RE: Exchange installed on BDC

2001-08-22 Thread Linton Smith (WBTQ)

I don't understand the fear of restoring Exchange on a BDC. I can
understand how this might be awkward if the system were the only DC for the
domain, but even this isn't difficult as long as you have a good current
backup of the SAM.

One of my clients has 25+ sites, each with a single server acting as BDC,
File/Print, Exchange, WINS, DHCP, GroupShield - you name it. Number of
users varies from 10 to over 100. They all run remarkably well. When I go
to upgrade hardware, I don't use the Ed Crowley Move Server method - I do it
as though it was a disaster recovery. This allows me to keep the same
server name - important given that client systems reference this for file
and print. It also allows me to complete the job in one day, taking the old
hardware with me.

To do this, I:
- ensure the Exchange queues are clear
- yank the network cable
- run an online backup of Exchange
- shut down and disable Exchange
- plug the network cable back in
- rename the server, keeping it in the domain (allows for quick
re-instatement if rollback is necessary)
- create a backup of all user files etc.
- dump out a listing of user shares (including home directories). I modify
this to recreate them on the new server
- turn off the old system
- delete the old computer account from the domain
- begin building a new BDC with the same name from scratch, allowing the SAM
to replicate from the PDC (what's hard about that?)
- completely re-install all software and drivers from scratch
- restore the Exchange online backup
- restore user data
- recreate shares, printers etc.
- go home.

The obvious drawback of this approach is downtime (typically, 24 hours with
DAT tapes, much less with DLT).

What makes this easy? Complete and up to date documentation describing the
entire configuration, every driver (and source), every printer, every share
and so on. This isn't anything special, however. If you are serious about
disaster recovery, you should be fully documenting your servers anyway.

HTH,

Linton

About 120 times over the years.

As long as an additional, reliable PDC/BDC exists elsewhere, there are no
worries.

It's when Exchange is the only domain controller

We have Exchange 5.5 SP4, also Norton Anvtivirus for Exchange. It is also a

RE: Exchange installed on BDC

2001-08-21 Thread Ed Crowley

The bases for the advice of not putting Exchange on a DC are that:
1. it will complicate disaster recovery, and
2. performance will suffer.

The second reason doesn't apply in your case, but the first one does. If I
were you, I would put in a couple of cast-off desktops with some added
memory as your domain controllers and leave Exchange on a member server.
Also, I would be sure that I have a recovery server.

RE: Exchange installed on BDC

2001-08-21 Thread Walsh, Ric

Yes it is not a good idea if you have a lot of users.
However we are doing it at two of our small sites. Both of these have 50 or
less users. The only NT box there is the Exchange server. We have had no
problems in doing this. The onl problem that we have had is that the users
can't change their passwords if the link back to the PDC is down. However,
this would still be an issue if the BDC were on another machine.

RE: Exchange installed on BDC

2001-08-21 Thread Ed Crowley

128MB. It has one of those weird PCChips motherboards that has two DIMM
slots and four SIMM slots, but if you use the first two SIMM slots you
can't use the first DIMM slot. It claims you can put in a 128MB DIMM, but
not any 128MB DIMM you can buy nowadays, so the best I could do with all the
slots, the memory I had, and what I bought on eBay was get 128MB total. I
could get another 32MB in it, but I'd have to toss my existing 32MB of RAM
and pay maybe $60, and that isn't worth it.

I know it is not a good practice to have Exchange 5.5 installed on a

a bad experience or a horror story about this setup before I proceed. or
any

No pain, really. It really works a lot better than it should. For some
technical editing I was doing, I even ran a terminal server session off of

RE: Exchange installed on BDC

2001-08-17 Thread Bueffel, Scott M - CNF

Forget the paranoid admins who freak out over putting it on a BDC. It will
work fine. The concern is over authentication traffic as well as security
issues over having a SAM on the server, especially if it is accessible via
the Internet. For your small environment go right ahead.

On a BDC
Copy of SAM exists so
Exchange is okay.

(in other words, the bigges problem is when you don't have an alternate copy
of the SAM. you do, so you could still recover if you lose the server.)
