Management is trying to find ways to prevent a disgruntled employee from
sending emails to specific distribution lists. I can setup 'Message
Delivery Restrictions' or 'Message Moderation', but that won't prevent the
disgruntled employee from using the + in Outlook to expand the members of
 the distribution list.

My other option is to hide the distribution list from the GAL to prevent
the + from expanding the members, but that would inconvenience other users
who need to send to the hidden distribution list if they don't already have
 it in their nickname cache.

I'm out of ideas and would like to hear creative ideas from my fellow

Turn on moderation and disable the + usage then.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\[14.0][12.0]\Outlook\Options\Mail\DisableDLExpansion=1

Or change the DL's to dynamic...I THINK dynamics cannot be expanded. Test that
idea.

Nothing is going to be perfect, they can still grab from the GAL.then you
put limits on numbers of recipientsthen they send multiple messages or
forward all the addresses to their gmail accountnon-ending battle. So be
sure to clarify to the powers that be is all you can do is make it harder on

Thanks to all for the various inputs. I have my Account Manager my TAM
researching internally as well. The Trust Center is a good start. I don't
need to answer the question, just be a resource for information - it is up
to someone above my paygrade to make the determination of how the users in
various locations will be handled or if we are compliant with a specific
country's policies. All has been gathered and will be passed on to Legal
for a review - they may need to get German counsel involved as well. Who
knows!

In particular it seems for privacy, in particular her personal
information or computer information isn't 'at Microsoft's disposal' as they
clearly state when they will/won't it.

I also wonder whether this user has a Hotmail account or ever emailed
anyone with a Hotmail account, as that would appear to give MS more
personal information than a company account could?

With a company email account you don't *have* to use it for personal
use, and unless you have particularly uncommon name, even the Googles of
the world aren't going to be able to link it to your personal identity. So
it could just be the name, which they are making public when they email
 externally, anyway?

I agree about passing it to legal, but give them as much info as you
can. Lots of other companies have went through this before choosing Office
365 and it's predecessors. For example in the UK including Scotland, lots
of Universities were being asked these types of questions by academics and
 students before moving to Live@Edu.

There are only two contacts on the backups, both of which are in her

Plugging away on my 2007 to 2010 upgrade. It is going very well
actually. But I have one odd issue. A pure OWA user that I migrated from
2007 to 2010. She claims she lost all her contacts. My first thought was
that it was autocomplete she lost so I asked her to show me how she used
to get to her contacts. She instantly hit her contacts icon and said
'look, there are only two there'. So that is the odd part, two of her
old contacts are there but there are a bunch missing.

Any guesses where they went? I am a bit stunned. Is there any other way
she could have hooked contacts into OWA that I don't know about?

You can find the whitepaper that discusses the Hotmail move to Windows. It's
available for download at Microsoft.com/downloads.

The product you are thinking of is MCIS - Microsoft Commercial Internet System.
It was supposed to be integrated into Exchange/IIS with Project Mercury.
Effectively, it was replaced by HMC, but all of the goals of Mercury weren't
realized until Exchange Hosting Mode was released with Exchange 2010.

Subject: Problem with Outlook

I was called in by another tech who had some problems with a new network
that had just been installed. The server is SBS 2003 R2 with the
included Exchange 2003, patched. The Outlook client is the one included
with Office
2007 on XP Pro. All patches are reported to have been installed. About
half of the workstation have a problem where outlook will open, and
then, shortly thereafter freeze. I did not see it freeze until a message
was opened. It never seems to register as unresponsive in Task Manager.
The machines are running Symantec's End Point Security. Outlook behaves
the same with it running or with it uninstalled. I did note that each
time outlook started it would flash, for the briefest time, the same
messages one would see on a fresh install, though they would normally
stay up much longer on a first time use. The appearance is so brief it
took several start-ups to understand what they were. I turned off cached
mode--same thing. I removed the OST file and started in cached mode, and
it seemed to take longer than normal for it to start receiving messages
from the server and building the cache (35 MB on the machine I was
working on). I created a new profile. I removed the account and then
added it back again--same behavior in getting the messages and building
the cache.

A little more background information. The owner of the business had
bought a server from a used equipment dealer next door, and it was set
up and shortly thereafter crashed. A brand new server was purchased
(which should have been the case to start, but, the urge to save money
can be over-powering for the small guy) and the install was done on it,
along with a restore of the Information Store. This was done after a
repair to the old server failed to work properly.

The workstations were rejoined to the domain. I am a bit fuzzy whether
he actually tried to remove any from the original domain (of the same
name) or not. Now, some of the machines suffer from the problem in the
first paragraph.

I asked about removing and installing the whole Office Suite again, and
that had been tried, along with a repair prior to

I want to have a stand-by Exchange box that can act as a fail-over in the

accomplished by clustering. Google has a zillion links about
Windows/Exchange clustering so I was hoping the experts here could recommend

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Environment is W2K3 Servers and Exchange 2003, clients are a mixture of O2K3
