Problem with accessing a PF

2002-05-21 Thread Parrnelli GS11 Ben T

NT 4 SP6a SRP
Exchange 5.5 SP4

I have what started as one, but is now up to four users who will lose access
to some of our public folders at seemingly random intervals.

This has happened to the original user about three times in the last month
to six weeks. The user has reviewer permission to the folder through a
distribution list, and will still be listed in the DL, but cannot see the
contents of the folder. Also, he does not get the error message about not
having permission, just, "Unable to display the folder".

He can, however, read the subfolders he has permission to that are
underneath this folder. (and to which he has the exact same rights!)

The only temporary fix we had found was to remove the user from the DL, wait
for replication to complete, then re-add his account to the DL, but lately
that hasn't been working either. Also, giving him reviewer rights by name
to the folder does not work.

To throw one last curve in, the users can access these folders through OWA.

So far, this has happened to three users on the same folder, and a fourth
user on a different folder.

Any solutions, suggestions or WAGs would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

RE: Drive m:????

It wsa a really good idea based on the assumption that if an
administrator didn't know what it was, he would find out BEFORE doing
anything with it

On second thought, it was just a bad idea

I've heard of lots of people using drive M extensively!

They change permissions And destroy their database
They scan it for viruses. And destroy their database
They play with it cuz it's there And destroy their database

Does anyone know of a 3rd party utility that can calculate the mailboxes
that are not currently being used. Since we are using Trend Micro's
Scanmail, we cannot depend on using the last time a user logs onto his/her
mailbox, since Scanmail does so on a regular basis. Any help would be
appreciated.

Exchange not connecting to remote sites

2002-05-21 Thread Arch Willingham

Prior to our upgrade, had our Exchange 5.5 server receive all e-mails and
then they got forwarded to our remote site. I installed the ADC connector
and then upgraded to Exchange 2000. The remote site is still on Exchange
5.5.

Two questions:

1. It is very difficult to tell how the replication is supposed to work (it
was easy in 5.5). The connector came over in the upgrade but I can't tell if
it works.
2. How do you make it where the users at the other site show up in the GAL
like they did in 5.5?

Thanks,

Arch Willingham

RE: restore exchange to different hardware

2002-05-21 Thread MS Exchange List

Hello,

I think it has gotten more complicated than 5.5, especially for different hardware.
If you're going by the DR doc, light candles, make sacrifices, etc... that you'll be
able to restore the System State to your different hardware.

They have updated the E2K DR doc from the original one. The new version of the E2K
Disaster Recovery Doc (looks like released in March of this year) gives more warning
of this than the earlier August 2000 DR doc, and some tips about using Safe mode,
etc

The DR Mailbox Recovery Doc
http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/techinfo/deployment/2000/MailboxRecovery.doc goes
into more about recovering a server without restoring the System State, and what
attributes you may need to modify. It does not appear to have been updated since the
original August 2000 release.

Good Luck,
Brent

The hardware can be different. You just need the same O/S and Exchange level
(version, sp etc). The only thing that might go wrong in your case is that the
previous system had a multiprocessor HAL, and the new one will be single proc HAL.

Obviously, you'll need the same server name, site name etc. etc.

See http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/techinfo/administration/55/backuprestore.a

RE: OT Upgrade question

2002-05-21 Thread Chinnery Paul

Jumping in...
That, support going away, was a major selling point for us to get our
servers moved to Win 2000. (Actually, we also told them that our servers
probably would be too slow to run 2K, so we're gettting new servers, too).
It's crazy because our users are complaining about how slow the system is
now. Yet, our selling point was support ending.
Oh, well. I guess whatever convinces them as long as it's honest.

RE: OT Upgrade question

2002-05-21 Thread Schwartz, Jim

If your management likes Gartner reports, they suggest that the "must move
off 5.5 date" to be 2Q04.

When you think about non-support, you should also factor in that more and
more technical folks are moving to E2K. The list of people that can run a
5.5 organization is going to get shorter and they'll have a harder time
replacing you when you go work for a company that will upgrade. Just ask the
mainframers how hard a time they had finding qualified Cobol programmers
during Y2K.

We're a smaller
company(
<40 users) and we currently run NT 4.0 and Exchange 5.5. Both run great and
have been very stable (knock on wood).

My question is how do you approach upper management asking to upgrade to
Windows and Exchange 2000 when they have the "if it ain't broke, don't fix
it" mentality? I've already tried the "additional functionality" route, but
they're not buying it.

Bonus? Yeah, right. Our salary people had to take a 10% paycut that was

I am having problems with my Exchange 2000 SP2 and OWA.

When I am OWA, it wants the Office 2000 Standard CD, when I click on New

the items in the contacts.

HELP!!

RE: OT Upgrade question

2002-05-21 Thread Chuck Bryant

If its "not broke" you don't need support so who cares if support is
available?

Eventually the "increased functionality" may be of value to the higher
ups,
after one of them hears about some great thing from a buddy on the golf
course, etc. Address it then. Meanwhile, show them how much money you've
saved them by not upgrading and ask for a portion of those savings as a
bonus.

RE: OWA - FTP Type repsonse. - E2K - The fix

For info

See Q289869 on the FTP view problem and Q293386 just about covers the second
issue.

Subject: OWA - FTP Type repsonse. - E2K

I have an upgraded 5.5 server now on E2K sp2 which responds with FTP type
browsing when accessing the OWA.

I'm not getting any errors. I had to follow a few Q's as the exchfilt.dll
did not swap to the new version on upgrade, not sure if this is related.
Also the /exadmin virtual was missing. I have added this. The application
still not seem to start.

Also the server has recipient policies to accept mail from other domain
names. These never authenticate via OWA, any reason for this? Ive tried
adding another virtual HTTP server for the said mailboxes/domains, but no
joy.

Thanks

If they've determined the additional functionality isn't worth the cost,
why should you upgrade? Wait to upgrade until MS is discontinuing

Okay, I wasn't really thinking about golf clubs, booze, football tickets, or vacation

So I guess it's just "The best $245 of your company's money you'll ever spend when

The hardware can be different. You just need the same O/S and Exchange
level (version, sp etc). The only thing that might go wrong in your case is
that the previous system had a multiprocessor HAL, and the new one will be
single proc HAL.

Obviously, you'll need the same server name, site name etc. etc.

See

Hello,
Last night our server crashed. We have all backups i think, but we are not
able to buy excatly same HW configuration for new server (it was 2proc tyan
thunder k7). We want to restore uor server from backups to a different
machine whis is 1 proc, AMD Athlon. Is it possible to restore it to that
machine ?

If yes can anyone point me to some documents describing this scenario ?

Thanks a lot for any advice

Profile Maker How to?

2002-05-21 Thread David Gibbons

Hey all

I'm maving quite a few problems with my exchange server move (yes I tested
it and none of this stuff happened in test so I'm stuck with it). I'm
moving from one server to another and into another container. I was using
a 3rd party tool that failed me completly in the live enviroment
(BindView). So here I am, I need to update all the profiles in my company
with a login scrip and wish to use Modprof from Microsoft. I need it to
append the new server name to the exchange profile, problem... I can't
figure out how to use the darn thing. Does anyone have a sample *.prf
that is not the Outlook.prf that you can download from Microsoft? It has
everything in it and I just need the exchange server and can't fiugure out
how to pull all the unneeded text from it so I can test it.

Thanks
David (Really tired with a caffee IV) Gibbons.

M: drive just allows access to your Exchange server via the file system
(i.e. Windows Explorer). Although it may have some applications, I've never
heard of anyone using it extensively. You definitely can live without it.

Exchange 2000 - where is the equiv. of the IMS eventvwr?

2002-05-21 Thread Arch Willingham

I just installed Exchange 2000 and am having difficulties finding things where there
used to be. I used to set Exchange 5.5 so that I could see (in the eventvwr) when
messages flowed in and out of our site (via IMS connector). Is there a way to do that
now?

Thanks,

2002-05-21 Thread Arch Willingham

Okwhat's this Drive M: everyone talks about? I just installed Exchange 2000 last
night and I don't see diddly squat about a drive m:. Note, that the server (and all of
our workstations) already map to a drive we call m:. Is that the conflict?

Do we need it?

Thanks,

Arch

The hardware can be different. You just need the same O/S and Exchange
level (version, sp etc). The only thing that might go wrong in your case is
that the previous system had a multiprocessor HAL, and the new one will be
single proc HAL.

Obviously, you'll need the same server name, site name etc. etc.

RE: routing/relay issues

2002-05-21 Thread Darcy Adams

Use both settings: authenticated users and by IP. The two are inclusive. That is,
the IMS will accept mail from authenticated users, and from listed IP's.

-Original Message-
From: Mike Rissen [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]

Subject: routing/relay issues

Scenario:

1) Company has Exchange 5.5 with all the service packs.
2) Company has user create a new account via web page.
3) User is immediately e-mailed an account and temporary password
3.a) email is NOT authenticated in any way.
 3.b) scripting language is iHTML
3.c) User is almost always OUTSIDE the domain.
4) User changes password and is then allowed to do his thing.

Everything works GREAT until a group of people called ORDB come onto the
scene.

You see, the only way this works is that Relaying is enabled in the IMS
settings...also allowing spammers to mercilessly use their website and get
them BLACKLISTED. Mail starts bouncing, connections being refused, etc.
So turn off the routing except to only authenticated users? BAM! every
e-mail functionality of the website dies.

I've tried placing routing restrictions on the IMS so that only the IP
address of the web server can use relaying. Nope. Even though the
scripting language is server side, the email seems to be originating from
the users IP.

I know this because when we opened it up for that IP address, I could open
a browser on the server and everything works fine...but on another user's
machine inside the firewall...It dies.
_

Even though the user's IP address seems to be used, SOMETHING is going
through the server because the IP address in the iHTML is a 10.10.x.x
(non-routable). Its inside the firewall. Is it somehow translated? Can
you explain that? I didn't think I was net stupid...but alas
--
I thought about creating another IMS module in Exchange (books have talked
about doing this for other reasons) and have it answer on a secret port
(NOT 25). Have this one totally open to relaying. The iHTML can specify
a
specific port to connect to. Stupid idea? If someone found it..the whole
thing would start over again. Is it possible?
--
I thought about having some process sitting somewhere (maybe on the SQL
server) that would do the emailing and have it authenticate. The iHTML
would then only add all the information into a table and be done with it.
The SQL server would check for records every minute or so and e-mail once
for each record it finds. Client doesn't necessarily want this.

Any other advice or ideas from the gurus?

His name was Fred.

He gave me the same warnings about the -1018. Unfortunately "My hardware
vendor" is not one person. That machine is a generic Intel machine that
has been an Exchange server for years. It has an Adaptec 394x
controller, 512 MB or RAM, two pretty fast, name brand hard drives, etc.
As you know, that makes it worse as you don't know where to begin. Its
like an umpire at a MLB game getting beaned by a bottle of Bud...who in
the world threw it?

People who bitch about Microsoft (PSS at least) are generally also the
same people who are incapable of formulating an intelligent technical
question.

You ought to be on the phone with your hardware vendor at the moment as
well, your -1018 error is a hardware related issue, and you'll need some
parts swapage to keep this from happening again. Oh and take good
notes from the PSS feller and tell him we all say hi.

Subject: restore exchange to different hardware
Importance: High

Hello,
Last night our server crashed.

RE: Virus/Spam filtering

2002-05-21 Thread Andrew Chan

And that product sucks!!! I just talked with their tech yesterday about
several questions I have, and even they admit that since it's a version
1.0 product, there are lots of bugs to be worked out. I wouldn't
recommend it for production use any time soon...

Symantec has recently upgraded their NAV for Exchange to also include
Content/Spam filtering as well, and have gone to a nice GUI for
management. This is only good for E2K though, and they have not
announced any plans to port it to 5.5

The original question (that was violently snipped) asked about both
content and virus scanning (hence the subject line "Virus/Spam
filtering"). It is true that TrendMicro is very good on the virus
scanning side, its eManager plug-in is just a mediocre content filter.
For virus scanning, Sybari's Antigen is just as good. You can't go
wrong with either product. I believe Antigen has content filtering now
as well, but I haven't tested it yet.

For content filtering all of the three below are decent:
- MIMESweeper: they are the leader in this field. Very strong product.
- Praetor: good/cheaper alternative to MIMESweeper. The next version
will be based on Transport Event Sinks which they claim gives them a big
performance boost. The downside is it will require Win2K
- MMS from Tumbleweed Communications: they are MIMESweeper's top
competitor and this is the only product that has a comparable feature
set AFAIK. However, their support is pretty much non-existent

deactivating the original server, adding the new one to the proper security
group memberships to do a setup.exe /disasterrecovery and then restoring the
DBs, rather than doing a system state restore on the new machine off the
network, dropping the old machine, bringing the new one up on the network
and doing the setup /disasterrecovery? An ms whitepaper recomended the
latter, while an ms tech recommended the former. It seems to me it'd be

Re: Virus/Spam filtering

2002-05-21 Thread Chris H

I concur. I update the content manager daily and it still only stops about
10% of our SPAM.
As well, there is a nifty little bug that wipes out your custom settings
every time you update the pattern file. Even with the fix from Trend it
still does it.

The rest of their products I am pretty happy with. They do seem a bit slow
at pushing out signatures for new virii IMHO though.

I saw a beta at MEC last year of their new all-in-one
Interscan/Scanmail/E-Content Manager software and it looked like a big
improvement.

Oh and take good
notes from the PSS feller and tell him we all say hi.

setup.exe /disasterrecovery and then restoring the DBs, rather than doing a system
state restore on the new machine off the network, dropping the old machine, bringing
the new one up on the network and doing the setup /disasterrecovery? An ms whitepaper
recomended the latter, while an ms tech recommended the former. It seems to me it'd
be easier to leave the computer accounts and group membership the same...

RE: Klez in attached html

2002-05-21 Thread Martin Blackstone

I have found with Scanmail it passes the HTML, but not the attachment.

A couple of quesitons. What do you mean wrong information store version?
What version SM? What version and SP are Exchange.

I was unaware of HFNetcheck, I'm going to look at that now

I've taken that PC off the network, and will remove it from that office when
I get there tomorrow

Scanmail is already set up to scan the message body (in MAPI mode? AVAPI is
not available - wrong version of info store) and has successfully stopped
Klez in the past by recognising attachments

Should that attachment be reaching the Outlook client? Or is it a failure
with IE on the client

Run HFNetcheck on the WS. Make sure it has the appropriate patches.

Setup your Scanmail to do message body scanning as well as attachment.

Reason I said that Jim is that this all happens at the point an identically
named file is received as an attachment thru our Exch server to his Outlook
client

As far as I'm aware the machine is fully up to date, both the virus
definitions on the exchange server and the desktop AV software, and the
updates to both Windows and IE6 as reported by windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Is the fauly likely to be with scanmail failing to notice the virus
attachment, or a problem with the client

"...Officescan flags up that there is a file in the users temp internet

Stop and read what you just wrote Niki. Why isn't adding *.htm and *.html
going to change a thing, if you add it to your e-mail scanning program?

I'll tell you why...because the "attempted" infection is not coming through
the e-mail system. Someone is connecting to the Internet and either getting
this from an infected web site, or they are reading their private e-mail
through a web browser. When this happens, the virus scanner on the desktop
catches the .exe file that is masquerading as an .html file and holds it in
the Temporary Internet Files folder, before it can execute. Depending on
how you have your desktop AV configured, it will either quarantine the file
after the person is through visiting that page, or it will delete it
entirely.

If you want to stop this kind of behaviour, you need to institute an AV
Gateway for all your web traffic, as well as your e-mail traffic. We use
NAV CE on all the servers and workstations, with the exception of the
Exchange servers, where we use NAV MSE. We have Qmail on our Mail Relay
server connected to the Internet. This does the initial subject type and
attachment type scanning. We also use NAV AV Gateway software to scan web
traffic.

I appreciate this is probably down to my misunderstanding of this virus, but
we have one user who is being sent an html file

As soon as the email is clicked on, the attachment is attempted to be opened
by Outlook. Then Officescan flags up that there is a file in the users temp
internet folder with Klez, and it is the same filename as the html
attachment, but the html has changed to exe

For instance, today he has an email with revisions1.html attached. When he
selects the email, it attempts to open the attachment, and Officescan
quarantines the file revisions1.exe from the temp internet folder.

I thought that Klez attachments had double extensions, like
revisions1.html.exe

Why wouldn't scanmail be stopping this file? I havent in the past considered
that we should be blocking htm and html, but should we?

I've checked this PC with Officescan and Symantecs tool, and it shows no
traces of Klez

Thanks

Nik

Also check file-level AV, NTFS compression, write-back caching, and
