RE: email address

2003-11-20 Thread Ray Beckwith
Yes. Change your address and then, to help keep it from happening again, don't ever
enter your email address on a website. If you must give a valid email address for some
web site registration, use a throwaway address.

If you're an admin on the exchange server (or know one) it's easy to do by creating a
secondary email address in your AD account. Once you're done with the address, delete
it from the account and you'll never get any spam even if that address is harvested. I
have been doing this for a few months and I've not received a single spam on my new
address.

Thanks...Ray

Exchange 2000 Standard to Enterprise

2003-11-12 Thread Ray Beckwith
We are preparing to upgrade from Exchange 2000 Standard Edition to Exchange 2000
Enterprise Edition and I wanted to know if anyone out there has done this procedure
before? Can you give me some ideas what to expect? Have you run into any problems? How
long does it take and what impact does it have on the server.

I appreciate any input you can offer.

RE: Information Store Size Question

2003-11-11 Thread Ray Beckwith
Hmmm. Exchange services running but the store was dismounted. Do I need all services
stopped to get accurate size or just STORE.EXE?

What about the priv.stm file? I noticed that adding it to the EDB file was just over
16GB. Should I be looking there also?

The 16GB limit applies to the size of the EDB and STM files added

We're using BE9.0 as well and back up a total of about 10 servers. The
Exchange server is the last one on the list, and we have never had it
fail. Backup rate is SWEET! As well. Sitting pretty at about 850mb/min
with Exchange. Love that SDLT tape drive!

Tried that. The job just failed earlier. Unfortunately, one of the
changes
to BEX9 includes using NDMP for agent communications. A side affect is
that,
communications failures with one agent can cause the entire job to fail
from
that point. Example, Exchange server third out of 15, first 2 servers
backup
successfully, Exchange gets error, job throws up hands in confusion and
doesn't attempt to backup any other servers. 13 servers fail...

No problems backing up the store with NT Backup. In fact, no
problems backing up the store alone with Backup Exec. Problem
seems only to happen when backing up all (15 total) servers
 in one job.

Last night we tried separating out the Exchange backup in a
separate job and I'm still waiting for it to complete. Will
 update the list with results.

The other option is to upgrade to the 2003 family of products (Windows
2003 with AD 2003) and Exchange 2003 and use Query Based Distribution
Groups (you can then include all mailboxes and when a new one is
created it will automatically be a member). For the organisation I work
with the Query based group is the killer reason for moving to Exchange
2003 (plus OWA)...

Without some coding? I don't think so. Do you have a new hire
workflow?
Can this step be added to it? i.e. once the employee has had his/her
accounts created, have the CEO's admin add this person to the invitee
list, and then send an Update only to changed people.

You could import from a Vcal or PST file, but it won't capture any
changes made to the original meeting request.

network problems but aren't offering much more help on what types of problems to look
for. As far as we can tell we are a standard network setup; Windows 2000 Active
Directory, all up to date on service packs; one Exchange server and one SQL server
(separate machines); no apparent network problems or bottlenecks in everyday
operations.

We've tried setting the ports explicitly to 100mb Full duplex at the Exchange server,
backup server and switch ports. We tried stopping our ScanMail application also and
verified that none of the Exchange maintenance tasks were running at the time of the
backup.

Is there anyone out there that might be able to offer any more suggestions on how to
troubleshoot these problems? We are not getting reliable backups and are looking for
whatever help we can find.

RE: Timeout Errors Backing up Exchange 2000 with Backup Exec 9

2003-08-27 Thread Ray Beckwith
No problems backing up the store with NT Backup. In fact, no problems backing up the
store alone with Backup Exec. Problem seems only to happen when backing up all (15
total) servers in one job.

Last night we tried separating out the Exchange backup in a separate job and I'm still
waiting for it to complete. Will update the list with results.

Thanks...Ray

From the article:
One end result is that some programs, plus services not under control of

that does not have the 'Impersonate a client after authentication' right.

I wonder if that's not the cause of the issue.

RE: Timeout Errors Backing up Exchange 2000 with Backup Exec 9

2003-08-27 Thread Ray Beckwith
Interesting. We were having occasional but rare problems with 8.6 but not specific to
any one server. Veritas kept pointing the finger at network problems but no real
useful information about what kind of problems. We would tweak here and change there
and the problems would go away for a while.

I'm willing to accept the possibility that there may be networking or server
performance issues affecting the backups. The problem I have is there are no other
symptoms on my network of similar issues and so far no one can tell me how to find
anything concrete. I'm certainly open to suggestions along these lines as well if
anyone out there has any thoughts.

Thanks...Ray

Blimy!
I had the same problems with 8.6. Different error message, but it would fail
at least 2 times a week when it was part of a bigger job.
I wound up separating it and by itself it ran fine. Forgot completely about
that.
Never could explain why.

Tried that. The job just failed earlier. Unfortunately, one of the changes to BEX9
includes using NDMP for agent communications. A side affect is that, communications
failures with one agent can cause the entire job to fail from that point. Example,
Exchange server third out of 15, first 2 servers backup successfully, Exchange gets
error, job throws up hands in confusion and doesn't attempt to backup any other
servers. 13 servers fail...

Subject: Help. Exchange 2000 and New Child Domain

I didn't have any luck in the archives or MSKB and I know this is probably a
simple question so, flame away if you must; I'm short on time and resources
and I hope someone will look kindly on me and offer some help or advice.

My situation: In order to support a new subsidiary company, we have created
a new child domain under our single domain forest which also contains our
Exchange 2000 organization. Everything is running in Exchange 2000 SP3
except the domain controllers which are all running SP4.

My Problem: I can create users in the new domain in AD Users and Computers
including creating the mailbox and configuring the mailbox properties. But
when I attempt to log that user in to Exchange with Outlook, I get The name
could not be resolved. The name could not be matched to a name in the
address list. Also, when I look in the GAL I don't see this user (we're
using the same GAL for now) and I don't see a mailbox in ESM in our
information store.

Help. Exchange 2000 and New Child Domain

2003-08-14 Thread Ray Beckwith
I didn't have any luck in the archives or MSKB and I know this is probably a simple
question so, flame away if you must; I'm short on time and resources and I hope
someone will look kindly on me and offer some help or advice.

My situation: In order to support a new subsidiary company, we have created a new
child domain under our single domain forest which also contains our Exchange 2000
organization. Everything is running in Exchange 2000 SP3 except the domain controllers
which are all running SP4.

My Problem: I can create users in the new domain in AD Users and Computers including
creating the mailbox and configuring the mailbox properties. But when I attempt to log
that user in to Exchange with Outlook, I get The name could not be resolved. The name
could not be matched to a name in the address list. Also, when I look in the GAL I
don't see this user (we're using the same GAL for now) and I don't see a mailbox in
ESM in our information store.

Please if anyone can offer assistance, we would be extremely thankful.

Thanks...Ray

For the rule, replace the From [user] criteria with contains [text] in the message
header and then put the name in the [text] position. This should catch even the sent

Subject: Mailbox Rule - Send on Behalf

Hi,

I receive multiple emails that are 'sent on behalf' of Data Center. The
rule I have created never works. I specifically must state who the
email is being sent from, in this case Brian Hale, for the rule to work.

This is the from the email:

From: Brian Hale On Behalf Of Data Center

My question is:
Can you create a rule that works even when the email is 'sent on behalf
of'? Is there a better way to do this? Perhaps this is a design
problem? Has anyone else run into this issue and if so how did you work
around it?

Thank you,

Re: ScanMail missing tricks?

2003-06-06 Thread Ray Beckwith
We had this issue a while back when we first started using ScanMail. We
found out from Trend that when ScanMail runs in MAPI mode, it doesn't scan
the attachments until AFTER the message is in the inbox; which leaves the
possibility if the server is extremely busy scanning, the user could see
and even open the message before the scanner gets to it.

The solution was to run ScanMail in AVAPI mode instead. This mode
intercepts attachments before they reach the IS. Just be sure you have
upgraded to the latest version of ScanMail and the latest Exchange SP
first as there have been issues with AVAPI mode in earlier versions
crashing the IS. Check the list archives for this topic. I know it was
discussed here a couple years ago.

Good Luck.

RE: Exchange 2000 Services crashing and server rebooting...

2003-06-06 Thread Ray Beckwith
I have an update on this issue for those of you still following it, and another
question.

First, I am still in the process of getting the latest version of ScanMail (6.1) from
Trend. Apparently 5.1 is no longer supported and they won't talk to me until I get up
to date. Also, the problem has been accelerating; we are now seeing the services crash
daily and sometimes multiple times daily.

The question is, do any of you out there who have heard of this issue also have a
MetaFrame server in your organization and have you seen it acting strangely as well?
We have seen, on several occasions, the MetaFrame server's WWW Publishing Service stop
unexpectedly at around the same time as the Exchange services go down.

As always, I welcome any input or suggestions.

Thanks...Ray

Subject: Exchange 2000 Services crashing and server rebooting...

I have a question to run by the list that I have been unsuccessful in finding any
definitive answers to anywhere else. About a month ago, we started having problems
with our Exchange 2000 server. It is Ex2K SP3 running on Win2K SP3. At intervals
between a couple days and a week, we notice that a number of System Services shut down
unexpectedly. Upon looking at the event logs we see the following sequence of events.

Event Id: 7031 The IIS Admin Service service terminated unexpectedly...
Event Id: 7031 The Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 service terminated
unexpectedly...
Event Id: 7031 The Network News Transport (NNTP) service terminated
unexpectedly...
Event Id: 7031 The Microsoft Exchange POP3 terminated unexpectedly...
Event Id: 7031 The Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine service terminated
unexpectedly...
Event Id: 7031 The Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) service terminated
unexpectedly...
Event Id: 7031 The World Wide Web Publishing service terminated unexpectedly...

On 2 occasions, this sequence was followed by the server rebooting on its own and
generating an event ID 6008 the previous shutdown...was unexpected.

I searched the MSKB and the only thing I could find that seemed to relate was a
reference to lingering issues from the CodeRed virus. I used Trend Micro's system
cleanup application and confirmed that there were no indications of infection on the
server.

I am hoping there are others out there that may have seen something like this that can
offer some suggestions short of reinstalling the entire system. Please help.

Thanks in advance...

Exchange and AD Question

2003-06-04 Thread Ray Beckwith
This question may be a little off the list subject but you guys are some of the best
authorities I know so I wanted your opinions. (Note the subtle butt-kissing)

Situation:
Single domain forest with single Exchange Server and total 4 DC. About 85 Employees.
Class C IP block with fixed IP addresses for all. We are in the process of starting up
a new venture company and want to keep them relatively separate from our main
organization so as they grow, they can be easily separated if so chosen. We have our
web presence under ourcompany.org and have reserved a domain theircompany.com for the
new company's web presence. We have also set up recipient policies in Exchange to
receive email sent to theircompany.com for the first couple users we have set up in
our domain.

Question.
What would be the best way to set up this new company in our AD organization to meet
the requirements of easy separation in the future, while allowing us to continue
serving them with our single Exchange server and with minimal additional expense and
complexity.

We have been looking into the possibility of setting up a child domain for them so
that they can have separate security and domain suffix but are unsure if we can do
this without adding a subnet or some other complexity.

I appreciate any opinions or recommendations from the wise ones of the list (more
butt-kissing).

RE: Exchange and AD Question

2003-06-04 Thread Ray Beckwith
In either the child-domain or new tree scenario, is there a need to separate them onto
a subnet or can they just be assigned IP addresses from our existing class C block? I
wanted to clarify that this was one of the important questions that I have not been
able to find a definitive answer on

Thanks again for your assistance.

My understanding is that so long as it is all part of the same root forest
you should have no problem with that. If I am wrong I am sure someone here
will be more than happy to correct me.

You want a separate TREE in the forest, not a child domain.

Subject: Exchange and AD Question

This question may be a little off the list subject but you guys are some of the
best authorities I know so I wanted your opinions. (Note the subtle
butt-kissing)

Situation:
Single domain forest with single Exchange Server and total 4 DC. About 85
Employees. Class C IP block with fixed IP addresses for all. We are in the
process of starting up a new venture company and want to keep them relatively
separate from our main organization so as they grow, they can be easily
separated if so chosen. We have our web presence under ourcompany.org and have
reserved a domain theircompany.com for the new company's web presence. We have
also set up recipient policies in Exchange to receive email sent to
theircompany.com for the first couple users we have set up in our domain.

Question.
What would be the best way to set up this new company in our AD organization to
meet the requirements of easy separation in the future, while allowing us to
continue serving them with our single Exchange server and with minimal
additional expense and complexity.

We have been looking into the possibility of setting up a child domain for them
so that they can have separate security and domain suffix but are unsure if we
can do this without adding a subnet or some other complexity.

I appreciate any opinions or recommendations from the wise ones of the list
(more butt-kissing).

Thanks...

Re: Messages supposedly not being deleted

2003-06-04 Thread Ray Beckwith
I see a couple possibilities.

1. They are using POP3 or IMAP connection and have the mailbox set to
leave messages on the server when they download.

2. They are using Outlook in Corporate/Workgroup mode over the VPN but are
working offline and not synchronizing the offline folder after
reading/deleting the messages.

Either possibility should be relatively easy to diagnose over the phone
with the user. If you have them look in their Tools menu, you can tell
what mode they are in by seeing if they have the Services or Accounts
selection. Services means Corporate or Workgroup, Accounts means Internet
Only. From there, you can either check their offline folder settings in CW
mode or have them uncheck the Leave Messages on Server option in their
account advanced settings for Internet Only.

Good luck.

 Outlook 2000
 Exchange 5.5 SP4
 VPN access over broadband.

We have a user with a computer at home they use to access their coporate
email. They are saying that messages that they have deleted in that Outlook
profile are not showing as deleted when they get back into the office. We
don't have the ability to get in front of this box to see how it is
(mis)configured. They are not using pop3 or IMAP. This is not happening to
anyone else on the same server.

What I am wondering is if anyone has seen this behavoir when accessing the
 mailbox from 2 different profiles.

 TIA

 Ken

Exchange 2000 Services crashing and server rebooting...

2003-06-03 Thread Ray Beckwith

E2K Deferred Delivery and Receive Date

2002-06-20 Thread Ray Beckwith

We have discovered a strange issue that started when we upgraded our Exchange 5.5
server (running on Windows NT 4 SP 6a) to Exchange 2000 on Windows 2000 (both at SP2)
The issue happens to anyone who sends a message from Outlook 2000 with deferred
delivery set either through View, Options, Do Not Deliver Before or File,
Properties, Send Options, Exchange Server, Send message after The recipient
receives the message after the appropriate deferral time but the receive timestamp on
the message is always equal to the time sent.

This creates a problem for us as, when viewing the inbox sorted by receive date, the
deferred messages will show up somewhere in then middle and can cause confusion.

If anyone has seen this or has any ideas on how to troubleshoot the issue, please let
me know. We really want to be able to use the message deferral in E2K but this problem
makes is practically useless.

Exchange 2000 Deferred Delivery gives incorrect Sent Date

2002-03-19 Thread Ray Beckwith

I have another issue that appears to be related to our upgrade from Exchange 5.5 to
Exchange 2000 that I could use your input on. Since the upgrade, when senders use
either of the deferred delivery options (view, options and set do not deliver before
[date] or File, Properties, Send Options, Microsoft Exchange Server and set the Send
this item delay time) the item is sent with the Send Date and Received Date equal to
the date it was originally sent. In Exchange 5.5, the Received Date was set to the
deferral date.

This is causing issues with the deferred messages and users who sort their inboxes by
the received date. Any suggestions about this would be greatly appreciated.

equal to the date it was originally sent. In Exchange 5.5,
the Received Date was set to the deferral date.

This is causing issues with the deferred messages and users
who sort their inboxes by the received date. Any suggestions
about this would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Exchange 2000, Outlook 2000 and Name Checking

2002-03-18 Thread Ray Beckwith

I discovered the cause of my last name resolving issue. It seems that, in our in-place
upgrade from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000, only the display name was transferred to
Active Directory. When I filled in the First and Last Name fields for a particular
record, the last name would resolve correctly.

Point taken. Maybe I can find an answer searching the Windows KB. I keep
forgetting that Exchange is integrated into AD now.

So, what you are saying is, I can only search in the order the names are
displayed. Again I say, could Exchange 2000 be stupider than 5.5? In 5.5
we could search on any string of characters anywhere in the name and it
would resolve

Example to get Johan Sebastian Bach, I could simply type bast and, if no
other names in the GAL had that string in them, it would resolve. Also,
if it resolved multiple names from the string typed in, you would be
prompted to chose from the list. This is the functionality I am looking
for again. I can't believe that upgrading to Exchange 2000 will end up
being a step backwards on this issue.

I have a question that has been stumping me for the past week. We just
brought up our new Exchange 2000 server last weekend and I can't figure
out why we can no longer type in a last name or part of a last name and
have Outlook 2000 resolve it from the GAL. Exchange 5.5 would do this
and many of us got used to it. Now the only way to get the correct name
is to start from the beginning and work across (First Last). Has
Exchange 2000 really gotten stupider?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Good guess. He is sending RTF. After I sent the message yesterday another
search of Microsoft KB revealed article Q197066. Going to change to plain
text and test this morning. Will update the list.

Fresh out of Batman cookies. I do have this nice box of Microsoft Server

I have a single user who is having a strange problem that has me completely
stumped. This user will send out attachments to recipients outside our
organization and 2 of the recipients either get no attachment or they are
unable to open the attachment they receive. If his assistant sends the
attachment all recipients receive the files with no problems. We found at
one point that attachments arriving unopenable were getting to the user with
the extension removed from the file which was part of the reason they
couldn't open them. (example, sent FILE.DOC, recipient gets FILE and can't
open).

He has also had some success sending the same attachment to another person
in the same organization without problems but that is inconsistent.

We have verified that his mailbox seems to be normal and has the same
configuration as other users. We made sure he had SP1 installed for Outlook
and the latest version of IE (5.5 sp2).

Our environment is:
Exchange 5.5 sp3
Windows NT sp6a
Outlook 2000 sp1 client

I would appreciate any suggestions on this. Especially as the sender is our
PR director and the recipients are CEO's and the Chairman of our Board.
