RE: Server capacity

I think you can still buy external storage from HP/Compaq

With RAM prices where they are, I don't think it should be a problem getting
that upgraded.

I'm concerned about storage capacity. I have 7 hot swap bays, and given the
age of the 4.3 drives, I want to make sure that we're very redundant. To do
this, I've decided that we need a hot spare for every configured drive. If I
go with RAID 1 for the swap and logs, I'll need three disks for that, which
only leaves me 4 disks for RAID 5, which, with a hot spare, gives me about 9
gigs for mailboxes. We do a lot of publishing, so large files are the norm,
and I think 9 gigs will be burned through pretty quickly. If I was to
upgrade to 1 gig of RAM, that should take care of a lot of the swap
performance problems. Will having the E2k log on a RAID 5 volume make a
large difference, or is it more of a performance tweak?

Thanks,
Erick

Subject: Sybari Antigen Problems with Exchange 5.5

Has anyone had problem with Antigen hanging Outlook on the client side and
if so, what was the fix?

I recently installed Antigen 7.0 SP1 on 13 servers. Three out of 13 servers
are having performance issues such as taking more than a minute or more to
send a simple message (with or without an attachment) within the same site,
or to move a message from one folder to another.

I'm running Exchange 5.5 SP4 on Windows NT 4.0
My priv.edb size is 50GB
There are 1500 mailboxes on the mail servers that are having problems.

Any help would be appreciated.

What I am looking for are mailboxes like a helpdesk mailbox that multiple
people have access to. I need to identify these mailboxes before we
migrate. I have done every type of directory export that I can find and am
not finding any properties that would help identify.

Mr. Hatley, actually the publicDelegates lists who had delegate rights
to the mailbox...same as whomever is listed under options->delegates in
Outlook. I don't believe this attribute will list those people that
have been granted permissions outside the scope of delegate (like owner
via properties of mailbox->permissions inside the outlook client).

See KB article 251390. According to what I've found in MSDN, you can
get the Assoc-NT-Account, or primary Windows NT account, using ADSI, but
not other accounts that might have permissions on a mailbox.

LDSU (from HP/Compaq and I have worked with someone who wrote that

Subject: Problems with ADC Public Folder CA...

Hi folks:

I am re-posting this. I sent it several hours ago, but it never
arrived. I have configured a PF CA between an Exchange 5.5 server and
the Active Directory. The user account I am using on the Exchange 5.5
side is the service account. The account to Windows is a member of
Domain Admins. The other CA's for recipients, DLs, and custom
recipients work just fine.

W2K SP3 on all servers
E2K SP3 and the E2K SP3 version of the ADC
E2K is in "mixed mode"
AD (only one domain) is in "native mode"
Only 1 E2K server currently installed

When the ADC PF CA runs, none of the folders are showing up in the
domain's Microsoft Exchange System Objects container. I can see the
public folders from Exchange 5.5 in Exchange System Manager in the
Public Folders container, but they are not "mail-enabled".

In event viewer, I see errors when the PF CA runs. The event ids
are 8183 and 8270. Both of these errors indicate a problem with the
account used by the ADC to connect to the Exchange 5.5 server. But the
errors only display for system folders, not the regular public folders.
However, the regular public folder directory information is NOT
replicating to AD from 5.5. KB article 329047 suggests that the account
has insufficient permissions, but it already has Service Account Admin
on 5.5. Just for grins, we tried changing the account we were using to
an account with just Permissions Admin. No dice. There are no errors
that would indicate why we are not seeing the public folders in
Microsoft Exchange System Objects.

Any ideas? I'm tapped out. I have done a KB search, a Google
search and looked through the list archives, but nothing seems relevant.

Thanks!

Jim

RE: Scnmail 3.8 or 3.52?

Very interesting.this sounds more like "outdated" materials. This
sounds more like Scanmail 1.0 where ESE scanning was overlooked (other than
Sybari).

Subject: Scnmail 3.8 or 3.52?

I asked a couple of days ago on the official stance on which is "best"
between Scanmail for Exchange 3.52 and 3.8 - this is the reply my vendor
came back with (Trend don't provide direct support in the UK any more).

I've read the readme's, and the comparison document on the Trend website and
it's six of one, half a dozen of the other - what are you guys that use
Scanmail running?

Have to say I've had no problems with Trend in the three years I've been
using them, so I've no reason to believe one version will cause more
problems than the other.

regards
Paul

Subject: RE: Scanmail Question

I'd advise using ScanMail 3.52 (AVAPI/MAPI) due to the following limitations
posed by the ESE API version (extracted from the readme.txt for ScanMail
version 3.8 (ESE API):

4. Known Issues

Trend Micro provides a free, online database called "SolutionBank",
which provides answers to common questions, at:

http://solutionbank.antivirus.com/solutions

You can find this free resource under "Knowledge Base". After signing up,
under Knowledge Base in the left navigator pane, select "Search
Solutions". The contents of SolutionBank are being continuously updated,
and new solutions are added daily. SolutionBank has the latest questions
and answers.

   1. Real-time Scan cannot send virus notification to recipients in the
bcc: field using SMTP. "Undisclosed-Recipients" will be shown in
  the Real-time Scan Monitor.

   2. ScanMail only reports one virus in multiple virus-infected documents
and when multiple viruses are found in compressed files.

   3. Outgoing SMTP mail will not be scanned since it does not go through
  the Information Store.

   4. Real-time Scan zip file cleaning is not supported in this version.

   5. "Move" action will not work if the infected message is in the
  Outlook 2000 Calendar.

   6. ScanMail gets sender and recipient information from the message
body instead of the SMTP header. If the user fakes the From: and To:
field information, ScanMail will use the fake information to send
notication and in saving to the log file.

   7. POP3 or IMAP4 clients will display the original infected file name,
even when the infected file is moved or deleted.

   8. In an environment where an infected message is sent from a
non-English Server to an English Server, message properties such
as the sender may appear as unreadable characters. This effect
will only be evident in logging, reporting, and notification.
Any virus found will be still be removed.

   9. User must select the "All users begin with common application
settings" option when installing SMEX 3.8 to a Windows NT 4.0
  Terminal Server.

I sincerely hope this helps.

Should you require any further assistance, then please don't hesitate in
contacting me on the details provided below.

Best regards,

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to search an Exchange 2000 database
for a particular text string(s)? I need to extract all messages meeting
a certain criteria.

We use Promodag for reporting basic email usage, but this will not
search the message body.

TIA,

Exmerge will not help nor this Q article. He wants to search the message
body. The others mentioned only scan subject text and attachment name. I
haven't tried it yet but you might want to look at Ontracks new tools.
Although it may only do as Exmerge and IISscan do.
