RE: CA becoming more responsive

2001-11-15 Thread Sanborn, John

Having a VP calling does not say much other 'we have do something to APPEAR
to be improving'. Once the low-level techs start improving then it would be
something worth looking into. Otherwise, it's all so much P.R. propaganda.

The fact that someone called you is impressive. It's a big maybe, though,
that we will go back to them. But I think not. Because of their ARCServe
product, our disaster recovery became a running joke. Being a Financial
Banking firm where down time can cost us as much as $1 million bucks an
hour, I for one am not willing to wear my career on my sleeve or the
viability of a good Arcserve backup/recovery.

Hi, all,

Thought I'd share with you my notes on this (surprising) new contact i just
had with the Computer Associates VP of Technical Support. Though I had been
a vocal critic of CA's tech support in the past, even back when I was an SE,
I thought I was a lightweight when it came to CA-bashing on this list. So I
was surprised when I got a call from their VP/TS, especially since he was
calling from the east coast.

Anyway, let me just hit the high points for you ...

I told him my main complaints with CA products (ARCserve & Inoculan) were
lack of real-time tech support, and the nightmare of RegIT. He agreed.
Here are a few of the things he told me:

- CA has relaxed their registration code, so that now it does not disable
the service.

- They have beefed up their support staff, with an office in India with 100
techies, and now 80%+ of their calls actually get answered by a real tech
support person. Wow! I used to get the "take a number, we'll call you back
someday" runaround.

- Their knowledge base has been beefed up. I recall it used to be pretty
thin. I haven't checked it out yet.

Well, I was impressed that a high-level guy from CA is actually reaching out
to customers and people in the industry, and trying to respond to
criticisms. Maybe they have turned over a new leaf. I won't have the
opportunity to really evaluate them as we are a Backup Exec / Sophos /
Antigen shop, and being happy with these I'm not changing horses ... but
maybe some of you out there will revisit CA products and give them a fresh
chance.

Subject: Circular Logging
Importance: High

Hello All,

I have a question about a current situation that a client of mine is in.
They have an Exchange 5.5 SP2 server which has run out of space! They
originally had a tape drive installed on the server and was using Backup
Exec with the Exchange agent. they had circular logging enabled but it
wasn't a problem because they were backing up every night a the logs
were cleared. Now they recently implemented another server and had
ArcServe installed on it. They didn't want to maintain two backup apps
so they uninstalled BbackupEXec from the Exchange serve and maintained
the ArcServe. The ArcServe doesn't have an Exchange agent installed so
there is no current backup of that server except for any files on it. I
recommended that they get the ArcServe Exchange Agent.

AnyHoo, a couple of months ago they ran out of space and they called me.
I found out that it was due to not having a recent backup of Exchange
and the logs had taken all available space. At this time, backupexec was
still installed so I performed a backup and the space was cleared and
the server was able to be started again. Now last week they have come
across the same exact issue again and the tape drive has been removed
and BackupExec uninstalled. So all I could do was move some of the log
files to another server and again recommend that they get the ArcServe
Exchange Agent. now, they recently got hit with Goner and there back to
the space issue again. They have finally approved the Exchange agent but
we are waiting for it to be delivered. So right now, the server is down
because Exchange wont start due to lack of drive space. I cannot move
the log files anymore because the prior relocation took up the space on
another volume. I am thinking of disabling circular logging to let the
logs files not take up the space they are currently using. Is this a
wise move? What other options do I have. Any immediate answers would be
greatly appreciated! TIA!!!

RE: Brick Level Backups

2002-01-09 Thread Sanborn, John

BLB = backing up individual mailboxes
  1. Duplicates the full backup.
  2. Doubles or more the size and time of backups (lost Single Instance
Storage), and that's not even counting in the full backup.
  3. Some reports of it corrupting the DBs.
  4. With deleted item retention, it's unnecessary.

The Exchange agents allow you to do Online backups. Without them (or
Exchange version of NTBackup), you can only do an Offline backup. If you do
a non-Exchange aware backup with Exchange running the DBs are NOT backed up
because their files are in use. You'd have to shut Exchange down before the
backup.

I have seen posts from people stating that Brick Level Backups of
Exchange are bad. I was just discussing this with a fellow engineer and
wanted to find out the reason why the Brick Level Backups are bad. What
the issues with this type of Backup? If Brick level Backups are bad then
why purchase an Exchange Agent for whatever backup app thats being used
when you could just use a Open File Agent which should backup the Store
& Directory files. Any info would be appreciated. TIA!

RE: Simple Outlook Question

Just FYI ... you also use the first name to help match (bob s, b s, b smith)
would all pull up bob smith (and others if they match). And yes, it is
based off of display name, so you could embed something else in there to
match on (i.e. employee number, extension, office symbol, etc)

Subject: RE: Simple Outlook Question

This may or may not work for you, but this is what I have found...and
unfortunately I don't know the detailed mechanics of it to explain what
must or must not be enabled to get the same results...

When composing a new message I enter the fist few letters of a
recipients (already in global address book/contacts/or personal address
book) last name and move to the next appropriate field (CC, BCC,
Body...) and the email address is automagically inserted. When more than
one name is needed I separate them with commas. I do know that this
feature is an option (OL2K: Tools Menu, Options, Email Options, Advanced
Email Options, Check both allow comma as address separator AND automatic
name checking). If you have a lot of contacts this can be a tad slow,
but I have over 150 and about the same in the global address book and I
don't find it terrible.

Now for the first few times I send email to a contact that has multiple
stored items I have to right-click on that name (red zig-zag line under
name warns me there are multiple possibilities for this contact) and
select between say Bob Smith (E-mail) or Bob Smith (Fax) or Bob Smith
(Pager), etc. When I have done this, usually just once, the next time I
use that name (without opening an address book) it automagically
populates the email address for that contact.

I am not sure if clearing your personal history lists would affect this
as I have not seemed to notice anything, but I could be wrong. There may
also be more settings that are helping this happen that I am not aware
of. It works for me and I HATE opening an address book anyway.

Example for me would be a message to bob smith, caren jaques, jamie
hernandez, michael stone
I only enter smit, jaq, hern, ston and move to begin typing my message,
and the names complete themselves properly.

The more of the last name you enter the faster the search with an EXACT
hit - especially when there are similarly spelled last names (smith and
smithen are a good example).
Also this search appears to be keyed off of the DISPLAY NAME not the
actual email address. I change all contacts email addresses to use the
persons first and then last name as the display name.

Hope you have the same luck because THIS SAVES ME A TON OF TIME - I
would not use my email as much otherwise.
Daniel

I ran across the same issue with one of my users. Yes you can remove the

contents of the Fax field and email will no longer bring up the Fax
contact
but this also means that you can not store fax numbers in your contacts.
It
seems that there should be a way to disable the feature so you can
maintain
fax numbers for your contacts and not be forced to choose the email
contact
or fax contact every time you want to send an email to that contact.

RE: Looking for advice re HR Luser request

2002-03-26 Thread Sanborn, John

some thoughts in no particular odor ...

- If they don't like the Exchange solutions you give them, then tell them to
go setup their own email box ... (if only it would be that easy)

- If the postings are numbered in some kind of pattern, maybe do a import of
a month's worth of SMTP addresses in a single account. (i.e.
[EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED],
[EMAIL PROTECTED], etc) At least that would lessen the pain.

- You could set something up, but plead overwork and that they need to send
someone over who could type each individual address into the system ...

I agree with you and that's how they are currently doing it - single mailbox
that someone checks. I guess they are SOO overworked up there, that they
just don't have the time to continue doing it this way. ;-)

I agree. I don't like that idea either. But now they are reaping what they
sew, and it sounds like they don't want to do THEIR jobs.

Instead of doing any forwards or CRs, just create a single mailbox. Put
everything in there, and tell them how to open it to read mail. Then they
can do it at their convenience.

Running Exchange 5.5, SP4 on NT4 SP6a.

Our HR department currently has an email address set up for job postings so
people can email their resume. They are getting so many that they no longer
want to process them. What they want to do is create a new email address for
each posting that would go to the appropriate person in the department with
the opening.

The do not wish to use the following suggestions I gave to them:
1. Just use the email of the person in the department you want to receive
the resumes.
2. We could create a few distribution lists (for running multiple jobs at
once) and they can add and remove users at will.
3. They could set up rules on the current mailbox to route based on job
posting number or some other piece of information.

I don't like the idea of creating an email address every time they do a job
posting. So, I'm wondering if anyone else has had to deal with a similar
situation and if you found a workable solution.

TIA, MJ

  1.  Laptops

  A)  I have Users who sneak in laptops from home
(non-corporate), they are intelligent enough to connect to the exchange
servers.  I would hate to see one of these people bring their world
of home viruses onto my Exchange server.

  B) My AV solution on "roaming" laptops is not perfect yet, when I
have people out on the road a while, they seem to pick up viruses now and
then.  When they come back, or VPN or dial-up to the network, they
are able to spread their crap.

  2.  Internal Desktops:

  A)  In a perfect world, all the desktops are completely
protected at a local level.  But my experience has been that the
local PC AV solutions are less then perfect.  Again, I am afraid of
Users bringing their crap in from home on floppy's and
  CD-ROMS.

  3.  Remote Desktops

  A)  Home users using their own PC connected via VPN.
These people are directly connected to the LAN and are directly connecting
to the Exchange server.  I have no control of the garbage on their
  PC's.

I guess my primary concern is internal havoc.  I am scared
about people spreading things internally, example:

  1.  "Killer Virus" comes out.
  2.  The Firewall updates itself and begins protecting inbound
  SMTP
  3.  Luser at home gets infected from private
  Email
  4.  Connects to network via VPN, or Direct Dial to RAS
  Server.
  5.  Luser begins spreading "Killer Virus" via the Exchange
  server.
  6.  Internal Users begin suffering from this attack.
(Deleted files?  Corrupted MBR? ect. ect.
  ect.)
  7.  Exmerge is not going to help.

Depending on your environment, this scenario may not be applicable
to you, so perhaps I jumped the gun by saying
  "ridiculous".

RE: 2nd Exchange server

2002-07-14 Thread Sanborn, John

Like David implied, unless there's a need, I wouldn't worry about it much.
A properly setup Exchange box is a low maintenance thing. It'll happily sit
in the corner, plugging away. Just eyeball the event logs, disk space,
responsiveness and user complaints and fix the problems as they pop up.

A properly setup box would have the latest OS & Exch service packs and a
good Exchange anti-virus program. An Exchange aware backup program is a
good thing too, but you can get by with NTBackup.

If you get in a real bind, MS tech support is only $275 away and they'll
stay with you until the problem is solved. It's a cost, but when you have
two VPs breathing down your neck, it's worth it.

A second server would still be good to have for testing, playing (in Boss
terms 'OJT') and as a 'oh, shit' backup.

I have inherited a 2000 users Exchange 5.5 / NT4 server. I think it
makes sense to set up a 2nd server for any new user mailboxes and / or
move some existing user mailboxes to the new server as well. Is this a
daunting undertaking? Does it makes sense? Thanks from a newbie!

At
first I thought you were being a smart-ass about taking the server down during a
busy period, but thinking on it a bit more, that does make a lot of sense.
You get instant feed back on whether or not everything was move
successfully.

Thanks
for the tip.

  Personally...

  I would move all
mailboxes one at time. Slowly. Then I would setup the
connector and then kill the old connector. Wait for a few days and make sure
it's all up and running. Then in the middle of a busy day shut down the old
  server.

  Don't forget to
change the MX record to point to the new server.

  Someone on here has
the link to the Ed Crowley method. Kevin or William for
sure. Might ask them for that.

  So I
have decided to switch over my server this
  way

  Shut off
the mail connectors on the old server.

  Run the
exchange migrator to move all the old mail to the new
  server.

  Shut
  down the old server.

  Add the
netbios name and ip to the new server that were all the old
  one.

  Restart
the new server and hope that all the mail deliever goes ok and the clients can
  all see it ok.

  Then
have the mx record changed in a few days and drop the old
  ip.

  Anyone
see any problems with this idea?

I am trying to upgrade an NT4.0
Exchange 5.5 sp6 server that is in use full time to a Windows 2000 Exchange
2000 machine.
The exchange 5.5 server has been
used for some 5 years with no problems. The old server was misconfigured to
with a different netbios name from mx record, with aliases in the user
mailboxes.
I ran the exchange server
migration wizard and migrated the messages to the new mailboxes without
errors or warnings.
What I have and would like to
know...
oldserver
 netbios
= some_name dns =
another_name.subnet.domain.edu mx =
mail.subnet.domain.edu
newserver
 netbios
= newname dns =
newname.subnet.domain.edu

I would like to move the mx
record and start getting the mail delievered to the new server...am I going
to have problems?
Is there a way to syncronize the
2 servers so that mail is delievered between to 2 servers to the old and new
mailboxes?
I am afraid that I might miss
some messages durring the mx record changeover and will need to syncronize
them.
I am also worried about the
mailbox rules people have defined.

Works
great for us with both running.  As you said, just be very careful to
exclude the Exch directories.  Trust me on that one.  Unless you want

  For
what it is worth, we use both Norton CE and Norton for Exchange and it
works fine.  You just have to make sure to exclude the appropriate
  directories.

Installing NAV on Exchange 5.5 server
  Hello.
This issue may have been discussed before. If so, please
accept my apologies for having missed the
  discussions.
We are looking at installing Norton AntiVirus ver. 7.51
Build 847 on our Exchange 5.5 (SP4) servers to
scan the non database files.  This would be set up for real time scanning.
I have read and heard various discussions on installing
Antivirus products on Exchange servers, both for
and against.  Are there any real reasons why I should not install this product on my servers, as my managers
and supervisors feel that this server should be
fully protected, both the database and
  shares.
Thank you for any replies to this.

The reg files would be real handy, maybe could be posted somewhere so we can

As far as installing...and if this isn't too late...

Pull down all the exchange services. Make real sure they aren't running.
Pull down any/all ArghSucksIT services or the NAV MSE might not install.
Seriously consider never restarting them (but that is another thread).

Install the NAV CE client onto the box. Immediately if not sooner go in and
exclude all exchange database areas to include the MTA and the dir.edb (and
I do the log file areas also). File level scanning of the exe areas is OK,
but I don't see any point to taking a chance. If the directory can have any
influence on the MSE, I exclude it.

Liveupdate it.

Install the NAV MSE. Make sure to RTFM in advance so you can see what all
the defaults are before you accept them. Especially the port that the
webbased interface is going to use and what the password is before you
forget them.

Let everything restart - or better yet, reboot the box.
Go into NAV MSE and remove the nasty crappy ridiculuous liveupdate only max
10 days a week garbage that some college graduate dreamed up.
AT or WINAT yourself this line:
at 0600 every:M,T,W,Th,F,S,Su "c:\program files\navmse\navelive.exe" /silent
and then modify that to have it hit at whatever time interval(s) you want.
I always setup for every 4 hours. Free service, eh wot? Remember that if
some brave individual then rechecks the box for liveupdate max 10/month in
the NAVMSE interface it will remove all your carefully typed AT commands.
You did make them into a text file for later scripting, yes?
Then, get the Martin Blackstone Gestapo List From H*ll and implement that.
No questions on this...it has saved my clients numerous times, the latest
being that Klek? stuff that simply got stripped due to file attachment
stripping...and don't let anyone talk you out of this.
I can send you a reg clip to make that easier if you wish. I can generate
them for 2K or NT4.

Well, so much for needing to search the archives ... Was getting ready to
ask this very same question.

As a follow-up, what about using two different subnets for the redundancy?
