OT: Antigen

2003-09-24 Thread Crumbaker, Ron
We have recently installed Antigen on our Exchange 2k server.

I'm just wondering are most using ESE or VSAPI modes?

RE: AV/Spam scanning services

2003-08-05 Thread Crumbaker, Ron
I'm considering going with an outside SPAM/AV company.

However, my manager feels that we don't need to put AV on our Exchange
server if we do...so I am considering going just with AV/SPAM on our
Exchange server and keeping everything in house.

I was considering using MX Logic Defense Level 3 and using Antigen on
Exchange server.

I can't convince him that both would be the way to go...both meaning
SPAM/AV outside and AV on Exchange.

Now, I am considering just Antigen with the SPAM agent added to it.

Anyone got any good points about having both SPAM/AV outside and AV on
Exchange that I can bring up to my boss so he can see the added value?

His points were...you mean they won't be able to do it as well as we
can...then we need to not use them!

Thank you,

Ron Crumbaker, MCP

I see the outsourced AV as another layer that gives me greater defense
in depth (I have Trend on every platform). Also their use of multiple
and different AV scan engines gives me another (admittedly small) edge.
I'll take whatever edge I can get, having been hosed by Iluv you and
Funlove.

One of my concerns about using this type of service is latency. How much
longer does it take a message to get through? Are any of the vendors
better or worse in this regard?

My point is that you're spending money on an internal AV product for
mail (i.e. ScanMail or Antigen) plus the second layer at the gateway -
either internal or external. My caution is geared towards those who
think that they ONLY need the outsourcer for AV.

It's not necessarily about saving money though right? Scanning at the
gateway (in-house or outsourced) can be a valid additional level of
protection. A significant number of our customers use some form of
gateway scanner[1] in addition to their server and desktop based AV
 solutions.

There are some discussions of a few of them in the archives.

Personally, I'm not a fan of outsourced anti-spam, but
 that's in part
because we're a heavily email dependent company and so we
 can justify the
expense of in house measures to combat those issues.

As a side note - outsourced antivirus doesn't save money -
 you still need to
have an inhouse AV product for email, because scanning at
 the gateway isn't
  enough.

am very pleased that they have joined MEC and Tech-Ed together, working

I was getting ready to start swapping each year, now I don't have to.
While the rooms were packed I thought the content was very good, how did
it compare to the content of the past MEC's.

Mailbox Group

I'm needing to setup a support type mailbox that when email is sent to
it, it will be delivered to a group of users here. I know I can setup a
Group and have the address sent to those members.

They would also like an auto-response sent to the sender stating that we
have received their request and someone will get back to them within 48
hours.

Is this possible?

I had the same problem yesterday with one of my POP3 accounts - it turns
out the ISP had deactivated the account for non-usage as I was accessing
it via a broadband connection through another ISP, and not using the
email provider's dialup access. I reactivated my account via their
webpages and all was fine.

Does the ISP have webmail access - if so try this and ensure the account
is active, and the password hasn't been changed

Email Limits

2002-05-24 Thread Crumbaker, Ron

OK, I need some help. I have been looking for a setting in Exchange 2k,
and I can't seem to find it.

I am looking for the setting that limits the number of mail one person
can send out to another single mailbox.

What I am trying to do:

My HR Department posted a job online and have gotten a lot of
responses through emails to one mailbox.
He is wanting to forward 1/3 of the mail two other mailboxes so he
doesn't have to screen all the emails himself.

However, when I created a rule in Outlook to forward the mail to the
other mailboxes, it is only sending out 20.

I want to send out 200 from one mailbox to the other mailbox.

Or, if you have another solution that will work for me, I am open for
suggestions.

If it's attachments, try Q300904.

If it's attachments, try Q300904.

Its about 75% faster.
Every little bit helps.
Still not as fast as OK2000 was on this XP box, but much better than

Permission to send the message?

2002-02-07 Thread Crumbaker, Ron

Exchange 2000 SP1. Microsoft Outlook 2000 SR1a Clients.

I have a hidden mailbox called NDR. This is where I send all
undeliverable mail, ones that aren't address correctly and what nots.

I have it set up so that I can access this mailbox and look that all the
undeliverable mail. When I open the mail and do a Send again, it gives
me the option to correct the email addressee, but if I try to put the
address of the sender in the Resend From folder I get the following
error:

You do not have the permission to send the message on behalf of
the specified

user.

How can I get this taken changed, or where I can put from the NDR rather
than, this message was was sent from my mailbox. I don't want to
unhide the mailbox ndr unless I have to.

If I do have to unhide that mailbox, can I set it so that no one can
email to it without effecting the undeliverable? If so, what settings
do I need to set.

Fill in the From line with the name of the NDR mailbox. For example,
when I
forward mail it always comes from internet mail. You can also use
postmaster or whatever.

Subject: Permission to send the message?

Thank you,

Ron Crumbaker, MCP

Can you not use the SMTP address of the mailbox (which resolves even to
hidden mailboxes)?

Fill in the From line with the name of the NDR mailbox. For example,
when I
forward mail it always comes from internet mail. You can also use
postmaster or whatever.

Okay, ESM. SMTP virtual server. Properties Messages Copies of NDR
to:

Now open that mailbox in Outlook. You'll see all your undeliverables,
showing as simply could not be reached. Preview pane doesn't show the
message or anything. OPEN the message. You'll see a button that says
send again. This will expose the message.

OK, me and mis-communication...what I want is those pesky
emails that someone tries to send to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] which IS A BAD ADDRESS. I get the
report, but in 5.5 I used to also get the email attached, but
 in E2K I don't, so I can't open it up and send it :)

How do I go about getting those again?

Your user has a setting that is screwing things up. Regardless of what
your

You're sending out mail with RTF codes. This gets encoded into TNEF and
very
few (vanishingly few) 3rd-party mail clients can unravel it. The setting
is
in the IMC (forget the exact location).

RE: Typical Settings

2001-11-13 Thread Crumbaker, Ron

That is what I am trying to find out.

I had someone point this out to me and now I see that Everyone is in
there. However, when I try to remove it, it says it is inherited from
the parent. I can't seem to remove it...if I remove it, will the users
still have access to their mailboxes, or do I need to add them each to
their own mailbox?

Thank you,

mdbdata files?

2001-10-22 Thread Crumbaker, Ron

I am having this directory fill up with log files. Are these log files
able to be deleted?
The dates range from 8/12/2001 to 10/22/01
There are 6.9 Gig worth of log files.

Is there anything I need to do to prevent this?

RE: MEC

2001-09-25 Thread Crumbaker, Ron

Yes. Still on.
Here is what I got from them:
September 11 was a day of shock and sadness for people around the world.
Our hearts go out to all those who have been affected by this terrible
tragedy.

As you know, President Bush and other global and national leaders urged
that the business and economic activities of this nation and the global
economy must continue, even as we all work together to address the
terrible human costs of the September 11th tragedy. The reopening of
the financial markets is just one step in resuming the economic
activities of our nation. After long consideration, we have decided to
move forward with the MEC 2001 in Orlando, Florida, on September 30th
through October 4th as scheduled.

Based on input from travel industry and government officials, we
strongly believe that national and international air transportation,
hotels and other support services will be fully operational before the
MEC 2001 conference opens. All MEC 2001 keynotes, sessions, functions
and special events will take place as scheduled. We are working closely
with state and local authorities to ensure every possible security
measure is in place.

All of us at Microsoft are keeping the victims of this tragedy in our
thoughts and prayers. We hope to see you in Orlando as we carry on our
lives full of pride in our values and our country.

We are trying to do a move mailbox upgrade.
our current system is windows 2000 with exchange 5.5
we have a new system with windows 2000 and we installed exchange 2000 in
the
prescribed manner for the move mailbox method.

on the new server we did
forestprep
domainprep
installed adc
installed exchange 2000.
now the new server does not see any logons or mailboxes of our users.
they show up in AD users and groups but not in exchange system manager.

and when I try to move mail box on the new server all that shows up in
the exchange
tasks is
create mailbox
establish e-mail address
enable IM.

and on the old server all that shows up is
delete mailbox.

When I create a mailbox on new machine
I can login to it but messages are sent to NDR (non deliverable).

I am at a loss as to why this is happening
should I uninstall and try again???

RE: Help with Undeliverable

2001-08-14 Thread Crumbaker, Ron

The new exchange server was installed in our domain.
Our Exchange 5.5 server was OFF the network, in a closest. Never
brought online during or since the installation of 2000.

Our new Org Name is MPDINC on E2K.
ForestPrep and DomainPrep was ran on the E2k machine.

Thank you,

I really thought the comma was an invalid character for an E2K org
name[1]... Did someone use your production AD for testing of E2K betas
at
any point? The only way I could see that not generating an error during
Exchange setup would be if someone had run forestprep and/or domainprep
with
a version of E2K prior to RC2.

Did this ever work? When and how was this new Exchange 2000 install
completed exactly?

[1]So I double checked, and it is... Q289671.

The comma was from the old 55 setup.

Yes, it happens on all replies of anyone internal to our system.

 in E2K
Interesting. Is this a server added to an existing organization or a
pristine E2K install? How was the original message addressed? Is this
 happening with all replies?

I installed a New Exchange 2000 and now when someone replies to an
  internal email we are getting

  Undeliverable
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

The following recipients(s) could not reached:
  /0=MPD, Inc./OU=Domain1/CN=Recipients/CN=User_Name on 8/14/2001
The email address could not be found. Perhaps the recipient
moved to a different e-mail organization, or there was a
  mistake in the
address. Check the address and try again.
  exchange.ourdomainname.com #5.1.0

Any suggestions on how to add this in Exchange 2000.
