I've tried that, it comes up that the page cannot be desplayed. I have IIS

would be nice if it worked perfect the first time and then you got to play
with errors. But when you don't know what to expect or do for your first

True...true..

ACI, I'm with everyone else.. You have a DNS problem. NO DNS, NO outbound email.
Do you have your ISP's IP address listed in your Exchange DNS settings? How do desktops use DNS? If your unsure, find a server in your domain(preferably a PDC, BDC) and check it's DNS settings. Also try to web access something from that domain server. If you can get to a web site, then copy those DNS settings to the Exchange box and cycle the MSEXCHANGE IMS service and mail should fly outta there.

Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. Yahoo may or not reply depending on which server you get from the lookup.

For example, I get a different IP and it wont reply.

Exchange 5.5 SP4 using Outlook 98. NT 4.0 SP6a

I have a user who sent a meeting request to four people this morning.
She received a message back from the System Administrator account

this afternoon saying two of the recipeints could not be contacted.

However, the two recipients listed were NOT even invited on the

initial request. Not only were they not invited, but they are no

longer even members of the company, so I don't see where they could

have "accidentally" been invited. There not in USRMGR or the

Global Address list. This makes me wonder how many other people

received the invitation that ARE part of the company but aren't

one of the four members that should have been invited. When I go

back to the original message, there are only four individual people

listed. Baffling.

This user also occasionally has mail get stuck in her OUTBOX, which

is probably a totally separate issue. I find 6 or 7 reasons in

technet that could be causing this issue, but I just thought I

would throw the information in, just in case it rang a bell with

somebody else.

Anybody ever have a meeting request issue like this?

Thanks.

Robert

can't send message on behalf

2002-01-24 Thread Mitchell Mike

Good afternoon,

Outlook 98 Exchange 5.5 sp4..

I have a delegate that is trying to REPLY to a message from the mailbox.
When they try and send the message they get 'you do not have permission of
the individual to send this email' message.

I looked at Google and it says to give the delegate Owner permissions to the
Inbox. I have done that and I still get the same message.

Please help.

Probably a DNS issue.
Find one of the offending domains. FROM THE EXCHANGE SERVER, do an Nslookup.

Thanks.

Personally, I would make them part of your AD structure and perform all

Personally IMNSHO, if you're not sure of what you need to do, it sounds to

use the information store for them.(they can't access public folders or keep

part of our domain. When I do a trace route they never find the exchange

use the same login. (big security problem)Do I need to add a route in a

RE: outgoing mail

2002-01-24 Thread Bert Macias

I had a similar issue recently after dealing with an open relay. Even after
closing up the relay, my outbound queue would not deliver mail until the
queue was brought down to a reasonable number of messages (I believe it
started delivering mail again when the number came down to a few hundred...I
originally had 48,000 msgs!!). According to a PSS call to MS the IMS
can get bogged down and stop delivering (even though the service may still
be receiving inbound mail) mail...

Re: Success (or failure) running Exch 5.5. on W2k

2002-01-24 Thread Michael Reid

Point taken. What I'm trying to do is experimental. I don't have the funds
for another machine to toy with at the present. So this is what I have:

Machine on net with IP.
DNS on machine that is authoritative.
mx pointer pointing to machine name.
Exchange 5.5 installed
W2K sp2 installed
Ex5.5 sp 3 (I think) installed

It's also a webserver for the experimentation also. I know, a lot of
services on one machine, but again, it's for testing and learning.

I'll go and reinstall the IIS and uncheck teh SMTP when I get home. Where is
the best ONLINE source for what to do next. I've installed 5.5 but how do I
really use it, such as getting OWA to work, having a user connect from
outside, etc. Thanks.

Always learning

RE: ESEUTIL DEFRAGS LIMITATIONs

2002-01-24 Thread Woodrick, Ed

How long is your time window?

Dependent on the I/O capabilities of your system, it could take a few
days to compress a 60GB store. You can roughly judge the speed by
looking at the size of the temp DB during the process. It will slowly
grow to about 47GB before it completes.

60GB isn't something to toy with. At absolute fastest transfer speeds, a
60GB file would take about 2 hours to transfer across a 100MB network
link. Your internal I/O might be a little faster, but not by a whole
lot.

And by the way, your database should be defragmented every evening. Two
runs for each database. What you are attempting to do is to compress the
database by creating a copy with no whitespace in it.

2002-01-24 Thread Benjamin Winzenz

You are really better off running OWA on a different box than Exchange.
That's really what it was designed for. Second, if you uninstall the SMTP
Service from IIS, it will NOT shut down the Exchange services. They are
completely separate. But you do need to actually uninstall it, not just
shut it down. Re-install IIS, and choose to add/remove components, then
just remove the SMTP Service.

When you say shut down the smtp service, is that after or before the

Re: Success (or failure) running Exch 5.5. on W2k

2002-01-24 Thread Michael Reid

I've installed my first 5.5 on W2k. Can't seem to get the hang of what to do
next. OWA comes up with a permission error connecting to the /exchange site.
When you say shut down the smtp service, is that after or before the
install. If I shut it down now, will that be shutting down the exchanges
service?

outgoing mail

2002-01-24 Thread aci

I currently have a problem with outgoing mail. Nothing is going through.
I have incoming mail being sent to the users. but their out going mail is
being queued at the internet mail service. It states that the message
will continue to be retried until the configured maximum timeout period.

Right. Try something like usrstat.exe from the RK.

RE: front end servers and back end servers

2002-01-24 Thread Benjamin Winzenz

AFAIK, it should be roughly the same as it is for 5.5. Insert CD, run
setup. Setup will detect that you already have Exchange installed, and will
simply re-copy the files, which will then make it Enterprise.

I have seen past AA, who had delegate access to the mailbox. Whenever the

would bounce back. As soon as I removed this name, the problem was gone.

Thanks.

Robert

2002-01-24 Thread Dahl, Peter

Check the Outlook client on the users that the message was sent to. They
probably have old Delegate information in there so the request is being
forwarded to their former admin who is no longer with the company thus
returning the NDR.

Hope that helps.

Your routing to the network which the server resides on is not correct.
Maybe not even configured... Are these remote offices a part of your AD
Forest?

Subject: exchange 1 domain 2 subnets

Hope someone out there can help!!
I am running exchange2000 on my corp network,no problem there everyone sends
& receives mail fine. I have been asked to include our retail stores to our
exchange server. I have been able to pop mail for the retail stores, but not
use the information store for them.(they can't access public folders or keep
their mail on the server) The retail stores are on a different subnet & not
part of our domain. When I do a trace route they never find the exchange
server nor the Doms.Adding them to the domain will not work because they all
use the same login. (big security problem)Do I need to add a route in a
router or is this a issue with them not being on the domain Thanks Brien

I agree with Ben, the original question was "how do you get a list of NT users logged in to the domain at any
point in time?"  This only shows you who is
connected to whatever computer share you are connected to at the
time.

Trend Interscan Viruswall 5.01

2002-01-24 Thread Michael Dopps

Anyone using the new Trend SMTP Interscan Viruswall?

Got a problem hope anyone can help with...

Im having this problem with the new version 5.01. It has this HOP count
setting that it trys to check before sending any internet bound email how
many HOPs it will take to deliver the message. The default is 15. No
matter what I have set this to, several domains we normally send to return
NDR (nondeliverable, back to me). If I telnet port 25 into the MX record
any one of those domains, from the same box interscan is running, I can
send emails just fine. If I try to trace route one of those it always
runs to 30 hops and times out.

Anyone know how to turn this HOP count off so it will deliver anyway, or
have ANY suggestions??

NDR error:
:XXX:::XXX 0 (00120345) Too Many Hops

Thanks,
Mike

Meeting Request Confusion

2002-01-24 Thread McCready, Robert

Thanks.

Robert

At least that is what is says in my exchange

RE: ESEUTIL DEFRAGS LIMITATIONs

2002-01-24 Thread Benjamin Winzenz

You still didn't mention whether the drive you added has "at least" 60gb of
free space. Assuming it does, what is stopping you from simply running the
Performance optimizer to move the databases off the current drive, then
expand the drive, then move them back by running Optimizer again? You do
realize that running the defrag will likely take 12+ hours just by itself,
during which time your server will be offline?

Subject: RE: ESEUTIL DEFRAGS LIMITATIONs

We have another drive we have added for the defrag and we need to defrag the
database because there is only 300mb of free space on the database drive and
to expand the disk, we need to move the database of the disk and expand them
move it back.

Subject:RE: ESEUTIL DEFRAGS LIMITATIONs

Here is a snippet from Q272234 that tells you about offline defragmentation.

"Generally, however, avoid offline defragmentation because it is an
expensive procedure. When offline defragmentation runs, it creates a new
database file and then copies all the data in the old file to the new file,
which can take a long time. On average, it takes about one hour to
defragment 5 to 10 GB of disk space. Also, you need enough free space for
the offline defragmentation process to hold the new file. As a general rule,
you should have 100 percent more free space than the amount you are
defragmenting."

So the question then begs whether you have the free space to even
perform the defrag. May I also ask why you feel that it is so completely
necessary to defragment your database? Is there a problem with the server?
Is it not running smoothly? Are you anticipating that it will never grow
larger? Basically, all you are doing with eseutil is reclaiming the white
space. That is it. White space simply explained is just space in the
database that is not currently being used, but will be used as the database
grows. Since the space has already been reserved, your server does not have

Does anyone know what if any the limitations of the ESEUTIL are for Exchange

Has anyone ever done this before?
Is there any other third party tools that can be used to defrag our

What would you recommend?

Hello All,

Win2ksrv sp2, Ex55sp4

Yesterday I completed an Ed Crowley Server move to a new box...everything
seems to be ok, however, sometimes the IS and IMS will terminate
unexpectedly with error ID 7031, I have to reboot the server to get it
running again, this has happenned twice in the last 4 hours...just before I
have to reboot, the server starts to slow down (hardware is 750mhz, 768mb
memory)...this server only has 25 users running out of it. Are there any
default services that I should make sure doesn't start or should disable?

RE: ESEUTIL DEFRAGS LIMITATIONs

2002-01-24 Thread James Chris L

Are you anticipating that it will never grow
larger? Basically, all you are doing with eseutil is reclaiming the white
space. That is it. White space simply explained is just space in the
database that is not currently being used, but will be used as the database
grows. Since the space has already been reserved, your server does not have
to work nearly as hard to procure more space and increase the size of the
database.

Thanks for the reply.  I did try the bcc option but if you click on the
recipients name it resolves to the correct name - i.e. if John Smith is in
the TO:  when you click on it you get the properties for John Smith.  In my
case, when you click on the name it resolves to Dave Jones.   When I tracked
the message, the message had the recipient as Dave Jones but on the email
message itself the recipient was John Smith.  Be kind people - but I still
don't understand how this is happening.

It also happens when the email was Bcc'ed to someone. The Bcc recipients

use the information store for them.(they can't access public folders or keep
their mail on the server) The retail stores are on a different subnet & not
part of our domain. When I do a trace route they never find the exchange
server nor the Doms.Adding them to the domain will not work because they all
use the same login. (big security problem)Do I need to add a route in a
router or is this a issue with them not being on the domain Thanks Brien

It also happens when the email was Bcc'ed to someone. The Bcc recipients

I have a case where User JSmith received an email in her inbox that was
addressed in the TO: field to KJones. When I clicked on the TO: field the
smtp address was user's JSmith's ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). I tracked messages
for JSmith and KJones and the log said the message was only for JSmith.
This was unsolicited email. The ceo wants an explanation of how this could
happen. In a fuzzy way, I think I know but can someone give me a good
explanation I can use.

I just inherited an installation of Exchange 5.5. on W2k, with about 50
users. It was configured poorly (e.g. the installer didn't bother
disabling IIS's SMTP services!).

Before I take the time to fix it up, just wanted to take a poll of
whether people were satisfied with Exch 5.5 on W2k servers. Whether
that setup has worked well for people, or caused particular problems,
focusing on stability. I saw a couple of ringing endorsements in this
forum about two weeks ago. Any offsetting sob stories I should know
about?

If it doesn't work well we could upgrade to Exchange 2000. But for this
firm wouldn't particularly care about the advantages--unless it's more
stable.

Thanks,

RE: ESEUTIL DEFRAGS LIMITATIONs

2002-01-24 Thread Benjamin Winzenz

Are you anticipating that it will never grow
larger? Basically, all you are doing with eseutil is reclaiming the white
space. That is it. White space simply explained is just space in the
database that is not currently being used, but will be used as the database
grows. Since the space has already been reserved, your server does not have
to work nearly as hard to procure more space and increase the size of the
database.

60gb on some of our servers. One of these databases has 13gb of free space

to complete in the time window every time.

Does anyone know what if any the limitations of the ESEUTIL are for Exchange

Has anyone ever done this before?
Is there any other third party tools that can be used to defrag our
database?
What would you recommend?

Judging by your 60GB DB, you need at least twice that in disk space to run
ESEUTIL. That means, to run ESEUTIL at all, you need at least 120GB and I
would say a little more to be safe for it to run.

I need an expert advice about the implications of moving transaction log
files onto a different physical harddrive when exchange is already setup as
a production state. I have read that if the log files are separated with
the database files, backup recovery will not work. Besides that, are there
any drawbacks on moving log files? Thanks alot.

I need an expert advice about the implications of moving transaction log
files onto a different physical harddrive when exchange is already setup
as a production state. I have read that if the log files are separated
with the database files, backup recovery will not work. Besides that, are
there any drawbacks on moving log files? Thanks alot.

I just inherited an installation of Exchange 5.5. on W2k, with about 50
users. It was configured poorly (e.g. the installer didn't bother disabling
IIS's SMTP services!).

Before I take the time to fix it up, just wanted to take a poll of whether
people were satisfied with Exch 5.5 on W2k servers. Whether that setup has
worked well for people, or caused particular problems, focusing on
stability. I saw a couple of ringing endorsements in this forum about two
weeks ago. Any offsetting sob stories I should know about?

If it doesn't work well we could upgrade to Exchange 2000. But for this
firm wouldn't particularly care about the advantages--unless it's more
stable.

Thanks,

email show the To: of the person to whom the email was sent.

addressed in the TO: field to KJones.

You could always check for the presence of the "Front End" tick-box on
the server properties in ESM, or better still look for event IDs 1216
and 1217 in the event log.

I need an expert advice about the implications of moving transaction log
files onto a different physical harddrive when exchange is already setup
as a production state. I have read that if the log files are separated
with the database files, backup recovery will not work. Besides that, are
there any drawbacks on moving log files? Thanks alot.

RE: relocate transaction log files

Exchange 5.5 - run the Performance Optimiser.
Exchange 2000 - make the changes in ESM, stores will dismount etc.

It's recommended to move the logs to a separate drive. If you're really
worried, make a backup before and after.
