RE: Removing the first server...possible stupid question
We recently did the same thing (remove the first server from a site) and several users were hit by delays in Outlook. On inspecting the MAPI profile registry sections of the affected client machines, we discovered more than one reference to the removed server. This was the result of something we did to our Outlook configuration, as opposed to any fault with Exchange or Outlook. (Before firing up the registry editor, check an affected user's Control Panel-Mail settings to see if there are any service entries that refer to the old box.) FWIW, you could check an affected machine's registry under : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Windows Messaging Subsystem\ Profiles\ MS Exchange Settings (or whatever the user's mapi profile is called) for any entries that refer to the old server. If you use REGEDIT.EXE, you can easily search for the server's name. We ended up deleting some of the registry keys because they referred to a default mailbox (part of a ghost image configuration) on the removed server. After deleting these particular subkeys the affected machines seemed to recover. Please be careful if you do see anything and decide to delete - BACKUP THE REGISTRY FIRST. Of course, this may have nothing to do with your problem(!) I stopped all the services on this server for the weekend, about a month and a half ago, thinking that nobody would holler. Make sure all public folder replicas are gone, and that the Event Service (if installed) is shut down. The server you removed had Public Folders on it. Now the users (Outlook) are still trying to access that as their PF server. The fix is to either recreate all profiles or bring another box up with that same name then have everyone in the site hit the PF's so it redirects the client to the new PF server. A nice link sent out to all will work great. Thanks to everyone for all their responses. They were all great ideas, but this server has been up for weeks since making the changes indicated below, giving everyone ample time to connect to the server that has inherited this server's duties. Thanks to an offline response from Geoff Mason, I found what I believe is the answer to my problem. While Geoff's answer didn't fix my problem, he did point me to Q235396, which in turn pointed me to Q152960. In reading that Q article, I found the following section: Changing the Site Folder Server If the Site Folder Server is removed from the site, Exchange will automatically discover the problem and select another server, but this may take several hours or longer. The site folder server has responsibility for verifying the validity and existence of the Offline Address Book (OAB) and the Schedule+ Free Busy (F/B) folders. Well DUH! That makes sense now, why I was still getting people that show up as logging onto the server. Followed the instructions for altering the Site Folder Server, and sure enough!, there was the name of the first server in the Org. Changed it to point to the OAB/Free+Busy server and am letting it replicate now. Thanks again to everyone for the great responses! Can it be done? Yes. It is possible to write a backup system that in effect copies off the contents of individual mailboxes one at a time, thus exploding single instance storage into some unfathomable large number that will require Enron accounting to pay for the backup media. Do any shipping backup products support it? I don't know, but would be very surprised if they didn't. Lots of people make procurement decisions on dubious criteria. Tell you boss that there is no such thing a an individual mailbox and that it's all an illusion. There is one big group account. It is called the store. Different users get to see different content based on their permissions. Regular backup is bricked, since it takes a single image of the single mailbox that is the store. They all claim to do it. None do it accurately or well. They all use the MAPI client interfaces to access the data. But the MAPI client interfaces don't get the data out in a way that can be put back in without loss and change. The MAPI interfaces, like Craig alluded to, only present a view of the database. So, there's no way to actually back up all the data that way. Nor is there a way to put the data back into the database using the MAPI client interfaces that will result in the same view again. Microsoft has not provided a separate API that will make a fully reversible backup/restore work on a single mailbox level.
