RE: Double-take failover
Do you have a dedicated PDC or is it one of the Exchange Servers? On the double-take configuration are you failing one exchange server over to another or do the exchange servers failover to a dedicated target server? RE: Double-take failover
I agree with checking your WINS servers. If you have multiple WINS servers make sure both are clearing out the Source server after the failover. Todd [EMAIL PROTECTED] 02/13/02 09:26AM I had a somewhat similar problem. When the failover computer would take over, the alias would have trouble with my WINS server. If I removed the old (i.e. dead) server from WINS, and let the new (Failover) server register itself, I think it was fine (IIRC). That might not be your exact problem, but hopefully it points you toward a solution. -Jim Jim Holmgren MCSE, CCNA [EMAIL PROTECTED] Network Engineer Advertising.com We bring innovation to interactive communication. You can adjust the time delay from when the server fails to when it actually assumes the roll of the Target server. todd [EMAIL PROTECTED] 02/13/02 09:37AM We tested Double Take but never implemented it. I have installed the NSI Double-Take solution for exchange. It's a really slick package as long as you set it up properly. We have failed over the exchange services twice with very successful results. This was on an NT 4.0 SP6a and Exchange 5.5 SP3 environment. The target server is the File and Print server. You will lose a little response time while failed over but it's only temporary while you repair the original exchange server. This product works with most applications. Stop the Exchange services prior to starting the backup and backup the exchsrvr directory as a flat file. If/when your server fails you should be able to restore the entire exchsrvr directory as long as the server has the same configuration as the original, such as the exchange org, site and server name. Hey, Here's what I'm doing now and why? NT 4.0 sp6, Exchange 5.5 sp4. NO $$$ for backup software, so have been using Exmerge every day to dump out pst's to dat tape. Also been running directory export out of the exchange admin prog, so at least I have something to start a restore with. Also have been running NTBACKUP to dat, but the restore ALWAYS fails cause the dir.edb import restore on another SBS box has different SID's than the source box. MS say's create a recovery server and add it as a BDC to get a correct copy of the SAM BUT SBS can ONLY be a DC, so how can I get a copy of the SAM to the 2nd box? As of now I cant see a way around this recovery server issue and am ready to give up using NTBACKUP all together, cause as far as I can see, it cant be restored to anything. Any thoughts on a workaround for this, and using my present method of Exmerging everyday to DAT? Remember I have ZERO $$$ to work with here. Thanks much in advance.. RE: Database recovery help
Microsoft recommends an Exchange aware agent to backup a live database. Depending on what software vendor you are using you should be able to purchase an Exchange agent so you can do brick level backups and restores (brick level is to the mailbox level and down to a single e-mail). I know CA's ArcserveIT has the agent and I think all the other major players do too. If you can afford that then you should do a flat file backup but that requires you to stop the Exchange services then backup the priv, pub and dir.edb file. this only allows you to restore the entire database instead of a single mailbox or e-mail. I would hightly recommend the first option. todd [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1/10 1:07a Hi Todd, Need your help here, What is the best way to backup exchange 5.5 server according to MS. Unfortunately MS was not able to help this time. I don't think there is anything available to recover the database but I wanted to investigate it first before I gave up hope. Hopefully a miracle will happen and someone will have a utility that might help. They are running with a database from Nov. 3rd so they didn't lose everything, only the last 2 stinking months of e-mail, but that makes a big difference to management. thanks, todd [EMAIL PROTECTED] 01/09/02 05:05PM Yup...just went thru the scenerio described...my database went bad...only to realize we were backing up the wrong info...spent 3-4 hours running all the esutils with no luck...called MS support at 11:30pm (thinking there was no way they could help me with no backups)...they had my Exchange up in 20 minutes...and worked to clean out the database thru the next day (I was so so relieved..)...also taught me how to backup (correctly)...boy did I learn a lot. I was wondering if anyone has any input on a 3rd party utility that might assist us in recovering at least some of the mail? I know restoring from backups would be the ideal solution but we don't have that option, I know, I know, it's a long story but unfortunately we don't have that option at this time. Any info is greatly appreciated. thanks, Todd Wood Peterbuilt Technology List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm
RE: Event ID 125 and Event ID 193
I just went through this issue. Microsoft believes it was the virus scanning software (CA) and the non-aware backups attempting to backup the database, even though the backups were not running at the time the services stopped. We configured the virus software (non-exchange aware) not to scan the exchsrvr directories. After resolving the issue, Microsoft recommended rebuilding the server due to this issue and other issues in the past. I'm not telling you to rebuild it but prevent your non-exchange aware virus software from scanning your exchange directories. Once we did that the services didn't fail, but we did rebuild it anyway due to other issues. todd [EMAIL PROTECTED] 12/27/01 09:45AM OK, so you verified you had plenty of space on each partition/drive letter? I would keep a gig or more free, just in case. There are no other errors. It restarted but I can't resolve the issue as to why it stopped - it seems like a phantom error. One q article related it to the virus checking software api going into a null state because it was trying to do an update when an on access scan was occuring. but that wasn't happening. Basically, I'm wondering if anyone else has had this happen and some possible causes. Re: Anit-Virus Software for Exchange
I would look into Trend Micro's exchange product. I've used the demo version a couple of times and it's easy to work with. I don't know about costs but I like it better than Nortons or InoculateIT. todd [EMAIL PROTECTED] 12/20/01 11:30AM We are currently using Norton Anti-Virus for Exchange which oldly enough has been working fairly well. My boss, for cost reasons, wishes to examine Alternatives. Can you guys recommend some products? and Which products sould I try to tell him no way, if you want it to work! on? So far we have looked at F-Secure. Any other thoughts? Thanks For your comments!!!
