RE: Do I do this on our Exchange 2007 system? Or where? In our DNS set-up?

2011-04-07 Thread Holstrom, Don
Well, I called our DNS site/record holder, aplus.net, and after talking with
several of their people, they said it wasn't their call, rather it was our T-1
provider. We use dual, locked T-1s for our Internet/e-mail connection here
since we own the entire block so cannot yet get a high-speed cable connection
without a lot of dough. We are a non-profit.

So I called Covad, they are on the West Coast, probably warmer out there, and
three people later, they said that yes they were the ones who did this, (add
the spf record) but no, they didn't/would not do it. (Figure that one out.) I
further explained our problem to the third person, he was actually with Covad,
not just a support person, and he said we need to get someone from Convio to
call them directly and they will see what they can do.

The hits just keep on coming!

This is from our Convio e-mailers, they are being blocked in sending some of
our e-mails. They said we needed to do this. I work with two other firms using
external e-mails, no problem. I don't agree, but...

How do SPF records need to be set up for an organization using Convio?
The "From" address in email marketing sent from Convio will typically use an
Internet domain owned by the Convio client in question. To pass a Sender ID
check, SPF records which
identify Convio as a legitimate source of email need to be published by each
client in the DNS for each domain they use in "From" lines in email marketing.
Determining what the complete SPF policy should be for a domain is a matter for
each organization's IT team; however, Convio offers the following guidance:
IF your organization operates its own office email server AND Convio is the
only service that sends email on your organization's behalf, then the following
SPF record will meet
your needs:
v=spf1 +mx +include:outboundmail.convio.net ?all
An SPF-based spam filter will translate this as: "Servers specifically allowed
to send mail are (i) our inbound mail server(s), and (ii) Convio's servers. For
mail from any other source, treat
it as if this SPF record was never published."

Installing the SSL certificate on Exchange 2007

2010-12-01 Thread Holstrom, Don
Mr. Smith did this for me a year or two ago. Now I have a new Exchange server.
I bought a new cert from GoDaddy, but what they are recommending is not easy
for me, so...

Are there any better installation instructions?

Does it matter if he slipstreams SP3 into Exchange, or can/should he get the

Outlook 2010 searches are different/wrong

2010-09-24 Thread Holstrom, Don
I upgraded one of our users from Office 07 to Office 10. In Outlook, searches
come up with different answers. Very light answers. All other upgrades have
been fine.

I have Exchange server 07, both this workstation and server are updated. This
does not happen in other users. For example, in one folder on my workstation I
have 2,000 e-mails and searches are just about immediate. He has over 6,000 in
his Inbox and searches are just wrong, certainly not hitting every e-mail. Are
there settings that can be changed to fix this? He has a laptop, with XP and
only about 512 RAM. I am using 64-bit W7 with 8 gigs of RAM, so this may not be
a fair comparison.

I'll second (third?) that. While MBS and I don't always agree about
Microsoft's design decisions and company politics, his technical
knowledge about stuff -- especially Exchange -- is top-notch. Even
better, he's willing to invest significant time and effort in sharing
that with others. He's a huge benefit to the Exchange community. If
I wore a hat, it would be off to him.

Which Tech.Ed Give-away Item would you like?

As you know, Tech.Ed is a big deal for Sunbelt. This year, we are
going to give away a 'VIPRE theme' Ducati high-performance bike.
We'll also give away items with each 15-minute product presentation.
Which of these 'presentation' give-away items would you like to get?

They have non-profit discounts, but even with those I don't know if their

One of our people has asked about this. They have lists that go over 10,000 and
although we run Exchange 2007, I think that is too large for us. Not sure,
though. I am looking for a good (but cheap) mailer. They would be fairly simple
e-mails. Any ideas?

I put this on another list, but it was not an Exchange list...

whitelisting sites

2010-01-21 Thread Holstrom, Don
This is not something I enjoy doing, but I have been asked to white list:
bisnow.com; icontact.com; and icpbounce.com. One of our internal people said he
is now not receiving any Bisnow newsletters, and he wants to. The last of the
three sites does not come up on my IE8.

Is this something I should do? And if so, what is the best way? I am using
Exchange 2007.

Some Exchange/Outlook steps needed?

2010-01-13 Thread Holstrom, Don
Too much e-mail keeps hanging around. I have heard that some firms back up
their users' C: drives. Weekly or monthly. This means that the user could
listen to the Outlook request to archive old items, taking it off the Exchange
server. Of course, if they need to see an archived e-mail, they bring it back
in to their Outlook, and there it stays

I have just added a new Exchange server, moving up to 2007, and gave all my
users (less than a hundred) increased sizing. We have no date limit, either. I
could set up the auto archiving to go to one of their folders on a file server.
Don't know if I want to do that, though. Our file server already grows larger
by the day.

What do some of you do for this? I have some users who would never delete
anything if I gave them this option...
