Subject: Client Not connecting on reboot of Exchange 5.5 server

Hey ya all, this is really weird,

Had to reinstall the imc on Monday and asked everyone to log off which
this particular client says he did but after the server came up Outlook is
very sluggish in starting or will not start at all, get either the retry,
work offline, or cancel dialog box or the Requesting Data from the
Exchange Server dialog box then it might open. Also some of the client
machines have been getting the Requesting data from Microsoft Exchange
window but very infrequently.

Have 10 servers running Exchange 5.5 sp4 on nt40 sp6, the client is running
xp and office xp with all patches loaded. The particular server that this
client is on is the Public Folder server and has the IMC/CC mail connector's
on it.

Troubleshooting steps so far:
1. Turned off, Enable Instant Messaging on the client.
2. Unchecked the all Planner Options on the client.
3. Tried a hosts file with this server name in it.
4. Change the RPC binder order from default to tcp_ip and spx only.
4a. Ran the rpc ping utility from this workstation and set ping 50 times all
successful.
5. Can ping server just by name.
5. arp -a has the correct server and mac address of the nic card
6. nbtstat -c shows the server.
7. Did a nslookup of the exchange server from this workstation and server
resolved.
8. Looked in the Wins manager did notice another entire for this machine
deleted it.
9. Can do a \\exchange server name from the workstation.
10. Uninstalled and reinstalled Office Xp.

I'm cornfused now.and scratching my head about this...

Any suggestions.

Also I want to get a sniff of this workstation and know there is a new
version of netmon called netmon2. I tried ftping to Microsoft's site via a
link that I was given and also searching via the web with no luck do any of
you have it?

RE: Default Calendar coverage period

2003-08-01 Thread Phillip Yan
There is a reghack. I think you may roll out this via a logon script.

Key Name: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Preferences
Value Name: FBPublishRange
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 0xc (which is 12)

Cheers,
Phillip

I need to chnge this to 12 months for all of the users...
Is there a way to modify it on the back end, so we do not need to do it in
Outlook on all the workstations? (think the default is 2 months?)
Thanks-

Redundant OWA

2002-01-07 Thread Phillip Yan

Exchange 5.5 OWA

This is a dedicated OWA server that has only OWA component installed. It is set up to
connect to a Exchange server. The name of the server can be found at the MSExchangeWEB
registry key at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeWEB\Parameters\Server

Is it possible to add one more Exchange server names there to let it be kind of
redundant? In the event of failure of the primary Exchange server that the OWA is
connecting to, the OWA server can pick up the secondary Exchange server. Let me know.

Thank you.

Why Outlook establishes multiple connections to multiple Exchange servers

2001-12-20 Thread Phillip Yan

This is the output from netstat -a. Why Outlook opens so many RPC connections to
multiple Exchange servers even though only mailbox is configured in Outlook profile?

The problem we have encountered here is kind of strange to us. We moved all mailboxes
and public folders from one server (EXCH01) to another, then we powered off EXCH01
(the plan was to delete it from the site to retire it), we wanted to wait for couple
days to see if everything went okay. Users that their mailboxes were moved complained
Outlook login process took a long time and run very slow. Run netstat on the user's
machine. We found Outlook still wanted to talk to EXCH01. The only way to solve this
slow performance problem is to power EXCH01 back on. Now we have powered it on and
users said the slow performance problem is gone. Not sure why Outlook still needs to
talk to the old home server EXCH01. There is nothing on EXCH01. Anyone has similar
problems or experiences please advise. Thanks.

Do you have SP4 on your Exch server? This was an issue before that.

I have 3.52 running on both APAVI mode and MAPI mode. One problem I have
encountered was, but not sure if it is related to Trend, when attempt to
open an item in Inbox, a user would receive an error Can't open this item.
Unknown error, and the problem item cannot be copied, cannot be moved,
cannot be soft deleted, the only way to get rid of it is to do a hard
delete.

Trend Tech support mentioned that customers had to reinstall Exchange when
running ESE version so they recommended us to stay with 3.52 as well.

I take it you went to 3.7 ESE version? That is what I was going to go to,
but Trend recommended the AVAPI since they were having issues with the ESE
version. I didn't inquire exactly what the problems were.

I moved off of 3.52 to a later version a while ago so as not to have to deal
with the 3.52 limitations and issues. MAPI mode will always require logging
into the mailbox, it's a limitation of the methodology. For more information
on the various scanning technologies available for Exchange and the
limitations of same, I suggest asking Mr. Woodruff.

Well I finally bit the bullet and upgraded to ScanMail 3.52. I
currently have it running in AVAPI mode as well as MAPI mode. I was
hoping that the MAPI mode would not create a realscan process for
every 200 accounts that it logs into, as it did in the old version,
but looks as if I'm wrong.

Are the majority of the users who have 3.52 running in both modes or
are most just running in AVAPI or MAPI? Also, has anyone seen
problems running in both modes other than additional overhead on the
system? I know the pro's and con's of each, just wondering what
 everyone else is doing.

Outlook 98 unable to print HTML email

2001-10-22 Thread Phillip Yan

Outlook 98 (version 98 8.5.5104.6)

I have a number of users who are running Outlook 98 on Windows NT 4.0 workstation
computers complaining that when printing out a HTML email, the print job just hung up
on the print server. Open the printer, I can see the Document name having a very long
name. The status shows Printing-Spooling. The document never gets printed out. Is
there any one having seen similar problems? Any advice? Thank you.

Send a meeting request to Internet

2001-09-10 Thread Phillip Yan

Exchange 5.5 SP4

I sent a meeting request to a user who works in a different company but using Exchange
as well. The user received the meeting request and opened it. It showed up just as a
plain text message. The user was not able to accept or reject it. I thought it was
something to do with the IMS connector or SMTP/MIME stuf. How can I do something to
allow an Internet user may see the meeting request in the Microsoft Meeting Request
form format so that he can accept it?

Thanks,
Phillip Yan

Send mail to multiple distribution lists

2001-09-06 Thread Phillip Yan

Exchange 5.5 SP4

A custom recipient is a member of DL1 and a member of DL2. If I send a message to both
DL1 and DL2, the custom recipient would receive two copies of the message. Other
non-custom recipients (Mailboxes) just receive one copy. I want the custom recipient
being able to receive only one copy of message when sending to multiple distribution
lists. Is there a fix for this? Thanks,
