An understanding of how SMTP works would tell you that the machine responsible for receiving mail for vtext.com (208.220.171.140) claims to have a problem with the sender's address. 99.9% of the time this is because the pointer record for your mail outbound mail server is not resolved by the receiving machine. -Original Message- From: David McSpadden [mailto:davidm;imcu.com] Sent: Friday, October 25, 2002 3:36 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Why is this coming up??? Haven't there been other exchange replacements in the past that tried and failed? Don't think one should talk about exchange replacements. Without looking at the page I bet it's a product running on Linux. Also.. there are other, competing products which provide almost the same functionality as Exchange does. If you're looking for a Linux based replacement for M$ products including Exchange then you might want to search for bill's server. Not sure if it can replace M$ Exchange completely. RE: Exchange a little slow but not for everyone
To be more correct, the server does not really push either. The server sends a UDP frame to the client telling it that it's time to refresh the view and show a new message. But they still call this process polling. In fact if Outlook is behind a firewall that blocks UDP frames, Outlook will never receive a new message notification from the server and will never refresh its view. For these occasions, there is an article on MS support website that describes how to adjust Outlook's polling intervals so that it would not even have to wait for the server's new mail notification UDP frame. -Original Message- From: Daniel Chenault [mailto:danielc;dc-resources.net] Sent: Friday, October 25, 2002 7:59 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Re: Exchange a little slow but not for everyone OL in Exchange mode does not poll. RE: Outlook startup - fast when profile is new, slow after that
Let me get back to you on WINS. I will test a few things on Monday in that respect. However, I am using HOSTS file on both clients to resolve the Exchange server's IP address. Client #1 connects immediately when creating new profile and checking the mailbox name. All subsequent connections are slow. Client #2 always connects fast. Both clients have Outlook 2000 but different builds. Client #1 has all the latest Outlook upgrades. I can see that Client #1 caches the Exchange server's name in the registry as if it were a domain controller (key dca740c8c042101ab4b908002b2fe182). Client #2 does not cache the Exchange server's name in this key. So I thought that this was a problem with different builds of Outlook 2000. I did not check to see if WINS client was enabled on both machines. To think of it, it is most likely enabled on Client #1, I will need to check on Monday. Maybe you are right, maybe WINS is interfering with name resolution on Client #1. I am chasing something that is causing Outlook to perform poorly. Can't quite figure it out. The environment: Exchange 2000 server. Outlook 2000. AD Domain controllers are not accessible to the clients, only the Exchange server can talk to the domain controllers. Exchange server is configured to not use RFR, all Outlooks are forced to use NSPI proxy. All the client PCs have an entry in their HOSTS file for the name and IP address of the Exchange server. When I create an Outlook profile from scratch and use it for the first time, Outlook starts immediately. However all the subsequent start-ups are slow. I always get a pop-up saying that the Exchange server is not available, Retry or Work offline. After I hit Retry, it connects fine. I have noticed that after the first connection, a key is created in the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\jkelly02\dca740c8c042101ab4b908002b2fe182 And it has string value 001e6602=exchange_server_name Now I have another PC with an earlier version of Outlook 2000 installed on it. That PC does not experience such problems. It always connects on the first try. I also noticed that the dca740c8c042101ab4b908002b2fe182 key exists on that PC but does not have any values. Is this an Outlook problem? Thanks! RE: Outlook startup - fast when profile is new, slow after that
Are both clients also using LMHOSTS files then? Make one and see what happens. But fixing DNS and WINS is better. Thanks! RE: Admin Groups
I would think it's more likely you'd have to use CDOEXM. But I don't know for sure. Thanks everyone. I will look into all three areas. I send to three different web enabled phones and of the three this is the only one that complains this way. The other two messaging.nextel.com and mobile.att.net receive their messages just fine. I just wanted to make sure my exchange was setup correctly. Thanks again. - Original Message - From: Ed Crowley [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Exchange Discussions [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, October 26, 2002 10:55 AM Subject: RE: Why is this coming up??? RE: Admin Groups
I know that the SDK has a piece of vbs that will create stores (mailbox and PF).. you might take a look there. (I used that code to write a perl script to mount/dismount dbs for me)... the file I used was called 'createstore.vbs' ttp://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/wss/wss/ _esdk_samples_createstore_navigating.asp jeff e. -Original Message- From: Ed Crowley [mailto:curspice;pacbell.net] Sent: Saturday, October 26, 2002 4:32 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Admin Groups I would think it's more likely you'd have to use CDOEXM.
