I thought I would post the response we received from Microsoft regarding this issue. It would seem the filters.txt file is nothing more than a decoy. Read on. About the Junk, Adult and exception rules, for Exchange Server users, they are stored on the Exchange Server. The rules only run when Outlook opens, because the filter behavior is controlled by a local Outlook DLL file. As for the filters.txt file, it only describes the rules for you not Outlook. The actual criteria are burned into that DLL where you can't (without a hex editor) change them. You also mentioned the Exception list. Since you are in the Exchange environment, the general syntax may not work. If a user has the email address: [EMAIL PROTECTED] which is provided by Exchange Server. To use the address correctly in the Exception list, please try the following steps:1. Find the users email in your inbox2. Right click it, select Junk E-mail - Add to Junk Senders list3. Click Tools - Organize, click Junk email4. Click the "click here" link5. Click the Edit Junk Senders link6. You will note that Outlook needs a specific Exchange Server user address for Exchange Users as the Junk sender email address. Click Edit. Copy the address. Click OK. Delete the address in the list. Click OK.7. Now you can set the specific address in the Exception List.According to our experience, we do not recommend the Junk email feature for because sometimes it overworks. The best way is to customize our own rule to meet the specifications of your mailbox, in this way, we can get better results. Actually, all the Outlook Junk email features are specific rules. Personally, I do not think it's better than the rule we customize ourselves. Please check the above information. Hello all, I'm hoping the guru's can give me a hand here. Can anyone explain to me how rules work in Exchange. I'm not looking for the novice end user answer, I mean where do they live on the server? What the difference is between client and server, besides the obvious. What I'm looking for is an explanation of how they really work, or better yet a good document explaining it. For example, if you have a rule setup that says all Adult content goes to the trash with the exception of "X", how does Exchange interrupt that data? How does Exchange decide what is and what isn't adult content? mail-enabled contact...
Sorry guys I know this is a stupid question, but I am working for a new company, tomorrow is day 2. From what I can find on technet/google articles, I can use a mail-enabled contact to forward messages coming tomy domain to another domain, ie [EMAIL PROTECTED] forwards to [EMAIL PROTECTED]. I don't think I would have to setup a mailbox, but figured I would check with you guys. I have done some testing, and this does seem to work fine without the mailbox, but my boss wants to KNOW that this is how it is supposed to work, not just working for some "mysterious" unknown magical force, ie the "Laser Guided Packet-Finder." I have only been able to test this on my lan, as I am currently migrating from BSDI 4.2 Sendmail with Qpopper to Exchange 2000 sp2 with the exact same domain name. When I give the go, hopefully by Wednesday, I need to have this live andrunning. Let me know what you think Thanks, Mike Z (Formally of Exchange 5.5 sp3 on NT4) :) List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm

Re: mail-enabled contact...
Thanks for the reply, but haveyou by chance read this in an article or KB? I just know my boss and would like to present him with hard facts. How long have you been using/used this method for forwarding mail? If you don't do it like this anymore, do you just create a mailbox and create a mail-enabled contact to forward to? My boss thinks it is best to do the mailbox and contact, but I think it's just waiting for more problems to happen. Thanks again Joe - Original Message - From: Joe L. Or use Exmerge to export specific folders or messages by date. You could move that content to another Exchange server within a public folder hierarchy. The external storage, like that of Veritas, removes attachments from the store and leaves the messages with pointers to an external database. 8GB is not bad. Mine is 65GB. Is there anyway that I can archive certain messages or folders to an offline storage area? I know I can archive whole mailboxes, but my situation is that I have some large folders, some with 60,000+ emails, and I'd like to take, say, the oldest 50,000 and move them out of the Exchange database and into a file that would reside on our file server, where there's lots of space. I don't need these to be readily available, but ideally there would be a way I could use some program (maybe OL itself?) to browse through those messages if need be. We're using Ex 5.5 and OL 2000. I know about programs like Veritas Remote Storage, and while that looks like a nice solution that would do a lot of things, it also costs $3500. Any ideas that may be cheaper?
