RE: MS crop tool for PST files

2001-10-03 Thread Matthew Western

we have the same problem here.
1. Separate into years (1999.pst, 2000.pst, 2001.pst)
2. archive old years to CD
3. put the old years .pst files to the hard drive some place where they
can't find them and open them in mail folders and don't back them up to the
file server..that way you can search the file server for .pst files and
if one appears like 1999.pst you can just blow it away knowing that it's on
their CDs in their drawer...

Meanwhile, it seems like half our customers just have an Inbox with

RE: queue.bad

2001-10-02 Thread Matthew Western

seems like no one's ansewring the original question just sending ppl to
rooms.. NTBackup with the exchange .dll (which can be installed by just
installing the exch admin prog) backs up the whole infostore and directory
and works very nicely. it can't recover one mailbox at a time you have to
have a recovery server. you shouldn't need to restore ever, archive old
mailboxes to .pst and CD it, hide old mailboxes for a month or so, set
deleted items retention to as much as possible (calc how much mail goes thru
server etc etc before doing this or your drive will fill up, we set ours to
10 days thinking no probs, but got an extra 1.5gb roughly so maybe change it
slowly over a period of time. try 5 days then 10 etc etc...

NTBackup doesn't do brick level backups but brick level backups are bad
according to Guru Ed crowely... www.swinc.com he also says pst are bad but
i disagree cos .pst is good for archival onto CDs... anyway starting to
rant.s

Does anyone use the native NTBACKUP utility on their EX 5.5 installations
to backup their Exchange IS's online? Recently Microsoft recommended we use
the native NTBACKUP utility to do the page layer online backups. Just
looking for input from anyone on this list currently doing this, rather than
going to a 3rd party application for backups.

Also, do any of you know if individual mailboxes can be restored when using
NTBACKUP as the backup solution? I'm not sure on this aspect, but I would
suspect not, I don't think NTBACKUP does brick layer backups.

Thanks for any input you have,

I must admit, I've not heard of queue.bad

It will be ok to delete it as far as I know. You can even delete queue.dat,
as the IMS creates a new one when it starts (although you don't need to in
this case).

I've got win2k/exch2k(soon) happening on a box. I'm tryhing to get a

you know what annoys me is that the default for public folders is not
invisible. any Tom Dick and Harry can make public folders which is good but
they should be invisible by default so there is not 17 zillion in accessable

actually replicated. crappy design.

Hello All,

I did a little research, but didn't find anything...I remember reading that
there is a process that removes permission's to pub folders periodically
based on account status (ie deleted, removed). Was I dreaming?? (hopefully
not about exchange). What I have are a bunch of left over admin names
listed in the permission's for pub folders. Not a big deal, just
annoying...

There is an exception to the rule (well maybe not an
exception, but I can't think of the right word)
and that is that the Backoffice CAL will no longer be available after October 1st and you will need to get CAL
'Core' packs which I believe will be more
expensive. Backoffice CAL's were the cheapest way to get EX, SQL NT Cals together.

We are currently running Exchange 5.5 with a mix of SP4 and SP3.

Yes some users work fine, others dont. This appears to be site specific.
We have 17 sites and about half of them are working.

I was leaning torwards a permissions issue as we have had some problems
with not all users showing up in the address book although all entries
show in teh GAL through the Exg Admin program. This we had to resolve by
granting the \Everyone group Search rights at the organization and the
Site level.

All true.

I'd want to play with it just cause I can. We know more about the script
kiddies than they know about us. Oooo... Netcraft...

It's the hackers I'd worry about, and they could care less what your port 25

Q:

How do you change the Exchange banner that appears when you telnet to the
exchange box on port 25?? I have heard that you must hex edit a .dll but do
not know which .dll to edit?? Anyone know??

A:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q281/2/24.asp in e2k

5.5

I can speak only for version 5.5:

For port 25, the strings that need to be edited (with something like
WinHex) are found in /exchsrvr/connect/msexcimc/bin/msexcimc.exe.
For port 110, the strings are in /exchsrvr/bin/store.exe.

As pointed out, you will have to redo the strings after you apply a
service pack. Also, be careful editing store.exe. I strongly
recommend knowledge of C programming for changing the strings since
the printf parameters are found in the strings (i.e. %s, %i). If you
overwrite the first one, you most likely will align a wrong argument
(try printing a long with %s :) in which case the process calls the
doctor (Watson that is).

I wouldn't say that. Deception and misinformation has always been
used in the intelligence community as part of their security posture
enhancement.

Yes, changing banners doesn't make you secure by fixing problems.
Bugs don't go away. But banner grabbing is often done by automated
tools, services (i.e. NetCraft), or individuals. Making it harder for
them to identify your systems does increase security posture. (I
have used this on MS IIS successfully. Netcraft had listed a site as
running Koyote web server... hehe).

Most of the rest is just noise.

All true.

I'd want to play with it just cause I can. We know more about the script
kiddies than they know about us. Oooo... Netcraft...

It's the hackers I'd worry about, and they could care less what your port 25
telnet banner says.

(try printing a long with %s :) in which case the process calls the

typical microsnot they all do things differently. what we did was
indeed deleting the IMC and recreating it... well not quite, but restarting
the IMC with all the files renamed fixed the problem...

my question is, where can i get this tool that logs into the IMC mailbox and
removes the message? how can one hope that it won't happen again?

last question. when will someone write program that sends mis formed
messages to exchange servers and thus crashes the server??? dorks

anybody want to mail me that IMC tool referred here, pls? thanks

It's not that someone has figured out how to send misformatted messages
so much as sometimes messages just get malformed mail headers that in
turn wind up crashing the IS. The fix PSS gave you is a strange one
though. I can't remember (GAWD, I HATE IT WHEN I CAN'T REMEMBER THINGS)
the tools they gave me to fix the problem off hand, but the fix they
gave you doesn't sound right.
Their utilities they gave me actually allowed me to login to the IMC
like a mailbox and remove the offending message, restart the IS and IMC
and all was well. Took about 5 minutes to fix the problem.
With the fix you got, you might was well have deleted and recreated the
IMC...
