted sites in our server use CDONTS to send mails which in turn uses
the SMTP server. When we are doing this the IIS is hanging abruptly.

This problem is temporarily solved by changing the port in the SMTP server
in IIS form 25 to 9025.

Problems in outlook web access

Outlook web access Works for

1. Sending mail from [EMAIL PROTECTED] to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sending mail
from [EMAIL PROTECTED] to [EMAIL PROTECTED], Receiving mails from
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Any external domain) to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Outlook web access doesn't work

1. Sending mail from [EMAIL PROTECTED] to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

For your Reference:

The DNS server, The Exchange server and the IIS server is on the same
machine.

Thanks in advance

RE: Problems in the IMS , owa and smtp

#1, you cannot have the IMS and the IIS SMTP server on the same machine.
Port conflictsthey both want port 25, though I suppose you could change
the IIS port.

Give us the real domain names, I think there is some DNS stuff going on
here.

RE: Tumbleweed Antivirus?

2001-12-26 Thread Soysal, Serdar

You can't do that. Tumbleweed doesn't plug in to Exchange. The other way
around is feasible though. Use Tumbleweed as your DMZ SMTP and utilize SMTP
mail scanning and use ScanMail internally.

We've been using Tumbleweed for a few years now and I'm afraid their support
has gone downhill since we purchased it [1]. Now they want to charge us an
outrageous amount for a version upgrade (more expensive than the original
purchase price) even though we have always had maintenance. I would really
consider other products before committing yourself. MailSweeper and Praetor
are the ones that I had liked.

I would not dump scanmail...maybe I could leave Trend on the internet
gateway and run Tumbleweed internally in order to have dual coverage. just
an idea.

Subject: Tumbleweed Antivirus?

We currently use Trend Micro Scanmail 3.52 and I couldn't be any happier
with it. However, there is a plan in place to globally purchase the
Tumbleweed Product. 'They' want to know if we are intersted in using it if
they do purchase for the entire site. Does anyone have any experience with
Tumbleweed? I've never heard of it and their website is a bit vague. I
would have a very hard time scrapping scanmail, they have saved our butts
many times. Maybe I could make a dual effort fighting the virus attacks.
thanks...

AV! a full time job?

2001-12-26 Thread Hansen, Eric

Just curious what some of the Exchange Admins think. Would you consider
Antivirus a full time job? I speak for both email and network/desktop.

Around here it isn't, although we wish it was cause it seems to be getting

I have an Exchange 2000 box sp2 that is having an OWA access problem.
All IE clients 5.0 and up (which use Kerberos Authentication) do not get
full access to mail folders. When one of these clients connects, two
messages pop up stating (an internal server error has occurred). No
items in the inbox appear and the (folders button) doesn't work. The
only Icon that really works is the Calender, address lists also work.

I'm not testing through a firewall and this is not a frontend-backend
server situation. Just a lan connection through 1 switch.

IE 4.0 and Netscape connect and work normally although it's the pre sp2
look and feel.

I really can't tell if the problem is Kerberos, permissions, or
dhtml/xml being blocked, or something else.

Has any one seen this before or does anyone have any Ideas?

Your assistance is appreciated!

Jon Hussey.

I have tried those settings as low as possible but nothing has changed.

I had some free ms support with our msdn subscription and talked to an

either a webdav issue or file permissions issue. No solutions yet
however.

I have a user who is stating that sometimes old deleted mail reappears in
her inbox. Sometimes messages that are months and months old.

She uses Outlook XP but I believe this happened prior to Outlook XP when
we were using Outlook 98. The exchange 5.5 server is patched to SP6a and
Exchange SP4.

Any idea what could be causing this? I haven't tried giving her a new
mailbox but I might resort to that.
