Subject: People using my IIS SMTP relay

Well, after making sure my IIS 4.0 SMTP relay server was not infected by
the NIMDA virus and applying all the MS01-044 IIS cumulative security
bulletin, I am still being used as a relay point.

The most confusing thing is: I can't understand how they are doing it
because when I telnet into the IIS SMTP relay from HOME, it DOESN'T
allow me to relay. The following shows up:

220-w-smtp01.whitnall.com Microsoft SMTP MAIL ready at Wed, 21 Nov 2001
08:16:19 -0600 Version: 5.5.1877.197.19
220 ESMTP spoken here

At this point I try and type Helo me, Mail From:, or other commands,
and they ALL fail with either a) a 550 error, b) no response.

If on the other hand, I telnet into the SMTP relay from a PC here on the
LAN I can issue Helo me, Mail From: or other commands and use it as
a relay without problem.

What I'm looking for is someone running IIS SMTP services to help me out
here. My IIS SMTP relay is in my DMZ Interface and my (1) Exchange
server is on the Inside Interface of the firewall. I'm worried that our
domain will start getting banned or black listed (I heard this happens)
because we are being used as a relay point. This is the 2nd day it's
been occuring and I need to get this fixed soon.

If you can help, please let me know. Thanks.

RE: A new world order

2001-11-21 Thread STEVE BROOK

Depends on which version of IE you are using, but in 5 above, the
options/security tab shows icons for Internet/Intranet/Trusted and
Restricted sites. Which is your OWA site? Intranet or Internet?
Whichever type, set a Custom level. WYYY down the bottom of the
next list is the option for User Authentication which is probably set to
automatically log on. Set this to Prompt for User name and Password.
Close IE. Now when ever you open IE and got to OWA site you should get
a logon box. User just has to remember to close IE.

Exchange 5.5 - Exchange 2000 = Completed!
First of all, I'd like to thank everyone on the list who made my life
easier; in between the flames and the haikus, this list is a real
treasure trove of tips - muchas gracias.

Now, here's the first bit of oddness i've discovered in 2k, and I was
wondering how people handled it: In E2K OWA, there is no log off icon.
We have machines that work more or less in kiosk mode, for people to
surf and check mail via web access. previously, all we had to do was
tell users to log out and the session was closed. Now, it appears that
if someone just x-es out of the browser, a cookie is stored on the
machine that automatically logs in the previous user's mailbox when a
new user tries to log on. I can turn off cookies on those browsers if i
have to, but I also have users who check other exchange mailboxen via
OWA from their workstations, and I can't restrict cookie usage on those
machines. Any thoughts?

While we're picking nits.

vir = man viri = men or venoms, the latter being so rare a usage
as to never have appeared outside of academic circles, long after Latin
had become a solely academic language.

Ob Exchange Topic: I suggest hereafter we pedants demand alii rather
than aliases, if we're going to be so snooty as to insist on not using
viruses when speaking English. At least that is well-known,
well-documented Latin, as seen in Cicero, Ovid, et alii. :)

 Actually Ed, you're a little out ..,

Viri = A man (usually of Honour) Same word for singular and
 plural. One
phrase no classics student is ever going to forget!
 Especially anyone who
 had doings with Homer. (Bart...!)

Virui = To be green or verdant; be lively or vigorous; be
 full of youth.
 (Just like this list!)
This is where the English virulent (with a bit of
 intervention from German
and its meaning taken as strong and dangerous) comes from and
 this is how
the word virus made it into the English language...

and to bring this topic back to slightly On T., also became the
widespread phenomenon we know and love today.

Oops the second 'i' was a mistake..but you are perfectly right

If you are going to be really pedantic, the latin for Viruses
 is Irusesvavy

 since I last

RE: New startup Page 4 OWA

Just tried altering the logon page and it works. Probably the default
location would be c:\inetpub\... for the other OWA pages and
c:\inetpub\wwwroot if you want a logon page.

Hugely different. There isn't a logon page anymore, nor a default.htm
page within the Exchange virtual directory. OWA runs out of the
information store, not from files off the hard drive (for the most
part). Tons of other differences too.

Hmmm. How different is E2k from E5.5 SP4. E5.5 installs OWA as a
virtual directory (/exchange). You would need to put a default.htm file
in the root directory (look at your IIS MMC). Use the default.htm to
create Hyper's to the virtual directory.
