OT - Pix Firewalls

2001-10-31 Thread Karen Palmer

This
is off topic, but since you mentioned Pix Firewalls, thought this would be a
good place to ask. Our new network manager has ordered a Pix
Firewall. We will be dropping our managed security and doing this
ourselves. It will be a great learning experience, but none of us have
ever worked with this product, or handledsecurity, FTM. Can anyone
point me to some good learning material on how to configure and manage a Pix
Firewall?

www.cisco.com. There is no other "real"
documentation out there unfortunately. I learned it on the fly. If
you know the Cisco IOS at all, it won't be all that
difficult.

Marks
suggestion is a good one. The information is good.

If you
have not worked with IOS and/or the cmd line for a while then you really need
to take a PIX class. They are two days long but will make setup and managing go
well. PIX (IMO) seem to need a lot of love and care so having some sort of PIX
person handy will be probably be appreciated.

Also make
sure you are running the latest IOS and save images to a secure and backuped machine.

Another suggestion is to get your "Network Manager" to
spring for a training class for one of your fellow co-workers. Then that
person can come back and teach the rest of the staff.

Make sure you purchase the maintenance,
Cisco has a very good support but it is only available during the warranty
period (90 days) or if you have purchased a maintenance contract. Check out their web site for
documentation as well as information on PIX training.

Make
sure you use make this change in your PIX "IF" you're running Exchange 5.x or
greater.

It
looks like your a college.. so I suspect you're not using
Exchange.

but
here ya go just in case..

at PIX
command line:
"Conduit Permit tcp host x.x.x.x (the IP address of your Exchange server,
the public one that is) eq smtp any"

this will
correctan EMSTP issue between the PIX and
the Exchange server

Just telnet to the PIX
box... don't forget to WRITEMEM to save your changes to the
config.

Get the
Cisco Press DCN book and router sim program. The router simulation software
will show you how to use IOS with Cisco Routers/Switches/Firewalls.

These
items are on our state purchasing contract, which does provide a price
break. We will get a brief training session, but I am not sure that
"brief" will be comprehensive enough for newbies who have never touched routers
or Cisco Pix firewalls. However, it will have to serve, since there is no
money for training.

Who
are you buying these items from? Our reseller gave us a price break on
their consulting service and came in and setup our router and firewall. At
the same time they gave a brief training session. We found this to be
extremely helpful. Maybe your reseller could do the same for
you.

I was
not part of the decision-making process. We are standardizing on Cisco
equipment, so that probably played a part in the decision. As to why we
are moving from a managed BSD/Gauntlet firewall, I believe that our network
manager wants to save money.
