Subject: Domain used by Spammers

For the last few weeks I have been plagued by what I had originally
considered to be spam attacks. These were showing up as NDR's which I have
forwarded to my own mailbox for review. They were always some nonexistent
random alphanumeric user i.e. [EMAIL PROTECTED]
. This morning I had over one hundred of them
so decided to investigate further and see if there was way to screen them
out.

As it turns out, these are not emails being sent to me, but rather someone
is spamming using these random alphanumeric in the From field and the NDR's
are coming back to me from whoever is in the To field.

I re-tested my own exchange server to ensure that they were not relaying of
the Exchange server. I then telneted to my personal attbi.com mail server
and sent and email as a nonexistent user in my domain to a bogus mail
address. The attbi.com server promptly sent back and NDR to my domain.

I concerned about any implications of getting on any RBL lists. I guess I
would equate this to identity theft but have no how to address this serious
issue.

Thanks

RE: Odd Client Behavior

2003-02-05 Thread Johnny Martinez
Hi Ed,
It's not workstation specific. I tried setting him up on another system and
it did the same thing. Even something as simple as selecting a read email in
his Inbox and marking it as unread lags a few seconds.

He did mention that it might have started happening at the same time I
reinstalled OWA and SP4 but I don't see why it would effect only his
mailbox.

The answer was with the Public Folders, no sooner had I written "tried every

It was a sysadmin folder with an alias of [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Gurus, I am experiencing a weird problem with our Sysadmin Account. I was
trying to send e-mail from an external address and it was giving an NDR that
did not help. I have deleted this account and tried to recreate it but it
will not give me the original SMTP address. When I try creating the
[EMAIL PROTECTED] SMTP it claims it already exists.

I have followed the KB280765 telling me to go through system manager,
recipents, All Address Lists etc. but I do not find the address having tried
every such criteria.

Any ideas why I can not create the address seeing as Exchange doesn't agree
with itself?

Any Exchange-connected fax product can receive faxes and forward them to a
designated Exchange mailbox. I don't know if WinFax Pro has this ability or
not.

We use Faxination (www.faxination.com). GFI's Faxmaker would work also and
is probably less expensive. With each you also have the ability to send
faxes from client machines. That may not be one of your requirements but it
is an significant productivity booster. I have Visioneer Strobe scanners on
each desktop and being able to scan and send saves a lot of time for the
users. All sending and receiving is handled through Outlook.

We receive a low volume of faxes and send even less. I am interested in

their PC. Ideally, I would like to find an appliance that could do this for
us... Receive a fax and forward it to a single email address.

If anyone has ever seen such a device or you have any other suggestions,
please let me know.

RE: Repeated attempts to log into IIS - SSL & OWA

2003-01-29 Thread Johnny Martinez
Here are two KB articles that I managed to find:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;234022

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;218445

It is a ridiculous process and I recommend doing it on a test server first.
I'm sure their are better walkthroughs written by non-M$ people. That is why
I asked on this forum. Worst case is that you have to remove the certs and
reinstall OWA. I wasn't able to get the cert going after a couple tries and
ran out of time. I intend to revisit it soon though.

The guy that set this all up has moved on. He explained it to me - you just
run the wizard and grant yourself a cert. I am thinking that the user could
install the cert to their local machine and they would not get the security
alert (until it expired - maybe you can make it for more than a year).

It is all on the NT4 option pack (IIS, MS Certificate server, Key Manager).
After you install OWA, **I think** you go to the IIS Exchange website and
require secure communications and run Key Manager and then somehow associate
the Certificate with the IIS website.

This error usually has to do with MAC users. Have them save the file to
their hard drive using the 8.3 format. Then have them attach the file and
send it. There is a knowledge base article on this but I can't find it now.

That apache.org post was a subtle anti M$ jab I think hhehe

I saw a report the other day that apache has like 66% of the market and IIS
33%.

Download it? Just add it in the Add/Remove programs Control Panel applet. It
should be in the Windows options. You will probably need your NT CDROM. Make
sure you get all the windows updates after you do it.

Make sure OWA isn't already up. http://servername/exchange

If it's not, then find your Exchange install CD and run the installer, OWA
is in there via a check box.

We are on Exchange 5.5 with NT4 but we are not running OWA. I am thinking
about installing OWA so the user can check e-mail from home. Can someone
show me where to start? and personal experience during installation of OWA.

RE: Block Attachments

2003-01-08 Thread Johnny Martinez
Antigen is great. It's not a single av engine, it uses like six including
Norton. The support is great too. I've gotten no more than a one day turn
around on my randomly submitted email questions.

You can block by extension. Your blocked list depeneds mainly on your type
of biz. If you're a software dev org then you'll find that this list will be
barren. Most orgs block .vbs, .exe, .bat, .scr, and .hta

Antigen also attempts scanning files inside archives like .zips.

You should learn the difference between a file based av product vs. Exchange
based. Antigen is Exchange based.

You will need an Exchange based Antivirus program or content filter to do
this.
Do you have one? What do you have? Perhaps someone could help you further

Forgive me for asking. I'm sure this has been covered many times but I

Hi all,
Is it normal for the bengine.exe to be taking 50% CPU usage when no backups
are running?

I could be wrong, but I don't think there's any way to convert them. I
think you'll have to create new forms in Outlook and just try to duplicate
the look & feel.

Creating Outlook forms

2002-11-26 Thread Johnny Martinez
Hi all,
I have a couple of forms that I want to convert to Outlook forms but have
never done this. Can you point me to any online resources for this? Ex. I
have a new hire notification form that goes out to certain people (in paper
form.) I would like to make this an Outlook form and have it use Exchange
(eliminating the paper.)

Thanks in advance!

Are you using it in AVAPI mode?

I have used Norton AV for Exchange and liked it alot. What don't you like?
It's easily configurable via a webbased UI and you can set it to update very
often.

The company I am at now is using Antigen which uses like six different AV
scanners in one suite. The configuration interface isn't as simple as Norton
AV for Exchange but it's no big deal once you get a little face time with
it.

I would recommend Antigen because of the multi AV scanners though. One thing
I don't like is that it isn't able to report the intended recipients of
viruses because it scans/cleans before it gets that far. This is good though
but I would like the extra info on who the intended recipient was.

RE: Antivirus software for exchange.

2002-11-15 Thread Johnny Martinez
I have Antigen scanning Exchange and NAVCE scanning the file system too. If
you do this make sure you don't scan the Exchange files!!! To get a step
further on what Jeffrey was saying, what if NAVCE scans the MDBDATA, thinks
it's infected and quaratines it? You're screwed. Remember: Don't scan
Exchange in the filesystem.

Alexander -

You are very fortunate as Symantec does not support the Corporate
Edition scanning Exchange. They require the actual NAV for Microsoft
Exchange. As per Document ID:2000110108382448 , they suggest excluding
the specific directories.

I had an instance where a customer did a network scan of the M drive
that hosed recurring calendar items. Unfortunately they had to be
restored from backup - not much fun! See Document ID:2002021311592148

I don't have Norton integrated into Exchange on my server, I just have
the corporate edition running real-time scanning on the server, on every
file. It seems to produce almost no overhead (to my surprise), and it
catches and strips viruses from messages without fail, so far (2 years).
