Certain types of relay attempts will also show up in this folder, also.

You can read .BAD files with Notepad and if they are of no value -
delete them and the corresponding two other files (each .BAD file has
.BDP and .BDR files with the same name)

Files that go into the Bad folder are the NDRs that could not be sent
out because the messages that caused NDRs came from bad addresses
themselves.

There is a folder on my exchangen 2000 server called BadMail. It has
about 150 Mb of data in. Can anyone tell me what type of email goes in
this folder and why its still there. It appears that there are messages
dating all they way back to day 1. Can I just kill it?

Thanks

RE: BADMAIL Folder Questions

2003-10-03 Thread David Lemson
To clarify, typically NDRs go to whomever they are addressed to. What
goes into badmail is typically messages that are NDRs of NDRs. That is,
your machine can't deliver some message, so it wants to NDR it, but in
fact the message that it is trying to deliver is itself an NDR, so there
is no sender to send it back to, so instead of just deleting it, it
sticks it in the badmail directory.
The .BDP and .BDR files associated with the .BAD file are diagnostic or
result codes associated with the badmailing of the message.

In general, it is safe to delete any files in that directory. If the
Exchange server didn't know what to do with them, odds are you won't,
either. To make yourself feel better, you should look at some of them
(I suspect you already have) to get a feel for what they are, so you
don't feel so bad about deleting them.

Hello All.

I was reading about the BADMAIL folder. I understand that this is where
"bad mail" or NDRs go. How do you handle the contents in this folder?
Do you delete it with a task weekly or just when you see it filling?
Also, I noticed there are three different file types in this folder,
.BAD, .BDP, and .BDR. The .BAD extension I understand but what are the
.BDP and .BDR?

My reading up on this tells me that I can delete anything in the
...\\EXCHSRVR\Mailroot\vsi 1\BadMail folder. I trust this article but
want to confirm with the experts on this list before deleting files on
any Exchange server(I am a chicken I know).

Thanks

We're running e2k sp2 in an active/passive cluster. It has always been
very reliable. Over the last few days I've been getting messages that
the processors are bursting to near 100% utilization. I just checked
and the badmail folder has more than 1800 files from the last couple of
weeks. Can these be deleted? I'm looking on MSKB but can't find an
article that says to go ahead and delete them. Our messages are sitting
in the outbox for more than 10 minutes at a time.

We discovered all the files in Badmail a few weeks ago. When I inquired here, was told
to go ahead and delete the files. Also created a script that deletes automatically as
