With 5.5 the client needs to resolve the NetBios name.

Easy to check, run nbtstat -a Server_Name Note the a

 case in this command syntax.

  I have a client with Exchange 5.5 sp2 on a NT server.
 There are four
users, and they all have accounts with the exchange server
 via outlook

98, or outlook 2000. There are two people who have
 internet connect
via a static I/P address (a static entry for DNS and a
  gateway/router). One
of the two users have problems connecting to the exchange
 (this is a
local exchange on the LAN) server. Should I set up a wins
  server and or
a DNS server? The reason I am asking is that he can't resolve the
exchange server's name to an I/P address.

2001-08-20 Thread Roger Seielstad

NBTSTAT is used to examine all things NetBIOS on your machine - including
NetBIOS name cache (nbtstat -c, I believe)

NETSTAT is used to look at the TCP/IP connections.

Neither has a darn thing to do with DNS.

All I can tell you, Rick (notwithstanding your place of
 employment), is that
when we were having DNS issues, Outlook didn't work very
 well. It would take
at least 2 or 3 minutes for it to open, and quite often
 navigating between
inbox folders experienced the same delay. WINS was working
 fine, and pinging
servers by name was no problem. When I created a HOSTS file with the
Exchange server names in it and did an nbtstat -R, Outlook
 behaved just
fine. Of course, once DNS was fixed, things were fine as
 well. WINS and
NetBios did come into play, but only after DNS resolution
 timed out and
 failed.

If you #PRE tag the Lmhosts entrys then they will get read
 before DNS or
HOSTS, since they'd already be loaded in the NetBios Cache Table.

5.5 doesn't care how the client resolves the name. Only the
 client cares,
and Outlook uses DNS (or HOSTS) first.

With 5.5 the client needs to resolve the NetBios name.

Easy to check, run nbtstat -a Server_Name Note the a
 must be lower
 case in this command syntax.

I have a client with Exchange 5.5 sp2 on a NT server.
  There are four
users, and they all have accounts with the exchange server
   via outlook
98, or outlook 2000. There are two people who have internet
connect via
a static I/P address (a static entry for DNS and a
gateway/router). One
of the two users have problems connecting to the exchange
  (this is a
local exchange on the LAN) server. Should I set up a wins
server and or
a DNS server? The reason I am asking is that he can't
 resolve the
exchange server's name to an I/P address.

RE: Using exchange server without a WINS/DNS server ???

2001-08-18 Thread Andy David

Am I missing something here? I thought we were dealing with Outlook access
to the Exchange Server - not Workstation access to a Windows domain.
Outlook will resolve the host name over TCP/IP checking HOSTS and DNS
*before* WINS and LMHOSTS (Mike mentioned this somewhere way back in this
thread).
The RPC binding order can certainly be changed on the client, however the
default binding order is TCP/IP before netbios.

Actually, LMHOSTS is the quickest IF you use the #PRE parameter as part of
an entry.
It tells Windows to preload that entry permanently into cache in RAM which
is
checked first for name resolution. Practically instant
resolution... There are several
Technet articles about setting this up...

With 5.5 the client needs to resolve the NetBios name.

Easy to check, run nbtstat -a Server_Name Note the a must be lower
case in this command syntax.

RE: Using exchange server without a WINS/DNS server ???

2001-08-17 Thread Mike Morrison

Nope. DNS. Outlook looks at DNS entries first-- hence when Outlook takes 2
or 3 minutes to start up, the first thing to look at is DNS. Since DNS is
the answer, the HOSTS file is more important than the LMHOSTS file. Both of
these files can be identical, though, so if you're making one, it's no big
deal to make the other.

RE: Using exchange server without a WINS/DNS server ???

2001-08-17 Thread Bob Wright

Actually, LMHOSTS is the quickest IF you use the #PRE parameter as part of
an entry.
It tells Windows to preload that entry permanently into cache in RAM which is
checked first for name resolution. Practically instant
resolution... There are several
Technet articles about setting this up...

All I can tell you, Rick (notwithstanding your place of employment), is that
when we were having DNS issues, Outlook didn't work very well. It would take
at least 2 or 3 minutes for it to open, and quite often navigating between
inbox folders experienced the same delay. WINS was working fine, and pinging
servers by name was no problem. When I created a HOSTS file with the
Exchange server names in it and did an nbtstat -R, Outlook behaved just
fine. Of course, once DNS was fixed, things were fine as well. WINS and
NetBios did come into play, but only after DNS resolution timed out and
failed.

Chunky Monkey here.

I think you'll find Outlook struggles more than a little bit without
being able to resolve NetBios names.

If you #PRE tag the Lmhosts entrys then they will get read before DNS or
HOSTS, since they'd already be loaded in the NetBios Cache Table.

Would using a HOSTS file be better(quicker)? I'M thinking
LMHOSTS is the
last on the list when searching for hosts. Yes..no?

WINS.

If there are only 4 users... you could even deploy an
LMHOSTS file (WINS
is
preferred)

 I have a client with Exchange 5.5 sp2 on a NT server.
There are four
users, and they all have accounts with the exchange server
via outlook

98, or outlook 2000. There are two people who have
internet connect
via a static I/P address (a static entry for DNS and a
 gateway/router). One
of the two users have problems connecting to the exchange
(this is a
local exchange on the LAN) server. Should I set up a wins
 server and or
a DNS server? The reason I am asking is that he can't resolve the
exchange server's name to an I/P address.
