RE: Port 135 and Exchange Issue

2003-08-24 Thread Martin Blackstone
Hank, a VPN is going to be the solution you have to impliment. You are
correct about the ISP's. They are not going to open up 135 again. Even if
some do, most will not.
Let me ask a couple of questions.

How many users do you have?

What VPN solution were you testing?

What did you mean in the statement below? Are you saying that when someone
connected via VPN, they could not access the internet at the same time? If
so, try this (this is for XP or W2K):
After saving the VPN connection, right click on the VPN Connection and
Networking, Then the properites for TCP/IP, Click Advanced, and UNCHECK the
box that says Use Default Gateway. Save.

We have tried to implement a VPN solution, but now realize that unless we
run the connection on our client and have a full internet connection at the
same time, this will not work for us. We do not know how to do this. We
must have full access to the internet and exchange at the same time because
of the nature of our service we provide.

Any ideas?

Port 135 and Exchange Issue

2003-08-24 Thread Hank
We are trying to recover from ISPs closing down port 135. We have an
dedicated Exchange Server at a hosting company. 20 of our 23 people
scattered around the country can not use the full functionality of
Outlook/Exchange because of this problem.

We are a classic case study of how a company has suceeded in business by
using most of the functionality of Outlook/Exchange. We built our 3 year
old company's communications, task management, and database using the
Exchange Platform, including extensive use of custom 'forms' that track
hundreds of tasks and our workflow.

The ISP's closing out port 135 has brought us to our knees. We are
scambling just trying to stay on schedule with our committments to our
clients.

I have no hope that the ISPs will turn open up 135 again, so I also need an
alternative way to connect to the *full* functionality we had before, or be
forced to migrate completely off exchange and rebuild our entire
infrastructure using another platform.

We have tried to implement a VPN solution, but now realize that unless we
run the connection on our client and have a full internet connection at the
same time, this will not work for us. We do not know how to do this. We
must have full access to the internet and exchange at the same time because
of the nature of our service we provide.

Any ideas?

Hank

Has anyone applied the Blaster RPC patch to a W2k (SP3) Exch 2k (SP3)
machine? If so, how did it go?

Has anyone heard of any issues with Exchange 2000 and this patch?

Thanks.

RE: Quick question -- -domainprep and forestprep necessary for 2nd e2k server install?

2003-08-24 Thread Tom.Gray
Thanks for the answer!
Since the original server was an upgraded one there might have been
something slightly out of whack. I ran forestprep and then exchange
installed just fine. Seems to up and running now without any problems
-- I'm sure I'll find a way to muck it up!

Thanks again

This usually occurs when you run the install and are not one of the
accounts listed with "full exchange administrator" permissions. Right
click on the organization and choose delegate permissions. See what
account is listed and be sure you are using that account to do the
install.

Also, there is no need to run Forest/Domainprep if you are installing
into the same domain as your other exchange server. It will not hurt
anything if you do, though.

Hoping someone is around this weekend -

I've got a new server for Exchange 2000 and want to use the famous Ed
Crowley move method. This means I'm basically going to install E2k on
the new server and move the mailboxes.

Do I have to run ForestPrep and DomainPrep on the 2nd server? When I
try to run the Exchange 2000 install on the 2nd server (win2k sp4) I get
:

The component MS Exchange messaging and collaboration services cannot be
assigned the action upgrade because:

Setup has detected that the Exchange 5.5 site your server belongs to has
not replicated to the Active Directory yet. You can either wait for
replication to complete and try the upgrade again or upgrade a server
from a site that has already been replicated to the AD.

When I look this up at microsoft, Q283027 suggests I run forestprep and
domainprep.

Is this a good idea? Is this going to wreck/damage my existing Active
Directory stuff? I thought running forestprep and domainprep on the
first server did all the schema changes necessary...

Thanks

RE: Quick question -- -domainprep and forestprep necessary for 2nd e2k server install?

2003-08-24 Thread Andrew Chan
Well, is the error message suggesting the situation that you are in?
Are you trying to upgrade another Exchange 5.5 server in a different
site than your existing AD/E2K implementation? Usually, if you are
setting up the second E2K box into the same AD forest and same Domain as
the first E2K is in, then you don't need to run Forestprep or
domainprep.
