RE: Detect unauthorized access to mailbox by administrator
The only way I know of is to increase the logging for the info store to medium and then look for event 1016 in the application log on the exchange server. This is generated every time an account accesses a mailbox that is not its primary mailbox. No amount of permission granting will stop it from being generated. You can also look in the Exchange properties for the server mailboxes to see who last logged on to a particular mailbox. You could also look in the person's File, Open in Outlook and see if another mailbox is in the recently accessed list. Either way you will need to access the Exchange server or the user's local Outlook. If wrong doing is suspected, it is appropriate for the CEO to order an audit of operations and see what comes up. I'm not aware of any auditing tools that would not require at least minimal access to the user's logon and workstation or the exchange server. RE: Greg's Utterly Fascinating Views on Ethics
Sort of. There are no well documented criteria that you apply for and then meet, there are informal criteria that leads to an invitation. As I said, others must decide whether the criteria meet the expertise they are looking for. That does not make it unethical, as you know. I seriously doubt any customer will give you a blank check simply based on being an MVP, but I know I can have a higher degree of trust for the info (usually) a MVP provides in lists like this. RE: Rumour - Spammers control "New mail desktop alert" ?
It is perception sometimes, particularly if this was related to your boss by someone else. Anyway, it is possible for the new mail alert to stay up longer than normal depending on where mouse focus last was. Additionally, since it is a link to the email, it is normal behavior for the cursor to change. It is possible that it was being described "and the cursor changed to a click me hand icon" as opposed to the pop up had a hand in it and said click me? The story goes that a piece of Spam was received in the Inbox, and a "New Mail Desktop Alert" (the little transparent email preview that apears above the system tray). Happens all the time, except this time it was different. The preview stayed for at least a minute, and displayed a "hand" icon and a "Click Me" message. Neither of these were evident in the mail message. Is it possible that this feature could be under pogrammatic control by the bad guys? Anyone else seen anything weird like this? RE: High Availability Exchange 2000
It is not all it is cracked up to be. The VSS support in BE9, build 4454 (the only one that supports it), is very unreliable. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. Especially with a Win2k3 domain controller. Does not cause any damage, just does not always query the writer properly and therefore fails to backup. I'm not sure it works with Exchange 2003 on the live database, I did not see it in the Shadow Copy items that can be backed up on our test server. It does work on a SQL database though. RE: Monitor Email content
In some states of the US that is true. In others you must provide due notice. In some cases even a logon warning is recommended. Otherwise the company can be liable for civil action. Email does not actually fall in to the wiretapping statutes, I don't think anyway. For wiretapping, it is different. In fact, in some states, even cameras and "baby monitors" can be used with no notice. The defining rule on that is whether it is recorded or not. If it is not recorded, it does not fall in to the wiretap or communications laws. RE: Virus Notifications to Sender?
It happens. We get an administrative alert and deal with it. The best way for us to always know is the administrative alert, not the sender notification. No auto sender notification from outside is needed or will be forthcoming, because it doesn't make it outside, assuming our AV is working as well as anyone else's. The latter is up to our QC methods. Even if the internal sender got an auto sender notification, rarely would that benefit us, the people who must deal with it. 80% of them would not understand it and delete it without telling anyone. We never see it, so it serves no useful purpose. On the other hand, if an infected email did make it out and someone confirmed it came from here and sent a notification that clearly came from a person who confirmed, it will tend to command more attention. It will provide useful information to IT to deal with it and give a destination to respond to. For those emails we receive that are likely to have a traceable source, we might spend 2 minutes collecting that info and sending out a notification that explains the confirmation of source. For those Trojans that are known to spoof, we don't bother. The flip side is if one is received by one of our users and they react to it and call us, we must scope out the notice, confirm it is not legitimate, allay the fears of the user (who now believes someone is "stealing" their email address) and in most cases do a full scan of their system to help them feel safe. We now took them out of service during the scan and tied up an IT person. Most of the time that user will call us every time the printer skips a page for the next 2 weeks because they are afraid they might have a virus despite our best efforts. They also now wonder if someone is watching them (the same person who "stole" their email address). And so on. So the latter has consumed potentially hours of our time. Why? Because someone did not want to take 2 minutes of their time to filter through the incoming virus alerts and preferred to let an auto-generated notice consume our time instead. Again, that is the Netiquette part I was referring to. Oh, and guess what! The auto notification is one of the factors that lead to DoS conditions when these things really proliferate. You have doubled the traffic on your email server during a heavy load condition. And you have contributed to the same condition on someone else's server. Our IT is under staffed and under funded, like most. I know how it feels to cause someone to have to consume extra time and money that is in short supply, I care not to do that to someone else. Kind of an IT Golden Rule as it were. While it would be nice to sit in a closed and insulated environment and never have to worry about anyone on the outside, the use of the Internet makes that not doable. I certainly beat this to death, all I will have to say on it. I am unlikely to alter my hard coded work ethic on this type of thing, unlikely to alter the hard coded work ethic of someone else on this kind of thing. :-) Best Regards, Dan Bartley -Original Message- From: Roger Seielstad [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2003 12:27 To: Exchange Discussions Here's the problem with not performing sender notifications: What if your user is the sender? RE: Virus Notifications to Sender?
We don't send sender notifications. It is bad Netiquette in the current Trojan environment. It is bad for email lists, it is bad for IT departments and it is bad for individual users. However, we do look at the recipient and administrative notifications. If it is klez, sobig, etc. we pretty much ignore it. If it is something else we look at the headers and see if we can trace it. Ah, but "Don't send me viruses and I won't send you those notifications in the first place." is the flaw. They did not send you the virus. They mearly were member of some distribution list, had their e-mail on a web site, or corrisponded with the person that was actually infected. Unfortunatly, in your desire to 'assist' those that have no technical ability(A noble cause), you send many messages to people who have done you no wrong. 99 out of 100 times your sending someone a message that indicates that they are infected. This causes any responsible person to panic, scan their system, and find nothing. In the end this has as much or more 'cost' as most of the viruses put together. There is nothing wrong with sending the message if you are 99% sure the from or reply address is correct, but otherwise, your risking offending people and causing increases in costs for other companies and individuals. Here are a couple of possible situations that currently can happen. 1 : The CEO of your company is the member of a Senior Executive group and they have a mailing list. Someone who is infected visits the web site for the group, which has the posting e-mail list on it. You receive a infected message to someone inside your network. Your system replys with the 'Your Infected' e-mail. Your CEO gets a copy. He has his favorite computer savvy family member check his computer. The family member says that the computer is fine and that the message was incorrect. The CEO is displeased at the wasted time trying to fix a unknown problem. You get a memo the next day, one that I doubt would be plesant. 2 : Assume that your company values corprate relations. Some random person is infected with one of these spoofing viruses. They had visited the web site for a company that your company values in the corprate relationship sense. Note that the value could be any number of things. The other companies web site had a sales or management e-mail address for contacting them. This random person sends to you the virus with the other companies list address. You will be sending a message that WILL cause the other company expense and frustration. That WILL damage relationships with that company. Will it break them, probibly not, but you can not say with 100% certainty that it will not. Yes, the other company could have had a virus of the non-spoofing kind, but your job is to protect your computers first, and I assume you have done that or this conversation would not be happening. So it costs you nothing if they send you a virus short of the continued maintence costs for the software. Which you will have to spend anyway as there will always be > 0 viruses in the wild. Responding that they have a virus in the case of a non-spoofing virus is fine, few would argue that it is not fair. However, the problem is that now the viruses are lieing about where they came from, so the increadbly simple rules of the past are no longer just or safe for our carears. What we need to do is get the mail monitor product vendors to get some smarts and add the ability to suppress mail back in the case of a spoofing virus. That way you could continue to crusade to end viruses and not risk anything. Untill then, I disagree with punishing innocent people and letting the criminal go free. - Michael - -Original Message- From: Christopher Hummert [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2003 11:14 AM To: Exchange Discussions For us the 1% just happened to be one o
RE: Virus Notifications to Sender?
We leave them off. The majority of today's virus' and Trojans are not from who they say they are. If we see one that is legitimate on the From address we will send a note separately. Notifying the sender when they weren't the sender doesn't really help them know their email was hijacked. They can't use the notice to track down who really sent it so it usually just agitates the person. We do leave admin notification on though. It is also nice for not email bombing a list someone might subscribe to, such as a security list where people send sample code that is often identified by most scanners as an active code. RE: Windows 2000 vpn
Is this everyone or just some. Is WINS being used? One of the increasingly common problems for me has been private side networks on DSL and Cable connections. Many networks are set up to use default private IP space. Many routers and cable/dsl modems do the same. As a result the private side of the DSL/Cable is using the same address space as the Exchange network. Therefore just a little routing confusion on the client side develops. It usually shows when trying to reach an Exchange server before anywhere else. Just a possibility. I've actually had almost half my VPN routing issues turn out to be this. OWA Contacts Public Folder problem
It seems that if we do a Find from OWA, E2k, SP2 in a Contacts Public Folder it only searches fields until it finds an entry and then stops searching on that contact. SharePoint 2001 E2k Public Folder content indexing has the same problem, but that makes sense since it uses the OWA to index it. Specifically, if there is a first and last name entered as well as a company name and you search for the company name, it will not find the contact. It will only find it if you search on the first or last name entered. If there is no name entered it will find the contact based on company name. Has anyone encountered this? Is there a way around it? RE: VPN breaks Outlook
Not sure what the all the talk of take out the firewall is about. If it is via VPN, then you must have that open already. If not, it depends on what VPN you are using as to what ports you might need. After that it is just a matter of having the VPN server properly configured to hand the info to clients needed to see the machines on the network. Easiest is to set up a WINS server for VPN client use. Since it is via VPN you DO NOT have to open any NetBIOS ports or remove any firewall. I'm not sure why anyone would be recommending that. RE: McAfee GroupShield 5.2
I could not let this one pass. For the record, you better take a closer look at how you have installed Exchange and GroupShield and how things are managed in your network. Particularly if your description below is accurate. First off, why isn't your boot.ini read only? It is supposed to be. Second, why isn't your OS defaulting to the c:\winnt if the boot.ini can not be found, it is supposed to. Perhaps you installed to a non-default directory, that would be a good reason. Third, I've been using GroupShield 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2 on numerous systems at several companies. Updates have failed many times and I have encountered many different annoying bugs, but never has it done even close to what you described below. Before you start making software changes and decisions, I suggest you re-evaluate your current management models and trouble shooting techniques first. Sorry for the terse tone, but there are many people new to this area reading these posts, and wild, irresponsible statements like below do not help others develop a professional edge. As far as what is best, as Andy David said, use what works for you. It all comes down to preferences on bugs and features. None of them are perfect, everyone has a different experience for each one. RE: Product Support Services - Microsoft Security Bulletin -MS02 -025
In my case I did apply to a test server first. I got could not stop msexchangesa and could not restart iisadmin services. Not a problem, I stopped the Exchange services manually, it requires a reboot anyway so restarting at time of install is not important. I've had similar services stopping and starting issues with every Exchange patch for E2k. That's why I test first. So far, 4 hours into it, no performance problems or loss of services on the test box. That's the important part. If it continues to be ok under load then I will apply it to a production server, after stopping all services manually first (something I learned to do as far back as 4.0). The important part is that I know what to expect when I apply the patch in production and that makes for a smooth transition and minimum downtime. RE: MOM - Microsoft Operations Manager
Depends on whether you have the Application Pack. Just MOM alone will do nothing for you with Ex5.5. It will monitor the Win2k OS out of the box. The agent is well behaved in 99% of the environments. I haven't tried against Ex5.5, but it can have some issues with certain report scripts on E2k with App Pack. It does not bring the box down in one test arena, it just does not function consistently with the mailbox needed for Exchange reporting functions. I regularly have to restart the agent service to get a script to complete on one test arena. In another, it just won't work with the mailbox most of the time, no matter what I do. This is with the App Pack. It works fine on the OS, SQL, etc. In one of the test arenas, the WMI service regularly runs away with the CPU, due directly to the failure of the Exchange scripts. In the other one, it does not, it just fails to complete the scripts without restarting the agent. The biggest thing about MOM is to be sure you assign computer groups to the rule sets, or you'll get nothing, and be very careful what you decide to pull from the logs and scripts. The database will get very large, very quickly. RE: Requesting Data from Microsoft Exchange server
My experience has been there is always a reason for this. It has varied. Sometimes it is network latency problems on the client, sometimes a bad switch or hub. On the old Exchange server it was because of the topology of the dual domain causing latency in passing the communication between them. It was never the server itself except once when it was down. I would be looking at the above possibilities before the server. Even if you get rid of the message people are going to experience delays in getting the data they are trying to access in Outlook. It is still requesting data from the server slow enough for that message, even if you don't see the message. In my case it has most often been a switch acting up. One little caveat though, upgrade ESM to SP2 before upgrading the adminpak to beta 3. Otherwise, the same problem. Yes, that is a fine option, but not always the most convenient in all circumstances (this could just be one of those preference areas). Perhaps she used the same login info as her domain account and has the Internet Options set to see the site as Intranet? Normally, OWA will not prompt if you logged on to the desktop with the same account info as the account that owns the mailbox and the browser views the site as an Intranet location. Morning, I have an interesting dilemma. Running E2k. One of my employees recently redid her home computer. Now when she goes to check her email from home using OWA, she is not prompted for username / password - it takes her straight to her inbox. She has DSL/Cable. I thought perhaps she had 'saved' her username and password, but on my home computer, the login box still appears - just filled out. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. If you checks her email at a different machine - she is prompted. RE: Policing the Police
I don't see the 1016 anymore in E2k. It makes a security log entry for failed object access instead. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult to monitor as many things cause a failed object access, with the same Event ID. Did I miss a setting somewhere that restores the 1016 entry in the application log or is it just gone now? IM 4.5 for Exchange?
Has anyone heard anything about a timetable for release of IM client 4.5 for Exchange? The Windows update site has a link and paragraph about the Exchange version, but it takes you to the 3.5 version download page. Thanks for any info. RE: Instant Messenger
4.5 is not yet supported for an E2k configuration. Although the XP Windows update site supplies a link for a 4.5 Exchange version, it goes to the 3.5 version page. The 4.0 version that installs with XP will only work if you are upgrading a Win2k machine that already had the Exchange version installed. Having it on the same server as E2k can be problematic. There is an update that can be had from PSS, no charge, that resolves some of the authentication problems with AD with a same server setup. The best solution is to run the IM from another server.
