Re: Emails per day

2003-03-14 Thread Chris Scharff
The problem with most applications which report on message traffic (not
MessageStats specifically necessarily) is that they tend to do a relatively
poor job of rolling up the data, so that in enterprise environments keeping
long term historical data (possibly at a less granular level) for trending
purposes involves additional scripting on your part. A question for the
vendor would be how much space would 12 months worth of historical data
occupy for your organization based on your estimated traffic.

Course, I work for a vendor which makes a product which does what you're
looking for along with a few other things, so please take my points with the
grain of salt they deserve.

This could well be a dumb question but, we've been asked to find out how
many e-mails are sent in a single day. Now we could check at the
firewall/mail gateway but that'd only get outbound/inbound mail. Perfmon
might give a clue (if we could stand that performance hit) and we can
monitor disk growth, but does anybody know a simple way to assess how many

You can also use the performance logs. You then use the details to either
average the total sent or show specific days. We have just done our mail
server's and last year averaged approx 100,000 a day.

Subject: Emails don't show in additional mailbox

Exchange 2000 sp2 on a single server
I have a disabled account with a mailbox that a user accesses via additional
mailboxes in Outlook 2000 that isn't showing any messages. It will show the
amount of unread messages, but that is it, nothing appears in the inbox
itself. If you mount the mailbox as the primary mailbox everything shows
up, this works on multiple machines with different users that have access to
the mailbox too. The empty inbox when mounted as an additional mailbox is
also machine and user id independent. Does anyone have any ideas as to why
this may happen? It was working until today, no changes were made to the
AD, user rights or Exchange. I know I could recreate the mailbox after
exporting the mail, but I want to see if I can fix the problem first. Thank
you in advance, Jer

The messages in question are marked as private and/or the view is configured
incorrectly.

I have noticed recently emails have been going to people from my address
when I haven't sent them. Also, some emails have been sent to me from my
company address ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) but such a mailbox does not
exist on my server.
How can I control this from my Exchange server ?

RE: Emails being sent as me

2002-06-07 Thread Louis Joyce

Firstly, when emails are received. Take a look at the headers. They usually
explain a few things like where the message originated from. If there is a
message header visible from a mail supposedly sent internally then you know
it is from an outside source. Messages sent internally don't, if I am not
mistaken, have an internet message header.

Right click on the message and choose options.

RE: Emails being sent as me

2002-06-07 Thread Charles Carerros

This isn't an issue of your Exchange server. It's more like someone is
spoofing you. Of course there are also virus that take peoples address
books and send messages as the name in the books. Or you could get a
hold of old copies of Netscape and send e-mail as other people, but that
can be annoying because you have to change the profile around.

In other words, as far as I know, there is no way to stop this.

RFC821 and RFC822. No domain extensions were picked up, what you are seeing
is the RFC822 header which has nothing to do with the RFC821 envelope.

Sounds a little like you've got an open relay and the messages are being
received by your people as spam and also relayed elsewhere.
Check your system (IMS / smtp service) for relay

Can someone explain to me how a Spam message comes into the company and
picks up two of our domain extensions? Example: the Spam message came
from
[EMAIL PROTECTED] When it was received by one of our employees,
the
address had changed to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>@Day@Hoy (these domains are
just an example).

How did it pick up the 2 domain extensions and how can I block these
types
of messages?

2001-11-12 Thread Black, Nathan

I've seen this happen on some of the other lists I'm on. Thank heaven for
procmail and mutt. :)

It seems only the HTML replies from Outlook 2xxx users on Exchange 2k that
have this happening. Perhaps the IMC isn't converting something? I don't
have a 2k box to track it down on. But it doesn't appear to be the Linux
boxes running Major-Domo CGI or Lyris that are the cause, just a common
link.

RE: Emails sent twice: once plain text, once HTML

2001-11-12 Thread Chris Scharff

The contents of the message body are included twice by default in Outlook
(and most other mail clients) once as HTML and once as plain text... But the
messages aren't sent twice. In order to know what is really going on, I
think you'll need to turn up logging and watch what is being sent from
Exchange.

RE: Emails sent twice: once plain text, once HTML

2001-11-12 Thread Allison Wittstock

Hi Tom,

I will answer the questions in-line.

On Sat, 10 Nov 2001, you wrote:
> I'm not really sure what your architecture is here. Are you saying that

Yes, one server is located in the office for internal mail (it is also the SMTP
Server - we only send emails thru this server). The other server is located
externally at a hosting company. We only check our external mail from this
server, and do not use it for sending our mail.
Why? Well the best reason is cost. We have to pay for external traffic (traffic
that flows from the office to the outside). So when we email each other
internally we don't have to pay for the traffic.

Nothing has changed on the linux system. I am "the Linux people".

So its a "feature" that internet mail is sent twice? OR am I misunderstanding?
But right now, my setting is "Message test as unformatted Text". The "both" is
unchecked.

It seems to be coming only from about half the users, to anywhere they send
emails.

RE: Emails sent twice: once plain text, once HTML

2001-11-10 Thread Thomas Di Nardo

I'm not really sure what your architecture is here. Are you saying that
you have two separate email systems; one for internet mail and one for
intranet mail? My first question, if this is the case, is why?

If the above is correct, you have probably made a change on your Linux
system that is causing it to have an issue with the fact that E2K sends
each message as both plain text and HTML. If that is the case you can
either find out what you changed and remove the change or get your Linux
people to fix it. The next option is to change the default Internet Mail
Format to just plaintext.

By default E2K sends all internet mail as both plaint text and HTML.
Some non-Exchange systems have trouble with this. For those domains that
have an issue you can set up domain exceptions under Global
Settings/Internet Message Format in ESM. Choose to send plain text OR
HTML rather than both.

If your problem is just with a few external domains, you might want to
try an exception for one of the effected domains to see if the result is
better.

Subject: Emails sent twice: once plain text, once HTML

Hi,

A recent problem has appeared in which emails sent by the Exchange users
are
being received twice. The plain text message header shows it being sent
from
the user machine, to the internal linux mail server to the recipient.
The HTML
mail has the same sent-time, but the receiving time is minutes later.
The
header for these mails show it going to the Exchange server to the
recipient.

Is there a way to stop this without removing the "Internet Mail" account
from
the Services list? The users need to check both the internal mail
(Exchange)
and the external (Internet Mail).

The clients are using Outlook 2000 and the server is 2000 also.

Note: Although the Exchange server has been in place for some months,
this
problem has recently appeared.

Thanks,
A.W.

Send an e-mail to another e-mail address (e-mail server) and see if that
