RE: POP3 service not on by default on Exchange 2010

2012-04-10 Thread Matt Moore
I just like to say no to pop whenever I can. It's a constant thorn in the
side for apps (and customers) that must use it. It's normally followed
shortly by a "what do mean all my mail is gone?". =)

The default (on a per mailbox) has been enabled "forever".

If you want to change that, use a cmdlet extension agent.

Security.

Traditionally POP3 uses passwords in clear text. In order for that NOT to
happen, you've got to first install and configure a certificate. Then you
can enable the service.

Alternately, you must modify the configuration to accept cleartext passwords
and enable the service.

Either one requires a conscious decision on the part of the Exchange
administrator.

Is there a reason, besides reducing system overhead, that the POP3 service
isn't started by default on Exchange 2010?

Don't know for sure, but at a guess it would be security, since unless
you're using POP-S or something similar POP passwords are sent in the
clear.

RE: control of SMTP submissions

2012-04-10 Thread Campbell, Rob
Assuming that Receive connector is on its own IP address:

I’d set those two addresses up as Contacts, then use a transport rule that
checks for a Received header that matches a text pattern of the IP address of
the Receive connector. Bounce or drop any email except if it to one of those
allowed addresses.

We have several document scanners that as part of their valid business use send
emails to external recipients (i.e. exactly two unique external addresses), and
our security architect would like to ensure that no other recipients can be
sent to using this device. I have set up a receive connector to restrict
access based on the sender’s IP address, but I don’t see how to regulate HUB
traffic based on the Receive Connector. The device in question allows users in
the know to edit the sender’s address and the recipient address.

Any suggestions or pearls of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in
